Chapter 1
/Shauna/
I took a glance at myself in the mirror while I carefully applied an additional coat of mascara and waited for it to dry. I couldn't help but grin when I heard my best friend singing along to the pop song that was playing over the speakers in the connected bedroom, where the volume of the music was turned up very high. Since I was going to be residing with Emrina for the next month in her home in San Francisco, she invited me to attend a neighborhood party in the area tonight.
We had both finished college and were finally in a position where we could have some fun, which was something that Emri was all about.
"How many people are going to this party?"
“Big. It's in one of the off-campus apartment complexes, near the main road. There will be former students as well as those who are now enrolled there. It ought to be enjoyable." Before she let me in, Emri took out her red lipstick and carefully lined her lips with it using the product.
"You have such a lovely appearance, Shauna. I love your hair cut."
"It may have been a poor decision to carry it out before I arrived at this location. I've had nothing but bad luck with the ocean. I retorted as I watched her put on a pair of black heels.
Emrina was looking really stunning. Because she was such a flirt, I had no doubt that she would strike up a conversation with a male patron and possibly even end up leaving with him. I was the one that was more reserved than most people and would often be found cowering in the back corner.
"Shauna, people buy a product in order to achieve that beachy look. You just have it inherently." Emri c****d an eyebrow at me before reaching for her purse. She was going to drive her car, but if necessary I could take it home with me. As we move down the stairs to the open living area, her mother looked up from her laptop briefly to acknowledge our entrance.
Are you planning to attend the party? Minda inquired while wearing a charming grin on her stunning face. Emrina looked just like her and I grinned back.
"We are. I joked that I would keep Emrina in line while Minda giggled to herself.
"In addition to you, Harry is going to be there. He phoned me today to let me know that he would be attending the party and would be returning home tonight. As I looked down at the ground, my stomach began to turn. I had a thing on Harry, who was Emri's older brother, and it had been going on for years at this point.
Emrina sneered at me and said with a smile, "We'll both have to keep him in line," and I smiled back at her. It's possible, Mom, that you won't see him till the next day.
"I hope to see each and every one of you tomorrow. Be safe, girls."
Emrina responded by saying that we would and then took me out to her vehicle through the garage.
We backed out of the driveway, and as soon as we were on the main road, she sped ahead of me while I scowled at her. I told her to "slow down" as Emrina giggled at her comment.
"I'm not moving quite that quickly." I c****d my head to the side while she waited at the traffic signal. As we made our way to the party, she turned up the volume on the radio before driving away, and I took in the sights along the way. Before she was killed in a car accident shortly after graduating high school, my mother lived in a sleepy but pleasant community in the state of Oregon. After I finished school, I intended to remain in this area so that I might have some fun.
We both attended the same college in San Francisco, and when we were away, we found ourselves missing the city. I started spending significant amounts of time with Emri and her family around the time that I was in middle school due to my mother's extensive travel for her painting work. She became somewhat estranged from us after the tragic tragedy that took the life of my father shortly after the conclusion of the fifth grade, and she began taking a lot of vacations.
Minda took me in as a foster child, and for the better part of my life, she served as a surrogate mother to me.
I peered out the window as she drove into a massive complex and made her way around the parking lot before pulling into a spot. After she exited the vehicle and started walking toward the structure that was in front of us, I followed her. The music gave away the location of the party, and I was curious as to whether or not all of the students resided in this area. It was quite noisy. People were loitering in front of the flat, and the door was left completely unlocked and unlocked.
I turned my head to look up the stairs as I heard someone scream Emrina's name and saw her wave at the person. I followed her lead and greeted the people that were there with a hesitant grin as they ran up the stairs. Emrina led the way through the door and made her way through the crowd while chatting her way to the kitchen. On her way, she looked at the cans packed in ice in coolers against the wall as well as the bottles that were displayed on the counter.
Emrina whispered to me in a low voice, "Nothing like a nice college shindig," which made me chuckle along with her. "Could you use anything?"
"You drink. I'll have a diet soda." As she nodded, I gave her my assurance. Before walking me into the living room, Emrina poured herself a drink and then went to the refrigerator to get a Coke for me to sip.
Apartment gatherings attracted an overwhelming number of guests. But this place was full of loud music and people crammed together trying to dance even though I preferred residences where I could enjoy some time outside and decompress. I took a sip from my drink and then started dancing in the living room with Emrina since I really liked the song that was playing.
I did have a passion for dancing, but as the room became more crowded, I found myself becoming squeezed in between the other guests. I couldn't help but chuckle, and then I informed Emrina that I had to go find the restroom.
I had to push my way through a mob that was dancing on a makeshift dance floor in order to get to the corridor. The fact that there was probably just one bathroom in the hallway that everyone was using made me frown. I had just located the line and was making my way toward the finish when I collided with someone and had to reach up to steady myself. When I looked up, I was met by emerald eyes, and the man who had confronted me was a tough wall. I began to apologize. "Harry," I whispered. "It's been a while."
“Yeah. Shauna?” He inquired as he ran his hand through his unkempt hair while doing so. I couldn't help but scowl as I observed Harry's bewildered expression.
"Yes, it's me." His perplexity was beyond my comprehension.
As he walked along the corridor and smiled at the people he saw, he remarked, "You have matured." Are you currently in that line of waiting?
I shrugged my shoulders and responded with "I guess" as I took a quick glance at it.
Harry said to me, "Come on," as he grabbed my hand and pulled me through the gap in the line. He entered the room, made his way across the carpet, and then shut the door behind him. "Here you go."
"How were you able to tell that this was located here?" I asked him while he was chuckling.
"I resided in this building with a few of my close friends. I'm familiar with the layout of the place, and the other members of the team won't mind if I come back. He gave a shrug and then opened the door to the restroom. "Here you go."
I gave a warm thank you grin and then went inside, after which I shut the door behind me. Even though it wasn't the cleanest restroom I've ever been in, it served its purpose. While I was looking at myself in the mirror, I went to the bathroom, did my business, and washed my hands. Why did Harry's expression change so drastically when he saw me? You thought I was the same person, didn't you? I c****d my head to the side and admitted to myself that I was a dork to a certain extent.
