Olivia’s POV
I hurried away from Damian’s building wiping the tears off my face as I walk .
I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going .
I stumbled forward.
A hand caught my arm before I could fall .
“Careful “.
“I’m fine” I said pulling myself pulling my arm away.
I wiped my face again .
“Thank you “.
I looked up.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” I muttered, pulling myself together.
His eyes stayed on my face.
“Olivia”?.
I frowned .
My eyes moved over to his face again.
“Do I know you”?.
He smiled softly .
“Apparently, you don’t remember me,We went to high school together “.
I stared at him for a moment.
“Your face looks quite familiar.”
“Remember any Kellen from high schoo?”
Then I remembered.
“Ohhhh yess Kellen!”
“Finally.”
Kellen Hayes ,the rich but quiet guy back then in high school. He barely talks.
“Oh my God!!!” I screamed forgetting about Damian for a second.
“Sorry I didn’t recognize you “.
“ I can tell.”
I wiped my cheeks again and turned to leave.
“Wait.”
I stopped.
“Are you okay ?”
“What do you mean?”.
His eyes moved over me .
I tuned away again but his next question stopped me .
“How’s your stomach feeling .”
I slowly looked back at him.
“My stomach ?”
“Yeah . Is it still hurting ?”
I stared at him
“How do you know my stomach was hurting?”
Kellen hesitated .
And suddenly, something about his face seemed familiar in a completely different way.
“Kellen….have we seen each other recently?”
He stared at me for a second before answering .
“Not exactly, I was the one who took you to the hospital “.
I froze .
“What”?
“You…” I swallowed. “You were the one who took me to the hospital?”
He nodded.
I stared at him, trying to process what he had just said.
“But I thought…”
I couldn’t finish.
I had thought Damian was the one who saved me.
That was why I had gone to him. That was why I had thanked him. That was why I had stood there begging him to care about me after losing our baby.
But it hadn’t been Damian.
“You were unconscious. I didn’t know what had happened, so I rushed you to the hospital.”
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me at the hospital?”
“You didn’t give me a chance.”
I blinked.
“What?”
He smiled faintly. “You bumped into me, apologized, and disappeared before I could say anything.”
“ I found you at the bottom of the stairs.”
I couldn’t move .
The memories came rushing back .
The staircase .
The blood.
The darkness.
“But why were you there?”
“I came to meet the property agent.”
I blinked.
“What property agent?”
“The agent handling this building. I’m thinking about buying the property.”
I looked back at the building.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
“And then you found me?” I asked.
“Yeah.”
My throat tightened.
Kellen had been the one who walked into my worst moment and refused to ignore me .
“Thank you ,” I whispered.
Kellen looked at me for a moment
“ Hop in my car I will drop you off at home .”
I felt so sick , I really wanted to reject the ride but I just want to go home … Past few days had been rough for me I just needed to rest my head .
He opened the door .
I entered .
Kellen pulled away from the curb before glancing at me.
“Which way?”
I frowned.
“Home.”
“I figured that much.” A hint of amusement touched his lips. “I meant your address.”
Heat crept into my cheeks.
“Oh.”
I gave him the address, and he typed it into the navigation system before pulling back onto the road.
The last time I’d been this close to him, we were awkward teenagers in high school.
We had never been friends.
We barely exchanged more than a few words a day.
The only reason I even remembered him was because one afternoon I had stepped in when a group of boys cornered him behind the gym. I’d yelled until a teacher came running, and the next week he’d transferred schools. That was it.
Still, everyone knew who Kellen Hayes was.
The son of one of the wealthiest families in the state.
People whispered about how his mother had been his father’s cherished mistress, expecting him to grow into someone spoilt, arrogant and entitled.
Instead, he’d become the exact opposite.
Quiet.
Respectful.
Humble.
The moment I climbed into the passenger seat, I wrapped my arms around myself, wishing I could shut the world out for just a few minutes.
My chest still ached .
Not from the bruises the doctor treated but from the betrayal they couldn’t .
I’d lost my baby .
The thought alone was enough to make my throat tighten. Every memory of Damian’s betrayal crashed into me all over again, leaving me feeling dejected.
The drive to my house was quieter than I expected.
“You‘ve gotten quiet,” Kellen said.
I looked at him “I was always quiet .”
He gave me a look. “Not when you were standing up to those guys in high school.”
I smiled faintly.“ You still remember that?”
“ I remember you telling them to leave me alone like you were going to fight all of them yourself “.
“I probably would have .”
“You were standing in front of three guys twice your size.”
“And?”
He laughed softly.
For a moment , I forgot about everything else.
I smiled and looked back out the window .
After a moment, He asked , “ What do you do now ?”
The question caught me off guard.
“Nothing interesting.”
“That’s not an answer.”
I sighed“Nothing much . I studied Communication. I’ve done customer service and some administrative work. I’m looking for something better now.”
“Looking for a job?”
I nodded.
“Good”
I frowned” why ?”
Kellen stared at me before returning his eyes to the road .
“My company is hiring .”
I murmured.”okay.”
“I’m serious.”
I turned toward him.
“What company?”
“Hayes Holdings .”
I nearly sat up straight.
“Hayes Holdings?!”
He looked amused.”You’ve heard of it.”
“Of course I’ve heard of it!”
Everyone had.
Hayes Holdings was one of those companies people talked about like it belonged in another world. Real estate, investments, luxury developments, hotels .
The kind of company whose name I had seen in business articles without ever imagining I’d come anywhere near it .
Eliana had talked about it severally.
My chest tightened at the thought of her.
She has applied there so many times I had lost count.Every rejection had somehow made her want the job even more .
And now Kellen was sitting beside me, casually telling me they were hiring.
You’re joking.”
“I’m not.”
I stared at him.
“Why would you want me to apply there?”
“Because your qualifications match what I’m looking for. You have a degree in Communication, experience in administration, and you know how to deal with people. I happen to need a personal assistant, and I think you deserve a chance.”
“You want me to apply?”
“I want you to consider it “
I shook my head .
“Kellen, people would kill for a job at Hayes Holdings!”
“That’s a little dramatic.”
“I’m serious!”
“So am I.”
I didn’t know what to say.
“I’m not sure I’m good enough.”
Kellen’s expression changed.
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Decide you’re not good enough before anyone else gets the chance to.”
I stared at him.
His words hit harder than they should have.
“Just apply, “Let them decide.”
I looked down at my hands.
“Why do you care?”.”You barely knew me.”
He was quiet for a moment.
“I knew enough “
Something about the way he looked made me look away.
Before I could respond, we reached my house.
He pulled over.
“Send me the application details” he said handling his phone to put my digits which I did .
“I will.”
I opened the door.
“Thanks,Kellen.Seriously.” At least I had a reason to smile after all the bad occurrences.
He nodded.”Get some rest .”
I stepped out and closed the door.
“Olivia.”
I turned.
His face had suddenly turned serious.
“What?”
My fingers tightened around the door.
He looked at me for a long moment.
“When I found you at the bottom of those stairs…”
He paused.
“I already knew something was wrong before I saw your face.”
I frowned.
“How?”
His jaw tightened.
“I heard you.”
“Heard what?”
