Keira's Pov "The Hawthorne family is set to marry their first daughter off to the Penelope family, to save their company and the underlying health of their grandfather. Speculations had It that the Heir of Penelope is still in coma but the marriage preparations has kicked off which leaves the city of Boston in awe, Why are the Hawthornes desperate to marry their first daughter off to a man in Coma who might die Anytime soon?" "Stupid Presenter!" Mother barked and switched off the television at once, dropping the remote harshly on the table making everyone flinch. "I don't care how you're going to this Hawthorne but my daughter is not getting married to that Disable Psycho who would soon give up anytime soon!" She spat out in fury, staring at my dad who pressed his knuckles together nervously and stared off space. "The deed has been done Lucia or we will go bankrupt! You know the Penelope family is extremely dangerous and messing with them isn't the issue. Aside from the hassle of this marriage, we'll be getting the sum of 500 thousand dollars as a compensation." My dad tried to convince her but it was useless, she was hyperventilating. My sister has been in tears since the announcement of her marriage kicked off and I felt pity for her, not because I cared but because I couldn't imagine tying my future to a Man in Coma. If I wasn't going to school in L.A at the moment, I knew my mother wouldn't hesitate to let me take my sister's place, letting me clean her mess as usual as if I wasn't part of the family. As if I wasn't also a human with feelings. So seeing her in this state, angry and confused in pain gave me a hidden happiness I shouldn't have. I know, I should feel guilty, caring and pitiful but that's the least of my emotions. I feel relieved. Tessa would leave the house for her husband and there would be a sense of profaned sanity in the house. Just maybe, it would make my father focused on my demands by paying grandfather bills who was struggling for his life. " And how is that my business Hawthorne ? I've never seen her so angry till now, her voice could cause a newborn to regret coming to the world. Despite her pretty looks, she forced herself to be ugly by widening her eyes and tugging her hair in the process to prove a point, just for her beloved daughter. "That's enough Lucia, this is not up for an argument, fix your daughter to get prepared for tomorrow's wedding. Everything is so ready so there's nothing to worry about. This is about the legacy of this family and she would do the honour of saving it." My father stood up, clearly done with a tone of defiance and my sister stood up as well, flipping her hair backwards in anger. "I will never get married to a crippled Man in Coma dad! Don't you have any shame that you will let your first blood do such a despicable act when my sister is there to cover this mess up. You know I reek of high class and the people I'm going to get involved with will increase your status. " She continued, not sparing me a glance and I gasped at her words and stood up, sudden dread and goose bumps fill my skin as I stood up to shake my head. "Don't listen to her dad, I just started college!! I need time to finish my degree whereas she is already done since last year!" I yelled but my mother was quick to slap me hard and hot stings of pain blurred my vision. "Keep your insulting dirty little mouth shut when your elder sister Is talking!" I swallowed a lump and felt hot tears circulate my eyes. "Dad, all I'm saying is that I would have done it if I wasn't so occupied and expensive. You need to improve the company's legacy and financial status and I can do that for you. Keira won't do s**t, and she can always complete her degree after marriage. Besides, she needs the money for her grandfather's bills, so why would you let me go and marry such a disgusting fellow?" She asked my father and glared at me and when the silence was beginning to sink in, I had to Intervene. "He's also your grandfather Tessa, why do you want me to take up your mess again? I'm your sister too and I have my life to live!" My voice was surprisingly calm even though what I expected was to yell out my frustrations and anger. "I have no business with your grandfather, ask father s**t and don't try to play the pity party. You're useless in this family and this is the time to prove your worth." She fired at me and mother nodded in approval. I don't understand what's going on aside from the marriage thingy that's about to burst my brain... why was she referring grandfather's predicament as It was my responsibility alone. "Your sister is right Keira, you should be useful in the family as she's a very important asset to me in this family." I scoffed at my father's cold words as I felt a heavy weight of pain chugging down the bile of my throat. "And what am I to you? A liability to fill up their mess all the damn time?" I yelled in pain. "I delayed going to college because of her, I got Into so many mess because of her, I went to a damn freaking cell because of her and I'm going to marry a disabled Man because of her too? Are you even my father?" I cried out and he slapped me hard. "Don't talk to me like that, you should be grateful I didn't throw you out after killing your mother. They accepted you as theirs and you're this ungrateful?" My father's words sent me spiralling on the couch In shock. I couldn't believe my ears right now. Killing my own mother? "What are you talking about?" I asked him and my mother or whoever she is right now, answered in his stead. "I've done nothing but love and accepted you." Liar! "Even after your mum died as a result of your existence, we accepted you and you can't do this for your family?" I fisted my hands and grip the couch so hard in pain that I was scared my heart could rip out. Her voice was filled with a snake Venom, so warm with caressing touch until it stings with a bite and send one to death. That has been my predicament with this woman who happens to be my mother. "So I've been living a lie for the past twenty three years of my life?" I asked, directing the question to no one and my father sighed. "Keira, don't misunderstand my actions, you're still my–" I raised my hands up to stop him, not giving a f**k about how he saw it. "I'll marry him, for the sake of grandfather and the sake of getting the f**k out of this rotten family!" I blasted out, not able to keep my anger in check and stood up. "Tell them I will take Tessa's place!" I retorted again and walked out of their sites, wondering how my life would be in the Penelope's family.
