The next morning, the men were up as the sun rose. They thanked the Suttons for their hospitality, wished them well, and were on their way. They rode past Daniel’s former home.
“Are you alright? Robert asked.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine. Jist hard losin’ two families all at once.”
Robert knew the boy was referring to Falling Rain and Spotted Rabbit. His mention of this brought Red Horse to his mind. Nathaniel was ahead of him, the Indian brave behind. He reached up and felt the bloodstone around his neck. Closing his eyes and sighing deeply, he removed the stone and placed it in his pocket, where it lay next to its mate so long ago placed there to await what fate had in store.
