Buried Alive
Caius's POV
The world ended in a thunderclap. One second I was looking at Serenye's terrified face. The next, the ceiling came down like the hand of God, tons of stone and timber and centuries-old marble crashing toward us with a roar that swallowed every other sound.
I moved on by pure instinct. Grabbed Serenye and curled my body around hers, covering her head with my arms, pressing her face into my chest. My back took the first impact, a blow so savage it knocked the air from my lungs completely. Then another. Then another.
Pain exploded through my entire body. Then silence. Not true silence. Muffled sounds filtered through from above. The distant clash of fighting, someone shouting, the groan of settling stone. But around us, immediate and suffocating, was darkness.
