It had been ten years since Shane first met Sarah in their freshman year of college. They had become fast friends, bonding over their shared love for cheesy rom-com movies and late-night study sessions. Shane had always admired Sarah's intelligence, her quick wit, and her infectious laugh. They were inseparable, always there for each other through thick and thin. "I got a job offer in another city," she said, searching his face for a reaction. "It's a great chance for my career, but it means I would have to move away." Shane felt like the ground had dropped from under him. The thought of Sarah leaving hurt. "When do you have to decide?" he asked, trying to stay calm. "I have a week to answer them," she replied softly. "I want to take it, but I don’t want to lose you." Shane's mind raced. This was the challenge he had feared. "What if we try to make it work, even if you're far away?" he suggested, hoping. "We could do long-distance. We could visit each other and call every day. I don’t want to lose you." Sarah's eyes softened, and she stepped closer. "I want that too, Shane. But long-distance is hard. It takes a lot of trust." "I know," he replied, his heart racing. "But I believe in us. He wanted to support Sarah, but the idea of her moving away made him anxious. "Do you think we can really make long-distance work?" he asked. "It sounds hard." Sarah sighed and thought for a moment. "It will be tough, but I think we can do it if we both try. We just need to talk and be honest with each other." Shane nodded, feeling a little better. "I want to be there for you, no matter what. I just don’t want to lose what we have." "I don’t want to lose it either," Sarah said softly. "You mean a lot to me. But I also need to think about my future." They reached a bench and sat down, feeling the weight of the decision. Shane took a deep breath. "What if we set some rules for long-distance? Like how often we’ll talk or visit each other?" "That sounds good," Sarah replied, her eyes brightening. "We could plan visits every month and video call every week. That way, we can stay close." "Yes! And we can share what we’re doing in our lives," Shane added, feeling more hopeful. "It could be fun to plan little surprises for each other too." Sarah smiled, and Shane felt warm inside. "I like that idea. It will keep things exciting." "But what if one of us feels lonely or unsure?" Shane asked seriously. "I don’t want either of us to feel trapped." "We have to promise to be open about our feelings," Sarah said firmly. "If something is bothering us, we need to talk about it right away." Shane agreed, feeling relieved. "Okay, I promise. I want us to be honest with each other." As they sat together, the sun finally went down, leaving a dark blue sky filled with stars. Shane took Sarah's hand and squeezed it gently. "No matter what happens, I want you to follow your dreams. I’ll always support you." Tears shone in Sarah's eyes. "Thank you, Shane. That means a lot to me. I want to make this work, and I believe we can." They sat in comfortable silence, feeling a mix of hope and uncertainty. The future was still unclear, but they knew they would face it together, no matter the distance. As they got up to leave, Shane felt determined.
