Kate had been studying at the library for hours. Her exams were coming up, and she wanted to make sure she was fully prepared. As she exited the library, she realized it was already night-time. The streets were desolate, and a cold breeze swept through the air.
As she began to walk home, she noticed a group of men standing at the end of the street. They were unfamiliar to her, and as she drew closer, she noticed their menacing presence.
"Hey, sweetheart. What are you doing out so late?" said the first man.
Kate tried to avoid eye contact and approached on the opposite shoulder of the street, keeping her eyes fixed on the ground.
"Where do you think you're going?" said the second man, blocking her path.
"I-I just need to go home," replied Kate, her heart racing with fear.
The men began to circle her like vultures, their breaths heavy with l**t and alcohol. Kate's mind was racing, and she began to panic. She knew she had to escape but didn't know how.
"Hey, let's have some fun. What do you say, boys?" said the third man, a smirk on his face.
Kate knew it was now or never. She turned on her heel and started running, pushing past the men and sprinting down the alleyway.
She had never been more grateful for all of the exercise she had done in preparation for her exam. The men, however, were not far behind her.
"Get her!" yelled one of the men as they chased her through the narrow alley.
Kate's heart was pounding, and she could feel her throat tightening with fear. She knew she couldn't outrun them forever. She needed a plan.
As she reached a dead-end, she turned around and screamed with all her might, hoping someone nearby would hear her. But the alleyway was eerily quiet, and her screams went unanswered.
The men caught up with her, snatching her by her arms and pulling her towards them. Kate struggled to break free, but their grip was too strong.
"Please let me go. I won't tell anyone," begged Kate.
The men just laughed and taunted her, enjoying the sense of power they had over her.
Suddenly, a voice boomed from behind them. "Hey! Get away from her!"
The men turned around, their demeanor changing from confident to fearful. A tall man stood in the entrance to the alleyway, his arms crossed and his expression menacing.
"You heard me. Get away from her," he repeated, slowly advancing towards the group.
The men hesitated, but eventually, they released Kate and fled into the darkness. Kate laid there, on the cold pavement of the quiet road, unconscious. Her mind was tired, her body bruised, and her heart was shattered. All she wished for was an escape, a way out of all the fear that had been brought upon her.
The men who had been holding her hostage just moments before hesitated before taking off into the darkness. They observed the shadowy figure of a man, following them at an ungodly speed.
The men had never seen someone run like that before. It was unlike anything they had ever witnessed. They were both afraid and bewildered. They stumbled over their own feet, as the mysterious figure closed in on them at an alarming rate.
He wore a long, black coat that swayed dramatically with his steps. His eyes glowed vividly in the moonlit night, and the men could hear his breaths as he approached them.
They knew they were no match for this man. They were cowards, criminals, but not fighters. So, in a moment of panic, the men did what they did best; they took off running, not caring where they were going.
The man slowly came to a stop, satisfied that the cowards had fled. He turned around, facing the direction of the victim he had saved moments before, and discovered her lying lifelessly in the middle of the road.
The man immediately ran to her side. He knelt down, took her small hand in his large, rough one, trying to feel for a pulse. His hands trembled as he realized how fragile and delicate she was.
He knew he had to act fast, and so he lifted her up gently, carrying her in his arms with the utmost care. He could tell she had gone through hell and back, and he almost regretted not being there to stop it.
His thoughts lingered on that for a minute, a part of him questioning why he had taken the time to punish the men who had harmed her when he could have been there to prevent it in the first place.
Nonetheless, he pushed that thought aside and focused on the girl in his arms. He cradled her tightly, shielding her fragile figure from the cold, harsh wind that blew around them.
The man carried her out of the darkness and into the light where streetlights illuminated the road.
The man ignored the looks and the comments he heard from the individuals around him. He continued on, determined to get the girl to safety. He was not about to stop until he had delivered her to the people who could get her the help she needed.
He continued to carry the girl, but he focused on his goal.
As he reached his destination, a group of people flocked to him, all trying to offer their assistance.
"Is she okay?" They questioned, concern in their voices.
The man could hear the panic in their tones, the fear of the unknown that lurked inside each of them. He knew deep down that they were all genuinely concerned for her, and for that, he was grateful.
But he also knew that he couldn't stay any longer. He needed to depart, to get the girl inside the hospital, where trained professionals could take care of her.
The man gently placed the girl on the ground, and he watched as one of the bystanders called for an ambulance. He observed as they shouted out the girl's circumstances, her situation, and the incidents that brought her there.
The paramedics quickly rushed to his aid, tending to his injuries, and asking him questions that he could barely answer. They asked him what had happened and how he had come to be carrying a girl.
He couldn't help but let out a chuckle at the irony of it all.
Here he was, the man who had just saved a young girl's life, and now he was rendered incapable of helping himself.
As the paramedics finished assessing him, they loaded him into the ambulance alongside the unconscious girl, even though he wouldn't have needed it. The girl's fate now rested in the hands of the professionals, and he could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
The man reflected on the events that had brought him here. He pondered about the girl, her situation, and her future. He hoped that she would recover soon, that she would not have to suffer any more hardships or pain.
The man hoped that they would be punished for what they had done. He knew they deserved the consequences of their actions and wished that justice would prevail in the end.
In the hospital room, Kate falls out of bed after waking up startled.
The man reached out his hand to help Kate up. She took it gratefully, her hands shaking with relief.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice surprisingly gentle.
Kate nodded, her voice shaking. "Y-yes, thank you. Thank you so much."
The man assured her that she was safe now and walked her back to her bed where he helped her to get under the covers.
Kate never really saw the stranger's face, but she knew he was a guardian angel. Without him, she didn't know what could have happened to her.
