My Husband Doesn't Know I Can See Again
I murmured "Harry!" with a wide smile. I heard the roar of a car engine entering the yard. I was sure it was his car. I quickly rushed down from my upstairs room. "Ma'am, be careful, don't run!" Auntie Yara, the housemaid who has worked with my family for a long time, sounded worried, but I didn't listen. I was too happy and kept running eagerly to welcome my beloved's arrival. Harry, the husband who faithfully stood by me through joy and sorrow. Especially when I was devastated by losing my sight, he remained faithfully by my side. I couldn't wait to surprise him. He surely wouldn't expect that I could see again. But before I reached the front door, I stopped in my tracks, my smile vanished instantly when my eyes clearly saw through the glass window that Harry got out of the car with Lyka—his secretary and also my close friend. It wasn't unusual because they often came to this house together. What was odd was why they were holding hands. And affectionately at that. My heart started racing; my chest was pounding. What is this? It's not him who's surprised, but me. Have they been this close all this time? I immediately turned around and sat on the guest chair with my mind in turmoil. I touched my chest. The sound of its beating was still irregular. 'Impossible. Maybe I just misunderstood.' I’m trying to think positively. But it was difficult, seeing their happy smiles, my heart refused. The front door sounded open. Their laughter was still audible from where I sat. I counted in my heart. 'One... two... three.' "Delia? Why a-are you here?" Harry stammered, asking. He seemed surprised to see me sitting alone in the living room. Reflexively, he released Lyka's hand. Then walked closer. My calculation was correct. While I was blind, my hearing became more sensitive. I could measure distance and the sound of footsteps. I could count how many steps from the front door to where I sat. Moments like this turned out to be very useful. Meanwhile, Auntie Yara was already standing in front of me with a gaze that was mysterious, as if she was thinking or hiding something. She seemed to shake her head with a fearful face directed at Harry. Why? I couldn't look directly because I was afraid Harry would be suspicious. "I'm bored. I’m always in the room," I replied flatly. Harry sat beside me. He seemed to be observing. Has he discovered my act? "It's okay, dear, you can walk around this house. You're free to go anywhere. You can also go to the back garden, so you don't get bored. You like to see the flowers you planted, right?" he said while softly caressing my long hair. Meanwhile, his other hand signaled Lyka to sit across from my chair. I forced a wry smile. "How can I see those flowers, did you forget that I?" "I—I'm sorry, dear. I didn't mean to, ah... ahm, sorry," he regretted, immediately cutting off my words. He seemed to feel guilty. "Forget it, who did you come here with? I heard a woman's voice earlier, was it Lyka?" I managed a faint smile forward, pretending not to know. "E... ehm, yes, dear, I’m with Lyka. Look, she's sitting in front of you." I nodded with a straight gaze forward, as if greeting her. Yes, in front of me she sat quietly or perhaps secretly, so I wouldn't know she was here. My husband's secretary. I was the one who recommended her to Harry because at that time Lyka really needed a job. I simply asked Harry to take her on, regardless of the position, as long as she worked. From here, I can see her smirking at me with a sneer. Sitting smugly with one leg crossed over the other. Deliberately showing off her smooth thighs. For what purpose? To catch Harry's eye? Ha! Her skirt is way too short. As far as I remember, she never dressed like this before. "Auntie Yara, you can go. I'll take care of Delia," ordered Harry. "No!" I shouted. They were startled by my sudden outburst. "I mean, I'd like Auntie Yara to stay here. I feel at ease when she's beside me. She can quickly help me if I need anything." "Well, I'm here. It's usually just us. Auntie Yara, you can go," he said again. "But, Sir, Ma'am," Auntie Yara hesitated. "Auntie Yara," Harry called firmly. "I—yes, I'm going." Auntie Yara left, looking a bit fearful. I stayed silent, letting it be. Maybe it's for the best. If I insisted, he might get suspicious of my recent behavior. "Ehm... how have you been, Lyka? It's been nearly a month since I last saw you. You usually visit me often," I asked her casually, trying to change the subject. "Hm, good. I've been busy. There's a lot of work at the office. Right?" She took off her stilettos and walked slowly towards me. No, but she turned to the side towards Harry. Then sat close to him. So close that Lyka's body was touching Harry's. I forced myself to glance at her from the corner of my eye. It was a bit difficult, as it appeared blurry, but I could confirm her hand was playfully draped over Harry's shoulder. I was stunned by what I saw, wanting to gape but held back. My heart started racing again. I clenched my hands behind my back. 'Stay calm, Delia, stay calm. Don't get emotional. Pretend you don't see it. Hold on’. ‘So they've been seeing each other behind my back all this time? Or have they been cheating for a long time? How heartless.’ "Lyka, where are you? Why does your voice sound like it's beside me?" I deliberately asked to bait her. I heard a faint whisper, and from the corner of my eye, I caught Harry's hand motioning Lyka to return to her seat. "I'm still here, in front of you, why?" she replied curtly. Angry. She had moved back to her place. The same, walking as slowly as possible. Trying to fool me, but I could see her. Was she like this when I was blind? Pretending not to be seen. "Why are you here? Visiting me or is there work with Harry?" My tone was curt, hard to act normal after her true colors were revealed. "Yes, we have work together. It has to be finished tonight." Her face turned cheerful again, she smiled mischievously while winking at me, precisely at Harry. "Yes, dear. We're working late tonight, is it okay if you sleep alone tonight? Ehm... I mean, sleep first. I'll join you later when my work is done, you won't be mad, right?" Harry responded while stroking my hand that was on his lap. "It's okay, I understand. Don't overwork yourselves, or you'll get sick. It wouldn't be funny if you both got sick at the same time," I chuckled, forcing a laugh to ease the pain of their betrayal. They laughed along with my joke. "Yes, dear, we won't," he replied, still with a smile on his face. "Harry, could you take me upstairs?" I asked, holding his hand tightly. I didn't feel like sitting here any longer. "Oh, yes, dear, let's go! Here, let me guide you." "Lyka, sorry to leave you. Please, make yourself at home," I said reluctantly, bidding her farewell. "Of course, I already consider it my second home." Her response made me stop in my tracks. Second home? Sorry, Lyka, I won't let that happen. That's just in your imagination. "Why did you stop, Del?" "It's nothing Let's go!" I urged again. I walked, pretending I couldn't see. I kept my eyes focused straight ahead, not glancing left or right. I let Harry guide me slowly, as if I were blind, until we reached the room upstairs. After he helped me sit on the edge of the bed, Harry left. He mentioned that if I needed anything, I could call him or Auntie Yara. I nodded in agreement. I sat down, reflecting on all of this. My eyes burned as I recalled the recent events. Now I've just found out that Lyka has been stabbing me in the back. It turns out they've been cheating on me all this time. When? Was it long ago? Or just recently when I lost my sight? Alright, Lyka. I'll play your game. Let's see who wins and can keep up the pretense longer—me or you?
