THE LAST HOWL

Everyone in the village knows the wolves disappeared years ago.

So when their howls return on the night seventeen-year-old [protagonist's name] dreams of her dead loved one, she knows something is terribly wrong.

Drawn into the f*******n forest, she discovers a forgotten curse tied to the grief of the living—and a terrifying truth about the person she lost. The wolves are not hunting her. They are leading her toward something buried beneath the forest, something that has been waiting for her.

Now, with the darkness spreading and the people she loves in danger, she must confront the grief she has spent years running from.

Because the curse cannot be broken by forgetting.

And the final howl may be hers.

The Last Howl is a dark, emotional fantasy about grief, love, friendship, and the courage to face the things that haunt us.

CHAPTER 1: "THE STONE CHOOSES"
The Blood Moon didn’t rise. It tore itself open. For three hundred years the valley had watched it. Every hundred years, the sky split and bled red from ridge to ridge. The elders called it a cycle. The young called it a curse. The wolves just called it _The Night_. And every time it bled, the stone sang. The Stone of Choosing sat in the center of the village. Not tall. Not grand. Just black rock with red veins running through it like scars. Blood that never washed away. Tonight the veins were glowing. Two hundred wolves stood in silence. Pups who didn’t understand. Elders who had seen it twice before. The only sound was wind through dead trees and the low hum from the stone. Daren stood at the back. He was 24 and already looked older. Scarred hands. Eyes that hadn’t slept right in ten years. He wasn’t the strongest. That was Korr. He wasn’t the fastest. That was Lyra. He was the broken one. The son of the wolf who failed. "Let it be anyone," he thought. "Anyone but me." Elder Mara stepped forward. Ninety years old, staff made of Peak stone, eyes tired instead of kind. "The rules are carved," she said, voice carrying. "As they have always been carved." She pointed to the cliff behind the village. Even in the dark the words burned red: _ONE WOLF RUNS. TEN MILES. TO THE PEAK. BEFORE THE MOON BLEEDS OUT._ _IF HE SUCCEEDS, THE PACK LIVES ANOTHER CENTURY._ _IF HE FAILS, THE MOON BEGINS COLLECTING._ No one had ever succeeded. "The Moon does not want blood," Mara said. "It wants a choice. And a price." She turned to the stone. The hum shook the ground. "Stone," she said. "Choose." The red veins flared. A line of blood crawled up the surface, slow, like it was tasting names. It stopped. Pooled. Formed letters. D-A-R-E-N The pack gasped. Mara looked at him. "Daren, son of Varric. The stone has chosen you." Korr stepped forward. "Elder, he’s not ready—" "The stone doesn’t care about strong or fast," Mara cut him off. "It cares about what’s inside." She pressed her staff to Daren’s chest. "Do you refuse?" Daren met her eyes. Ten years ago he had begged and watched. He wouldn’t watch again. "No." Mara nodded. "Then it is done. The Last Howl begins at moonrise. Reach the Peak before the moon bleeds out." Daren walked to the treeline. That was where it started. Ten miles of hell between him and the Moon Wolf. Behind him, the pack whispered. Pity. Fear. Hope he didn’t deserve. He thought of his mother’s laugh. His sister’s hand in his. His father underwater, mouthing _run_. "For them," he whispered. The Elder raised her staff. "By blood and stone. Run!" And Daren ran. The forest swallowed him whole. The Forest of Echoes. The dead lived here. They called your name. "Daren?" His mother. "Please stop." His sister. "I’m sorry, son." His father. He had heard them every night for ten years. He didn’t answer. He didn’t look. He just ran until the voices went hoarse and gave up. Then came the river. But it wasn’t water. It was knives. Millions of blades moving in a current, silver in the red moonlight. The others had died here. Tried to swim and were opened. Tried to jump and were caught. Daren stepped in. The first cut opened his ankle. The second his calf. He didn’t swim. He ran _through_ it, letting the blades cut him, using pain like armor. He slipped once. Went under. Thought of his father beneath this same water ten years ago. He kicked, broke the surface, and ran again. He collapsed on the other side, bleeding, but alive. The last trial was the worst. The Cliff of Regret. It wasn’t tall. But every step forced you to relive the moment you failed the people you loved. Step one: his mother’s hand slipping from his. Step ten: his sister’s last breath in his arms. Step fifty: the village staring at him after, whispering _Varric’s son. The one whose father was too slow._ The cliff wanted him to sit and drown. The last chosen had. Daren screamed and climbed. Bleeding. Crying. Not from pain, from memory. At the top he saw them one last time — his mother smiling, his sister laughing, his father saying _I’m proud of you._ Then he pulled himself over. The Peak was waiting. The moon was almost fully bled out now. Minutes left. And there it sat. The Moon Wolf. Bigger than any wolf. Silver fur that ate light. Eyes like empty craters. It didn’t move. Didn’t snarl. Just watched. Far below, the pack was a scattering of dots. Daren was broken. Cut. Shaking. But he was here. He didn’t beg. He attacked. Teeth and claws and ten years of rage. The Moon Wolf didn’t fight back. It just took it. Then it spoke in his head. _You think this is about speed?_ _The run was never about legs. It was about what you become._ _To end the cycle, you must become the cycle. Sit. Take my place for a hundred years. While they live and forget you. Or walk away, and let me collect._ The last second ticked. Daren looked down at the pack. He thought of his sister: _Don’t let them forget me._ They would forget him too. But they would live. He howled. And sat. His fur turned silver. His eyes went hollow. His bones fused to the stone. Pain, then nothing. The Blood Moon receded. The red faded. The valley was safe. For another century. Below, the pack howled in relief. They did not say his name. On the Peak, Daren opened his new silver eyes. The Moon Wolf was gone. He was alone. The wind was cold. The night was quiet. And Daren howled. Not in victory. Not in defeat. In obsession. Because he had run for revenge. And he would pay with eternity.
