As Evangeline drove into the town limits, she could feel the tension rise. All she could think about is what the doctor would say about her illness. She didn't know what it was and she always nervous at the doctor appointments. She pulled up in front of the office and headed into the building. She approached the desk at the front. "Hello. How can we help you today?" the nurse asked. "I have an appointment with the doctor today. I called a few days ago." Evangeline said sheepishly. "Not a problem. I'll get you checked in and take you back to the room. You're our last appointment today." the nurse said as she grabbed the paperwork she had printed and escorted Evangeline to the room. Evangeline waited patiently for the doctor after the nurse checked her vital signs and wrote down some notes for the doctor. It seemed like it took the doctor hours to show up but in fact it had only been 5 minutes. "Hello Evangeline. How are you feeling today?" the doctor asked with a look of concern on his face. "I've been feeling sick the last couple of weeks and I don't know what's going on. I've been feeling nauseous and throwing up when I do vigorous work. I don't know what it could be. I didn't eat anything bad." she said with a bit of hopelessness in her voice. "Well let's do a couple of standard tests. I have a lab tech that can get us the bloodwork results in the next half hour. I'll need a urine sample first and then we can get the tech in for a blood sample." the doctor said with confidence in his voice. "Alright that sounds good." she agreed as the doctor left some supplies. The doctor returned to the room a short while later with a urine cup and the lab tech. "I'm going to take one vial of blood for the testing and then start working on it right away for you." the tech said as she proceeded to take the sample. "When she's done I'll get you to go and give me a urine sample. Leave it sealed on the sink and I'll grab it after." the doctor said as he left the room.
Evangeline waited patiently for the doctor to returned with the results. As Evangeline looked through her favorite blog app, she saw an advertisement that stopped her scrolling immediately. She thought it was just the way she had been feeling lately, but it all made her second guess herself. The advertisement was about pregnancy. Evangeline didn't think this could be the cause for everything. As she was caught up in her thoughts, the doctor walked in. "I have some results but I'm going to wait for your blood work to be done before I make any judgements." he stated. No sooner did the doctor utter his words, the lab tech walked in holding a piece of paper. "Here are the results from her blood work, Doctor." she said with a smile as she left the room. "Well, it appears I was right on my first findings. Evangeline, you are pregnant." the doctor said as he handed her the paperwork. Evangeline didn't know what to think or say. "What do we do from here?" she asked. "Well, we will have to get you set up with future appointments to monitor the pregnancy and your health. It's a simple process. We do blood work and urine samples then check your vitals and all the little things like that." the doctor said with a reassuring tone in his voice. "Alright." Evangeline responded as she got up from her chair. "I will send you an email with all the appointment date and times up to 35 weeks." the doctor informed her. Evangeline nodded as she left the doctor's office. She headed over to the local office supply store in town. She ran in and picked up a stack of 12 leather bound books. Each one had a solid spine to make labelling them easier. I'm going to keep a journal through the pregnancy so we all have something to look back on. Evangeline bought the books and a few pens then headed back to her truck. She jumped in and started her truck then headed for the ranch.
She pulled into the yard and drove over to her house. She quickly ran upstairs and put the books away in her drawer with her pens. She changed into a pair of shorts and a t-shirt then joined everyone downstairs in the back yard. "Hey honey!" Philip shouted as the boys all dunked him in the pools. Evangeline laughed and smiled. "Hey girl I got a drink for you." Amy, the housemaid said. "Hi Amy!" Evangeline said back with excitement. Evangeline met Amy a week prior when she came for her new job on the ranch. Amy was a shorter, sweet brunette girl. She had dropped out of high school with her brother Liam and came to work at the ranch. Liam had gone north to work a job in the logging industry. "I'm so glad to see you but unfortunately the doctor said I'm not allowed to drink until he figures out what's going on." Evangeline said with a slight look of disappointment on her face. "That's ok! I did make sure to grab some spicy clamato juice for you." Amy said as the two girls went into the house to the kitchen. Evangeline grabbed a large glass beer mug out of the cupboard while Amy grabbed ice and the clamato juice. The two ladies poured themselves a drink and headed back outside. "How are you feeling?" Amy asked as they sat back in the lounge chairs beside the pool. "It didn't go too bad. I can't complain." Evangeline responded. "Let's go for a dip in the pool." Amy suggested as she grabbed Evangeline's hand dragging her to the pool.
The two girls jumped into the pool and joined in on the conversation the boys were having amongst themselves. As everyone sat in the pool and conversed with each other, no one noticed John walk into the yard. He carried a few pizza boxes and a couple buckets of chicken. He decided to bring the crew some food and of course, alcoholic beverages. Evangeline heard someone behind her and looked to see John. "Hey John, can I talk to you quick?" she asked. "Of course, where should I put this stuff down?" he asked. "Just over on the table there should be fine." Evangeline responded as they headed for the table. They sat down in the chairs. "I went to the doctor today." Evangeline said. "How did it go?" John asked with the look of concern on his face. "It went good. I figured out what's wrong." she responded. "What is it?" John asked as the two looked at each other. "I'm pregnant and I don't know how to tell Philip or how he's going to react to the news. I'm not even sure I know how I feel about it and it's my body." she responded as she turned her head away. "If I know my son, he will be happy about it. I've been thinking about your guys' future together. I actually thought about everything for years now. I put away $50,000 for each one of my kids weddings." John said with a smile. "I wanna find a way to tell him but I don't know how to." Evangeline said. "How about you and Amy start planning the wedding and I'll set up a time with Philip so I can see how he feels about the idea." John suggested. Evangeline nodded and headed back towards the pool.
