Chapter 1 — Rejected
The moment the words left his mouth, the world tilted, and a cold emptiness filled my chest.
“I reject you, Elara.”
The ceremonial hall froze. Even the faint flicker of candlelight seemed to still in that moment. Whispers rose like shadows, sharp and cutting, as the pack processed what had just happened. My knees threatened to buckle, but I forced myself upright. To fall now would be to hand them the victory — to prove I was weak.
My fated mate, the one I had dreamed of all my life, stood before me, eyes cold, unyielding, and utterly devoid of hesitation. There was no hesitation, no regret — only certainty, and it cut deeper than any blade.
“I choose Lyra,” he said loudly, his voice carrying across the hall like a command. “Not an omega who can’t even shift properly.”
The words echoed in my mind, hammering relentlessly. Laughter rippled through the crowd — quiet at first, then cruel and mocking. My chest tightened, a white-hot pain clawing its way from my stomach to my throat. My wolf whimpered within me, coiling in silent rage, but there was nothing I could do.
The Elder raised his staff, his eyes flicking over me with a mixture of pity and finality. “By the laws of the Moon, the bond is broken.”
The words hit me like chains of ice, binding my limbs, freezing my breath. I could feel the weight of the entire pack pressing down, the scrutiny of every eye, the judgment, the whispers of gossip that would follow me for years. My hands shook, but I clenched them into fists, forcing myself to stand tall.
No one saw the shadow at the edge of the hall. No one noticed the burning red eyes watching from the darkness beyond the ceremonial doors. The Alpha. The one they whispered about in fear, the one who commanded respect with just a glance, was here. Watching.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and forced my gaze forward, refusing to let tears betray me. Lyra smirked from across the hall, her eyes glittering with victory. She had taken everything from me in one cruel moment, but I would not give her the satisfaction of breaking me.
Even as the pack members turned away, their laughter lingering in my ears, I could feel it. A pulse in the air, a weight in my chest, a stir in my soul. He was coming. The Alpha who feared nothing, who ruled with iron and fire, was here.
And somehow, I knew. My rejection was not the end. It was the beginning.
I didn’t know who he was yet. I didn’t know if he would be friend or foe, ally or enemy. All I knew was that the world had shifted, and there was no turning back.
Tonight, I had been humiliated. Tomorrow, I would rise.
