Isla's Pov The call came early that morning. I’d been lying in bed, still trying to shake off the weight of yesterday’s exhaustion, when the phone rang. I wasn’t expecting anything, so I let it go to voicemail at first. But then I remembered the bakery, the resume, and the woman behind the counter. I picked up the phone, my heart still sluggish as I pressed the button. "Hello?" I said, my voice groggy from sleep. "Hi, is this Isla?" a voice asked, smooth and professional. "Yes, speaking." "This is Rebecca from Vance Enterprises. We received your resume, and I’d like to invite you for an interview this afternoon." My heart skipped a beat. Vance Enterprises. The biggest company in town. They were known for their impressive operations, their connections, and their reputation. If I landed this job, it would change everything. "Yes, of course. Thank you for considering me. I’d love to come in," I replied quickly, trying not to let my excitement show too much. "Great. Can you be here by two o'clock?" "Absolutely," I said, already sitting up and running a hand through my messy hair. "I’ll see you then." I hung up the phone, my mind spinning. This was it. This was the opportunity I had been waiting for. By the time two o’clock rolled around, I was sitting in the lobby of Vance Enterprises, trying to calm my nerves. The building was impressive, with sleek glass windows, modern decor, and an air of wealth that made me feel like I didn’t belong. I had done my best to put on a professional face, wearing a simple but smart outfit,a black blouse and slacks but the inside of me was a mess of nerves and doubts. Rebecca, the woman who had called me, greeted me warmly, leading me through the pristine hallways to a conference room. We made small talk as we walked, but my mind was elsewhere, thinking about the job, the company, and what this opportunity could mean for me. The interview went smoothly. The questions were standard, and I answered each one to the best of my ability. Rebecca seemed pleased with my responses, and when we were finished, she gave me a kind smile. “You’ll be a great fit for our team, Isla. I think you’ll do well here. We’ll reach out to you by the end of the week with the details.” I shook her hand, trying to hide the grin that was threatening to spread across my face. I had done it. By the time I got back to my apartment later that evening, the adrenaline had worn off, and the reality of the day hit me. I had made a step toward a fresh start toward a new life. But the exhaustion crept in quickly. I needed a moment to just sit, to breathe. I kicked off my shoes and collapsed onto the couch, still in my work clothes. The weight of the day was finally catching up with me. I had been so focused on getting the job, on surviving, that I hadn’t even thought about the other changes in my life. I ran a hand over my face, feeling the tension in my temples. It had been a long day. My stomach grumbled, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten much since lunch. As I moved toward the kitchen to grab something to eat, I noticed the little box on the counter. The pregnancy test. I bought it a few days ago, thinking it was silly too many late nights, and too much stress. I hadn’t thought it would come to anything. But as I stared at it now, I knew. The two pink lines. The unmistakable confirmation that my life was about to change in ways I hadn’t prepared for. My breath hitched as I took in the reality of the situation. A baby. It didn’t make sense. The one-night stand with the mysterious stranger, Dominic had been a mistake, a fleeting moment of weakness, a part of my life I had already pushed to the back of my mind. But now, with this new reality staring back at me, I couldn’t ignore it. The thought of raising a child alone terrified me. I wasn’t prepared. I didn’t have a support system. And most of all, I didn’t know if I could do it. But as the days passed and I processed the news, one thing became clear, I wasn’t going to reach out to Dominic. He had no idea who I was, no reason to even remember me. I had never planned to contact him, and the idea of doing so now felt even more impossible. I didn’t want to complicate my life. I had just begun to build something for myself here, and adding a man especially one who might never even know about the child seemed like an obstacle I didn’t need. I thought about the things I wanted for myself, for this child, and what kind of life I wanted to create. It would be just the two of us. Me and the baby. I would raise this child alone, the way I always had to do things. I could do this. I would find a way. I had no choice. With that decision, I felt a strange sense of clarity. There was a life to be built now. Not just for me, but for the child inside me. I had already survived so much. I could survive this too. The next few weeks went by in a blur. I worked hard to make the most of the opportunity at Vance Enterprises. I settled into my role quickly, finding my place among the team, and getting a routine down. It felt good to have something to focus on, something that was just mine. And, as time went on, the nagging thoughts about the pregnancy began to fade into the background. I was busy. So busy that I hardly had time to think about it. But then, one evening, as I was finishing up my work for the day, I looked up and saw Rebecca standing at my office door with a smile on her face. “I’ve got some good news, Isla,” she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement. I stood up, curious. “We’ve decided to offer you a full-time position. You’ve been doing an excellent job, and we think you’ll be a great addition to the team. How does that sound?” I couldn’t help the smile that broke across my face. It wasn’t just a job. It was a step toward something bigger, something more permanent. “Thank you,” I said, my voice thick with gratitude. “I’m so glad to be a part of this team.” Rebecca’s smile widened, and we shook hands. It was official now. This was my life, my future. And as I thought about the life growing inside me, I knew I was ready to take it on.
