THE INHERITANCE THAT WASN’T
Chapter 1: The Inheritance That Wasn’t
Lena Hartley had never stepped foot inside a courtroom before, but today, she was the center of attention. Not because she had committed a crime, but because her grandfather, the media mogul Benedict Ashford, had passed away, leaving behind a will that was about to change her life.
She stood quietly at the back of the room, out of place in her thrift-store blouse and worn ballet flats among the polished shoes and designer handbags of the Ashford clan. Her mother had raised her far away from the glitz of the billionaire family she was born into, and Lena had spent most of her life unaware of who her grandfather truly was. It wasn’t until a lawyer tracked her down with a summons to the will reading that she even realized she was connected to one of the wealthiest families in New York.
“…And to my beloved granddaughter, Lena Hartley,” the lawyer read, pausing as gasps and murmurs echoed through the room. “I leave a sealed letter and full access to the Ashford Trust, pending verification of her identity and a clause she must complete.”
Lena blinked, stunned. Granddaughter?
She hadn’t even met the man. Her mother, who died years earlier, had never spoken of him beyond saying, “He made his choice. We made ours.”
“Who the hell is that?” barked a woman seated near the front—blond, elegant, and fuming.
Lena swallowed hard, raising a hand awkwardly. “I’m Lena,” she said softly.
The lawyer nodded solemnly. “Mr. Ashford left very specific instructions. Lena is indeed his granddaughter. DNA tests have already confirmed her identity.”
The room erupted into chaos. Family members yelled, argued, and accused. Lena stood frozen, heart pounding.
The letter was handed to her with a heavy wax seal and trembling fingers. She stepped outside the conference room and opened it slowly.
"My dearest Lena,
If you are reading this, then you are standing at the beginning of a journey I failed to take in my lifetime. I turned my back on your mother because of pride. But you deserve everything I denied her. Before you can claim the inheritance, you must spend one year living as an Ashford. That means stepping into the world you were born into but never knew.
There will be resistance. There will be pain. But there is also truth waiting to be uncovered—truth that may change everything you think you know about your family… and yourself."
Lena folded the letter, eyes stinging with unshed tears. She had no idea what awaited her, but she knew one thing: she wasn’t going back to her old life.
Not now.
Not ever.
