Isla's Pov
Three years. It’s funny how quickly time slips away. Some days, it feels like it was just yesterday that I left the city, ran away from the heartbreak, and stepped into the unknown. But then I look at my twins, and I realize how much life has changed, how much I’ve changed.
The twins, Lily and Luke. They were everything I never knew I needed, everything I never planned for. They looked so much like him, with their jet-black hair and piercing icy blue eyes, hauntingly familiar eyes. Dominic’s eyes. Even now, I could still see flashes of him in their faces, and there were moments, rare moments when I wondered if they would ever meet their father. But then the thought passed. I wasn’t about to bring that man back into our lives, not after everything. Not after all this time.
Lily and Luke were identical, but they had their little personalities already. Lily, my quiet one, was always curious, always exploring, while Luke had a fire in him, a restlessness that seemed to echo my own. They were both brilliant in their ways, and I couldn’t be prouder of them. But being their mother? It wasn’t easy. It was exhausting, especially as a single parent, but I had learned to manage.
Somehow, I managed.
I spent my days balancing my work at Vance Enterprises with the never-ending duties of motherhood. The job was going well, and I had earned my place. I loved the work. I loved the challenge. But deep down, I knew I was more than just a secretary. I had bigger dreams, dreams that I hadn’t yet found the courage to chase.
Raising the twins, and building a life for us, took up most of my time and energy. But still, the ambition, the fire for something more was always there, simmering underneath the surface.
As I made my way through another long day at work, answering emails, organizing meetings, and making sure everything was running smoothly, I found myself distracted. I glanced at the clock and realized I was late to pick up the kids from their preschool. Again. My life had become a series of moments where I had to run to keep up, to balance everything just right, or else risk dropping the pieces. I couldn’t afford to make mistakes. Not with them.
When I finally made it to their school, I found Lily and Luke sitting together, their little hands clutching their toy trucks. They both looked up at me with smiles that made the world slow down for a moment. There was no greater joy than this, seeing them smile at me like I was their hero.
“Mommy!” Luke shouted, running toward me, his little legs barely able to keep up with his excitement.
“Hi, sweetheart,” I said, crouching down to meet him. His tiny hands wrapped around my neck, pulling me into a tight hug. I kissed his cheek, then turned to Lily, who was standing behind him, quietly observing.
“Hi, my beautiful girl,” I said softly, opening my arms for her. She smiled shyly and walked into my embrace.
Together, we left the school and made our way home. The evening was simple, dinner, bath time, bedtime stories, and kisses goodnight. I stayed with them until they fell asleep, watching the way they both clutched their stuffed animals and the way their breathing slowed as they drifted off to sleep.
And then, when the house grew quiet, I was left with my thoughts.
I had no idea how long I could keep up the charade of being the perfect mother and the perfect employee. I had built a life here, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more waiting for me. Something bigger.
The next day, everything changed.
I was sitting at my desk, finishing up a report when I heard the familiar ping of an email notification. It was from the higher-ups, Rebecca, the same woman who had hired me all those years ago. I clicked open the email and froze.
Dear Isla,
We are pleased to inform you that, due to your exceptional performance and dedication, we would like to offer you a transfer to our main branch in the city to work as the personal assistant to Mr. Dominic Moretti, the CEO of Vance Enterprises.
Please let us know your decision by the end of the week.
My heart thudded in my chest. The name “Dominic Moretti” hit me like a punch. I hadn’t heard it in so long. It was a name that I had tried to forget. But there it was, staring at me in black and white.
I thought about it for a long moment. A personal assistant. To the CEO. Dominic Moretti. He was the man I had one night with, the man whose eyes my twins inherited. But that was years ago. I had made a life for myself without him.
I leaned back in my chair, staring at the email. The offer was tempting. It was a chance to grow in my career, to step out of the background and into the spotlight. But could I work with him? Could I really walk into the same room as the man who had once been a stranger, the man whose presence still lingered in the quiet moments of my life?
The thought of it scared me. But the opportunity was too big to pass up.
As I sat there, contemplating my next move, I glanced at the photo on my desk, the one of Lily and Luke, both smiling brightly, their dark hair and icy blue eyes twinkling. I had made promises to them, promises to give them the best life I could. This job could be a stepping stone to a better future. A future that wasn’t just about survival, but about thriving. And they deserved that.
I ran a hand through my hair, exhaling slowly. This was my chance.
The days passed in a blur of preparation. I spoke to the children's school about the changes, arranged for a new living situation in the city, and organized the logistics of the move. The idea of moving back to the city made my stomach churn. It felt like I was going backward, not forward. But I didn’t have a choice. This was a professional opportunity I couldn’t ignore.
On the day I was set to leave, I stood in the doorway of my apartment, looking around one last time. It felt like the end of an era. The last three years of my life had been spent in this small, quiet town. I had grown here, learned how to be a mother, and found a rhythm in the chaos. But now, it was time to let go of it all.
I picked up the twins and kissed them each on the cheek.
“Ready to start a new adventure?” I asked softly.
They giggled and nodded, their little faces beaming with excitement, blissfully unaware of the weight of the change that was happening around them.
As we packed our things and headed to the city, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. The beginning of something bigger than I had ever imagined. Something that was about to test me in ways I wasn’t prepared for.
But as I looked at my children, their eyes bright and hopeful, I knew that whatever came next, I would do it for them. They were my everything. And absolutely nothing could take that away from me.
