Gradually, Jordan was able to lead Gwen away from the press crowd outside. With his tall and bulky body, he asked Gwen to walk by his side quietly until he disappeared from the reporters towards the fire escape.
“Wait!” Gwen exclaimed. “Where are you taking me?”
“We have to get out of this hotel? You still don't get it?” Jordan tried to snap her out of it. “They kicked you out?”
“Argh!” Gwen chuckled as she recalled that annoying fact.
“Then... you don't have much time. CCTV is everywhere. Shut up and follow me!”
Reluctantly, Gwen tried to take a step. But after only a few seconds, she broke her steps. “Hey! Is this true? Are you commanding me?”
Jordan let out one breath calmly, then nodded. “Yes. You also said we're not bosses and bodyguards anymore, right?”
Gwen was speechless. It was all true.
“I know you might not trust me easily. But I would lay down my life for you. If anything goes wrong, you get rid of me.”
The cold tones the man spoke, as well as the extremely exaggerated-sounding sentence, made Gwen laugh. Did that mean Jordan was really on her side? But why? That's what made Gwen suspect him even more.
“Again...” Jordan stopped walking and turned to look at Gwen with his usual flat gaze. “I have resigned from The Park Group.” That was it. And Jordan took another quick step in front of Gwen on his long legs.
“Should I trust him?” Gwen muttered. “At least for this situation.”
Then, steadily, Gwen caught up to Jordan's pace. She tried to keep up with the man's pace while keeping a watchful eye. Even her husband and best friend could betray her. Whereas Jordan was only a former bodyguard.
“You tricked me?!” protested Gwen, looking in all directions. “Do you think they can't find me with all these CCTV cameras?”
“Right here.”
Gwen's brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”
Then quickly, Jordan pulled Gwen's hand, grasping it very tightly, entering into the gap between the two buildings. Even Gwen was dumbfounded and could not rebel. She just panicked and made no sound other than following the man's steps.
It looked like Jordan was avoiding the surveillance cameras. He seemed to want to trick catch, so Rayden and his group aimed to catch Gwen and lock her up again in the psychiatric hospital and became confused.
Their steps ended in a quiet area. There were only a few people having dinner in a small shop.
Gwen's breath caught. She repeatedly wiped the sweat from her forehead. She was exhausted from the tense escape from the afternoon until the sky was dark like today. She leaned against the wall of the building.
“Come on!” called Jordan.
Gwen widened her eyes. “Where to?”
Jordan didn't answer. He then positioned himself squatting behind Gwen. “Get on my back!”
“What are you, crazy!” Gwen kicked the man's broad back until he fell back slightly. Then the woman girded her loins. “It's safe now. Where else are you taking me?”
Jordan got up again. He looked at Gwen, who was much shorter than him. “Anywhere else but dinner?”
Gwen blinked her eyes repeatedly to dispel the awkward atmosphere as she smoothed her windblown hair.
“I know this area well. So I want to take you there,” Jordan continued.
They sat side by side with a bit of distance between them as they ate simple pasta on paper plates by the riverside where there were many food stands.
“Thank you for today. Go on.” Gwen said in the middle of chewing. “I will take care of myself.”
“It's not that easy to take care of yourself now. You are at the center of many people's conversations in this country. You are not a billionaire either...”
“Hey!” shouted Gwen, interrupting Jordan's sentence. “I am still a billionaire! They stole it from me!” She then chuckled. “Just watch! I am going back to my place!”
“You got away?” challenged Jordan.
“I will think about it.”
“Where are you going to think? You don't even have a place to stay. You got your credit cards suspended.”
Gwen rubbed her neck, which didn't itch because she was just talking to keep him out of it because she was honestly in a tizzy until a teardrop caught in her eye.
“Are you crying?” Jordan was surprised because he had never seen his boss weak.
Gwen hurriedly wiped away the tears. “The wind is so strong, my eyes are watering! What an i***t!”
Silently, Jordan watched Gwen's movements. She seemed to be starting to feel the shock of her life after having been held back and betrayed by the closest person to the point of being drained of all her wealth and losing the much-anticipated baby as well. Gwen even almost died from depression.
Jordan let out his breath for a moment. “Just cry. Just pretend I don't exist.”
In that instant, Gwen released the tears she had been holding back. She screamed in pain while beating her chest on the riverbank. The pain of her life seemed to be looking for its fulfillment.
Time passed only with her crying until she finally got tired.
“Are you done with your crying?” Jordan asked.
“Go away! Why are you still here?”
“If I leave, what about you?”
“Hey! I followed you all the way here. It doesn't mean I trust you. You got it?”
“I do!” Jordan insisted. “But you can't do anything without me right now!”
“It's none of your business!”
“I get it. But you should at least spend the night somewhere decent for a while. If you don't have a sense of direction and purpose, how will you get back to your place?” Jordan snapped her out of it. “Going back to your place that someone else has taken is not easy. It requires a strategy. You need a quiet place to think about it.”
Gwen didn't respond.
“Then... stay with me.”
“What?!” Gwen was shocked.
“Otherwise... you will get caught by them.”
That sentence made Gwen rethink even harder. Despite her anxiety, she tried hard to remain rational and had to be on guard for Jordan. A very flat person seemed to be even more suspicious.
Jordan reached for his vibrating cell phone in his shirt pocket. He saw several incoming messages. But his focus was on the top one.
From: Mr. Rayden
I know you are with Gwen. Bring her to me!
Those sharp hazel eyes then zeroed in on Gwen's helpless figure-the woman seemed to be weighing things up.
