Chapter 14 The long winter had turned to spring. The snow had melted and new shoots came forth, the flocks of geese and ducks had returned. Robert and Red Horse were taking a canoe up the Scioto to a small lake to fish. Robert sat in the front of the craft while the more experienced Red Horse paddled from behind. Robert had not used a canoe as a child and had had no reason to until now. He smiled now as he remembered his clumsy attempts to steer when they had first pushed off this morning. Red Horse had been patient with him and now he was getting to understand how to paddle in unison with the brave and to allow Red Horse to steer the dug-out. “You are Shawnee now,” he had said, “You are a great hunter, now you will become a great fisherman.
