Chapter 51As I drive I feel sick and dazed because I'm so shocked by what's unfolding. I'm desperately trying to keep Raymond talking and I've almost reached the main street of Le Perthus when the line goes silent. I've driven at breakneck speed, but fortunately the winding road up the mountain to the frontier town is quiet, because of the time of year and the time of day. The main street is more Spanish-looking than French and the border between the two countries is just at the end of this road. Le Perthus is full of glitzy shops selling designer wear, cheap cigarettes and alcohol, but these shops are all closed because it's lunchtime.
