Chapter 2: The First Clash Kai’s fingers itched as he gathered the scattered sketches from the floor. His calm exterior was starting to fray under Aiden’s piercing gaze, and he could feel his patience thinning with every step the billionaire took toward him. “You know,” Aiden said, leaning against the table, arms crossed, “if you spent half the time listening as you do sulking, this project would actually be on schedule.” Kai’s jaw tightened. “Sulking? I’m not sulking. I’m… observing.” “Observing?” Aiden repeated slowly, his voice carrying that sharp, teasing edge that made Kai want to snap. “Interesting choice of words for someone hiding behind a sketchbook.” Kai’s grip on the sketchbook tightened. “I work better when I’m left alone,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady. Aiden smirked, stepping closer, so close Kai could feel the faint heat radiating from him. “Unfortunately for you, I don’t believe in leaving anyone alone not on my watch.” Kai swallowed hard, his pulse quickening. There was something magnetic about Aiden’s presence, something dangerous that made Kai want to retreat and stay. He shook his head, mentally scolding himself. Focus on the work, not the… whatever this is. “You’re impossible,” Kai muttered under his breath. “And yet,” Aiden said, his smirk curling just enough to unsettle Kai, “I think you might be the only one worth dealing with.” Kai froze. The words didn’t fit the sharp, critical man standing before him. For a moment, Kai caught a flicker of something softer in Aiden’s eyes, a vulnerability carefully hidden beneath arrogance. Kai shook himself, setting the sketches down with deliberate calm. “Just… leave me to work,” he said firmly, though his heart was racing. Aiden’s eyes lingered on him a moment longer, then he leaned back slightly, smirk never leaving his face. “Oh, I won’t leave. Not that easily.” Kai exhaled quietly, trying to steady his nerves. He realized then that working with Aiden Cross was going to be far more complicated than he had anticipated. And, despite himself, part of him was already intrigued.
