Chapter One: Forbidden Promises
The forest was alive under the full moon, casting shadows over every branch and leaf, yet none of it mattered to Serena as she approached the hidden glade. Her heart raced, pounding in her chest, for she knew he would be there—just as he always was.
And there he was, standing tall against the backdrop of the silver light, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her shiver. Lucian. The alpha of the neighboring pack. Her forbidden love, the one who understood her like no one else.
“You came,” he said, his voice a deep rumble that seemed to resonate with the earth itself.
“Of course,” Serena replied, breathless. The tension between them was electric, almost unbearable. She took a step closer, her gaze never leaving his. “I couldn’t stay away.”
Lucian’s expression softened as he reached out, tracing his fingers gently down her cheek. His touch was fire, igniting a thousand feelings inside her, each more dangerous than the last. “You know how I feel about you, Serena,” he whispered, his tone almost a plea. “But this—us—it’s not that simple.”
A flicker of doubt crossed her mind, but she silenced it, determined to cherish this moment. She stepped closer, pressing her forehead to his, her heart beating in sync with his. “Nothing is ever simple, Lucian. But we… we can make this work.”
For a heartbeat, she thought she saw hope in his eyes. And then, in a swift, unexpected movement, he stepped back, his gaze hardening.
“Serena, we can’t keep doing this,” he said, the words striking her like a blow. “I have responsibilities… loyalties that go beyond what you and I feel.”
The sting of rejection hit her like icy rain, but Serena refused to back down. “So, what are you saying?” she demanded, her voice cracking as she fought the wave of hurt crashing over her.
Lucian looked away, his jaw tense. “I’m saying this has to end.”
Just then, a rustling from the shadows alerted them both. Lucian’s eyes darted toward the noise, his expression darkening. “They’re here,” he muttered. “If they find you with me… Serena, they’ll—”
But before he could finish, three figures emerged from the darkness, their eyes gleaming with hostility as they took in the scene.
“Lucian,” one of them sneered, “so this is where you’ve been disappearing. I should’ve known it was because of her.”
Serena’s breath hitched. The gleam in their eyes was anything but friendly; it was cold, predatory, and filled with disdain. She took a step back, but Lucian’s hand caught hers, his grip like iron.
“Leave her out of this,” he growled, his tone protective but dangerous.
One of the men chuckled darkly. “Oh, we’re just getting started.”
Serena's gaze locked on Lucian’s, a look of desperation and betrayal flashing in his eyes as he whispered, “Run. Don’t look back.”
