The Spies

I was pleased to see Auntie Yara enter my room. She brought breakfast as usual. "Oh, Ma'am, what are you doing? You should just sit. If you want to go anywhere, just let me know, and I'll help," she said, forcing me to sit back in the chair in front of the dressing table. She also put the sunglasses on me that were on the table. Her behavior was really strange. "Auntie Yara…" "Here, eat first. Sit properly, so I can feed you," she said again, feeding me while giving a wink. Then, as if giving a signal through her gaze, she directed it toward the young woman who was busy tidying up the bed. Yes, every day two additional workers come to help Auntie Yara clean this house. They don't stay overnight, just work until their tasks are done. "Oh yes, please," I couldn't continue my words to the woman because Auntie Yara quickly fed me. "Well, good. Open your mouth wide," she said, making me annoyed. This was the first time Auntie Yara had treated me so boldly. I know she's been with my family for ages, ever since I was a child, but it shouldn't be like this. I wanted to take off the sunglasses perched on the bridge of my nose, but Auntie Yara stopped me. I was starting to get angry. I ignored Auntie Yara, with a sullen face, refusing to accept any more food from her. "If you don't eat, how will you get well quickly? Eating is good, you know, for healing the eyes. So soon your eyes can see, here, I've made sure you have plenty of carrots." Auntie Yara's words made my forehead wrinkle. Since when can eating heal eyes? Strange, but what does Auntie Yara mean by saying that? Aren't I already able to see? I saw Auntie Yara's eyes as if they were speaking to me. She kept pointing towards the woman who was cleaning the room. Could it be… "Ehm… Auntie Yara. Has the lady here finished cleaning my room?" "Dina, are you done yet?" Auntie Yara asked the woman. I didn't see her because my focus was on Auntie Yara. It seems I started to understand what Auntie Yara's strange behavior meant now. "Just a little more," the woman replied. "Come here! What's your name?" I commanded, curious. "My name is Dina, Ma'am." She walked towards me. "Ma'am, you're like that, never asking who the workers are. Dina here has been working here for five months. She was brought in by Mr. Harry. That's with Sari, coincidentally she's tidying up downstairs," Auntie Yara explained to me about the two people. I nodded, because I just found out who works in this house. I really didn't know, because the three people who used to work here all quit at the same time. Except for Auntie Yara. According to Harry, the reason was that they were bored and found better jobs compared to here. Even though their salary was quite large. I also often helped their families. But it seems that it didn't affect them to stay working here. "Call your friend, tell her to come here. I want to get acquainted," I said firmly. Dina looked surprised, but quickly nodded and immediately left my room. After she left, I gently tapped Auntie Yara's thigh. "What's going on, Auntie Yara?” I whispered, asking. “They are spies sent by Mr. Harry,” she replied in a low voice. I was shocked to hear that. Spies? What does Auntie Yara mean? “I don't understand, explain!" I whispered again. "I can't move freely here as long as they're around. Only after noon or evening can I breathe easily. Unfortunately, Mr. Harry comes too soon." I became even more confused. Has my husband really been spying on me all this time? Why? I heard the sound of two pairs of footsteps entering my room. Dina and her friend named Sari had arrived. They were now standing in front of me. I looked at them from behind the glasses I was wearing. "My name is Delia; I haven't met you before. So please introduce yourselves," I instructed them. They exchanged glances, then nudged each other. It seemed like neither of them dared to start first. "You first!" I pointed to the fuller-figured woman. "My name is Sari, Ma'am." "I'm Dina, Ma'am," Dina replied, echoing Sari's words. "Do you like working here? What's your salary?" Again, they exchanged glances. "Ehm... anyone can answer." I was starting to get annoyed with their behavior. "We enjoy it, Ma'am, and our salary is the same, eight hundred thousand a month," Dina answered. "Um, cleaning a house this big for only eight hundred thousand? That's low. Auntie Yara! What's your monthly salary?" "Six million, Ma'am." They both seemed surprised to hear that. "I can increase your salary here, but there's one condition," I said, baiting them. "What is it, Ma'am?" Sari asked enthusiastically. Her eyes were sparkling brightly. "First, let me ask, besides cleaning, what else are your duties here? Explain!" "Sorry, Ma'am. I don't get it," Dina replied. I squinted at her. Then I took off my glasses. "If I call my contacts," I paused while snapping my fingers. "In five minutes, I can know your identities up to your grandfathers and great-grandfathers, understand!" I explained with emphasis. "Can you see, Ma'am?" Dina asked in surprise, waving her hand in front of my face. "Dina, don't be rude to Ma'am," Auntie Yara scolded loudly. "Sorry, so you can see now, Ma'am? Sari and I just work here, that's all, nothing else." She looked nervous. "Are you sure? Don't make me angry, I can fire you and throw you in jail for daring to spy on me in this house," I threatened, glaring at them to scare them. "You know, Ma'am? Oh, sorry, Ma'am. Please don't. I still want to work. I also don't want to go to jail. I was just assigned an extra task to keep an eye on Auntie Yara and you. They said not to let Auntie Yara be alone with you in this house for too long, or talk about secrets with you," said Sari. It was clear that Sari was weaker and more afraid than Dina. "Is that true, Dina?" She nodded resignedly. "Sorry, Ma'am. Please don't fire us. It was all orders from Mrs. Lyka." "Wait, what did you say? MRS. LYKA? Since when do you call her 'madam' and me just 'ma'am'? I'm the madam in this house, not her. The one who has the right to pay your salaries is me, not her. Understand!" My anger rose upon hearing that. I stood with my hands on my hips. How dare Lyka claim to be the madam in this house? Outrageous. "Sorry, Ma'am. We didn't know. They said..." Sari nudged Dina's arm. They seemed afraid to speak. "What? Speak clearly to Mrs. Delia. Do you want to be fired now?" Auntie Yara helped me scare them. "They said, the big madam in this house is Mrs. Lyka. Because she's also Mr. Harry's wife. That's why we follow her orders." I shook my head hearing that. "Is that true, Auntie Yara? Did Lyka really say that?" "I don't know, Ma'am. But indeed, ever since you couldn't see, Mrs. Lyka has been acting like she owns this place. She acts like she's the lady of the house." "Alright, let me make it clear to all of you. I, Delia Willford, am the LEGITIMATE owner of this house. I am also Mr. Harry's LEGITIMATE wife. So, anything concerning this house is under my authority, and Lyka is nothing to my husband. Especially claiming to be his wife. One more thing. Continue to pretend to follow all her orders and keep me informed about everything, and about me not being blind anymore, keep it a secret. I'll raise your salary to two million. How does that sound? Deal?" I tried to negotiate with the two of them. Sari and Dina smiled. They nodded in agreement in unison. One problem was taken care of. There are still many other tasks I need to take care of. Afterwards, they resumed their work that I had interrupted. I also told Sari to change the bedsheet in the guest room to a new one. I felt disgusted remembering what happened there. If necessary, just get rid of that bedsheet. I don't want to keep any memories of their disgraceful activities.
