Widowhood
CHAPTER 1
Alison stood in front of her husband's lifeless body, Andrew, and she said aloud.
“Darling you can't die, who will take care of me and your children”. She said aloud this time around with tears streaming down her cheeks. Her eyes were already red due to the tragic event she was passing through.
Alison cried bitterly but no amount of treats could bring the dead back to life.
“Alison, my dear, you have to move on with your children,” Alison's mom said to her as her eyes dropped and her gaze fell to the floor as if the weight of her sorrow was too heavy to bear.
But Mom, how do I start? How do I take care of my children?
Who will I run to for help? Alison said to her mom as tears trembled at the corners of her eyes, threatening to spill over like a summer storm.
Alison heard the voice of her late husband, her husband's voice was a whisper but they carried the weight of a thousand words of encouragement saying “You are strong, capable, and amazing”.
She stood up immediately encouraged with her shoulders squaring, as newfound determination coursed her vein.
“I have to put in more work this time around”, Alison said to herself. She worked tirelessly to meet the needs of her children but still felt the loneliness her late husband left in her heart.
She resumed her Job as the receptionist at BROWNS COMPANY LTD and worked extra hours just to meet the needs of her family, especially her children's tuition fees( Zara, Gabriel, and Ariel)
Alison's phone rang in her workplace, shrill in the silence of her morning routine, she answered, expecting a telemarketer or a wrong number. But instead, a cheerful voice spoke on the other end.
“Good day madam, This is BRAIN ACADEMY calling on behalf of your child Ariel's.
Allison's heart skipped a bit. Yes, what's going on?
‘ I'm the receptionist from her school, I'm afraid Ariel slumped over in class a minute ago, we are trying to reach her emergency contact’.
Alison's mind raced as she grasped the implication. Is she okay? What happened? Alison said.
‘Her teacher said she just suddenly leaned forward and didn't respond, we are trying to get her attention now.
Alison's grip on the phone tightened. I'll be right there. She said,
She ran to her HR to explain the situation and took permission that she would be off the rest of the day due to her daughter's condition.
‘ it's okay madam, God will heal your daughter’, the HR said to her with a smile on his face.
She left her workplace and drove straight to her children's school speedily. She arrived at her children's school picked up her children dropped Zara and Gabriel at home with the nanny and drove straight to the hospital with Ariel.
She arrived at St. Mary's hospital, where Ariel was taken by the nurses and a series of tests was run, to know what the issue was while she stood outside the door.
‘Doctor, what is the issue with my daughter?’ Alison said to Doctor James as tears wanted to forcefully come out of her eyes but she forcefully held it back.
‘Madam pls can I see you in my office’ the Doctor said to her
Alison quickly rushed to the doctor's office, she was eager to know what made Ariel slump.
‘Madam am so sorry to inform you after the series of tests were conducted, the results indicated that Ariel has suffered heart failure’
These words hung in the air like a heavy fog suffocating Alison's hope. She felt her world spinning, her mind reeling with implications.
‘What …, what does that mean’? She stammered, her voice barely audible.
‘it means her heart is no longer pumping effectively’ the doctor explained gently, She needs a heart transplant.
‘A heart transplant ‘? Alison asked. This time around she said with tears rolling down her cheeks.
She wiped her eyes off and continued her conversation with the doctor.
‘Time is the essence madam’ The Doctor replied gravely. We need to get her on the transplant list as soon as possible. Every minute counts.
Madam, I'm sorry but this will cost you $10,000 for her transplant, the Doctor said.
Tears rushed like a torrent from her eyes, Overflowing like a dam that had burst.
‘Madam is not time to cry, get the money so we can commence the transplant immediately’.
Allison's precious Ariel needed a new heart to survive. Alison hasn't been paid a salary and even if she is paid it is not up to the amount the Doctor is calling.
"Alison's eyes widened in horror. 'Where do I get such money?' she stammered, her mind racing with desperation. 'I haven't been paid my salary yet...and even then, it's nowhere near enough!'
"The doctor's expression turned grim. 'I'm afraid time is running out, Mrs. Alison. We need the payment within the next 7days,
or...'
"He paused, leaving the unsaid threat hanging in the air like a sword of Damocles. Alison's heart raced with panic as she stared at the doctor, her mind reeling with the impossible task ahead."
“Or what Doctor?, Talk to me, Doctor”.
