Thirteen The morning couldn’t have come sooner. The frozen ground and ice dew hadn’t done me any favours. The coldness had dug so deep into my body, I was convinced my bones were ready to shatter. I’d never been this cold in my life and I couldn’t imagine ever feeling warm again. The captors hadn’t tended to the fire properly and the soft flickers weren’t nearly hot enough to warm us all the way in our ditch. Curling up in a big ball of bodies had helped us distribute some of our body heat, but by morning, we were all shivering and shaking. “E-Everyone o-okay?” “Been better,” Regan grumbled. “I’m freezing.” Darren dug his cold hands into my back and I shrieked.
