No way! there couldnt be such a twist, could it?
No! there had to be some kind of mistake. It was just a joke right? Yeah, of course it was just a joke... I mean you cant possibly get married without some sort of misunderstanding, right? It's impossible to marry your professor? It's illegal, isn't it?
I've been here for a few days, and I already have to get married.
Kate had her head exploding with all her thoughts.
"I absolutely must call Professor Zhang! "she says taking her phone. She looks at the time and sees that she has about three minutes before he gets out of class.
She dials his number and presses the phone against her ear as she waits for him to pick up. She hears him say hello, but doesn't bother to answer since she's so agitated.
"Explain to me why I go home, and I find that I have to marry you!?" she asks in one breath. He laughs.
"It's a surprise!" He says excitedly. She groans and rolls her eyes.
"You do know how I feel about surprises, right?" She says crossing her arms.
"Well yeah, but its not like we're gonna actually get married" he says. She takes a deep breathe.
"Okay then, explain what's going on." She says calmly. He tells her everything that happened that day.
"At the hospital, after I saved you, your best friend parents came, they pressured me on marrying you, because I saved you! I didn't want to do, but they told me that they promised to your mom to help you get married. So here we are."
Kate couldn't believe it.
" So we are gonna have a contract marriage? Is that right? "she asks him.
" We need to talk about it face to face, see you tomorrow at university."Professor hangs up.
Kate lets out a frustrated scream and drops her phone on her bed.
She lays down in her room and falls asleep thinking about her life choices.
---
The next day Kate is pacing around outside the office of Professor Zhang.
How did she even get into this mess?! She knew about arranged marriages, but never actually thought that she'd have to get married! Well, yes, the idea of being married sounded very appealing.
She k on the office door.
Professor Zhang opens it looking very professional wearing his glasses.
"Oh, good morning Kate. Come in please".
He closes the door behind her as they make their way towards each other.
Kate takes a seat across from his desk.
Professor Zhang pulls a notebook out of his drawer and hands it over to Kate.
There were lots of papers inside of it, all about her. "how did you get this information?!" Kate said getting up and taking the papers in her hand.
"Just a small research on who I'm going to marry. But this is not important," he says taking another piece of paper out. "Now, let me see..."he starts talking to himself as he reads over the paperwork.
"We'll discuss the whole process once you sign the form, okay?" He says as he puts the papers back in the folder.
Kate nods.
"This will only take a few minutes, then we can discuss your wedding." he smiles at her.
"I know, Professor Zhang!" Kate says annoyed. "But how the heck am I supposed to understand half of this?"
He chuckles and shakes his head. "You don't need to read it all at once, you'll learn more with time."
"So what happens now?" she says sitting down.
"et's talk about it when we get our marriage certificate. In the meantime, if you need anything please feel free to contact me." Professor Zhang says standing up.
Kate nods. "Thanks Professor." She walks around him to leave. She pauses by the door and turns to look at him once more.
"Hey, do you mind telling me exactly how long this will last? " Kate asks as she points to the papers still clutched in her hand.
He nods. "Of course."
"Maybe... Six months?" He says uncertainly.
Kate nods and walks out the door.
She sighs and starts walking to her university lessons , she feels really anxious about this whole thing. All this planning stuff makes her feel dizzy. And to top it all off, she has no idea what type of person this is, or how much it'll hurt her.

Once class is over Kate goes straight to her apartment. She takes out her phone and tries Professor Zhang's contact info, but it seems that the connection has been cut off. She decides to put it on silent for the rest of the day.
That night she wakes up at 3 o'clock in the morning to her alarm. She grabs her phone and checks the screen to see if anyone answered her message. No one did. That means she can use it for two reasons, one was the fact that no one answered her message; the second reason was that no one was home.

The next morning she heads towards the bus station and waits until it arrives. It feels like ages before she finally manages to board. She sits alone in one of the back seats, watching people walk on either side of her. People in dresses and heels. Men with sunglasses and women with their hair in buns. Her own clothes fit her quite nicely, she doesn't mind having a loose fitting shirt, jeans and sneakers.
She gets to the university, and walks through the gates to the student parking lot. She stops by the entrance of the building where she has her classes and walks through the building, she notices that there aren't many students left and the hallways feel empty.
After getting her schedule she heads to the library. The librarian looks surprised when she sees her. "Good Morning miss Kate! How can I help you?"
"Morning," she says smiling, "do you have any textbooks I could borrow? Or maybe some other materials I can bring home?"
The woman beams, she nods and starts searching her shelf. After a while she finds a large book on botany and puts it on one of the nearby desks.
"If there's something else you need, please don't hesitate to ask." She pats Kate on the shoulder and walks away.
Finally something productive to do!
