Several days had passed and I was still trapped inside the walls of his house. It felt so unreal how my life just changed so fast.
I spent the days mourning my parents. I was angry and hurt, and even more frustrated by the fact that I couldn’t do anything about it.
I hated Ruiz with everything in me. The more I saw him, the more I got angrier. I tried tolerating him for the past few days.
The only solace I found was knowing that my siblings were safe. But Ruiz threatened to destroy their lives if I ever tried escaping again.
The members of my father's gang and other members of my family gave my parents a befitting funeral. I couldn’t attend because Ruiz hadn’t let me leave the gates ever since he kidnapped me.
He thought he did me a favor by recording the funeral for me. He even had the guts to attend after he killed them. The whole thing didn’t make sense, but I wasn’t surprised because I always heard inhumane stories about him.
Initially, I thought they were rumors because I didn't imagine any human being to be as cruel as that, but he proved me wrong.
I had no idea why he didn’t want to let me leave. I promised not to say anything to the authorities but he still held me captive.
Most people would be wondering where I was. They might even think I was dead or missing. I was determined to do anything to escape, I just needed a little time.
It was still early in the morning, I rose from my bed and went into the bathroom to wash my face. Everything felt the same and it was exhausting.
After I finished from the bathroom, I went downstairs to the kitchen. Ever since Ruiz drugged me through his chef, I didn’t eat anything except I made it by myself.
Just as I was about to start making breakfast, I heard footsteps from the living room. I rushed outside because I wanted to talk to Ruiz.
“Good morning, Sunshine.” He said as soon as he saw me walking towards him. “How did you sleep?” It was his regular question which I never answered.
I ignored him and went straight to the point. “I need my phone. I need you to get my phone from my house. It is on my desk in my room.”
I remembered where it was vividly because I had kept it aside when I was studying the day he paid a visit and killed my parents.
Ruiz looked at me like I was insane.
I rolled my eyes at him. “I said I need my phone!” I repeated when he remained silent. I knew it was a risky demand but I wanted to try my luck.
“You know things can get messy if you have access to your phone?” Ruiz raised a brow at me. “And I don’t want things to get messy.” He added and continued walking to the door.
I grabbed his arm and he paused, then turned to look at me. “Please, I need to talk to my friends. I need them to know I’m okay.”
Ruiz smiled. “Give me their names and I’ll help you pass the information.” I felt like kicking him in the balls but I remained calm.
“Please, I’ve promised you that I won’t do anything funny or try to escape anymore.” That was clearly a lie but I needed to say something that would make him bring my phone to me.
My close friends from school would be worried. Especially Bonnie, because we talked every single day. She didn’t know much about my family because I went all the way to New York for school.
But she must’ve heard the news of their demise and would have been trying to reach me. s**t, she would be thinking something also happened to me.
“I can’t trust you,” Ruiz said, his expression unreadable.
“You should trust me.” I countered.
“Why?” He demanded.
“Because I love my siblings so much and I wouldn’t do anything that’ll make you hurt them.”
Ruiz looked like he was contemplating it for a while. “What do you need your phone for?” He asked.
“I need to keep up with medical school and tell my friends that I’m okay.”
“Are you sure? That’s all?” He asked and I nodded my head, trying to appear sincere.
“Okay, I’ll get you your phone.”
My eyes grew wide in disbelief. Ruiz was so unpredictable. I didn’t expect him to agree but I was glad he did. I couldn’t wait to talk to my friends and see what the media was saying about my family.
“When do I get it?” I asked, suppressing my excitement. I didn’t want to act too excited before he became suspicious and changed his mind.
“I’m going out now. You’ll get it when I return.” He replied and pulled out his phone from his back pocket. “You’re making breakfast for us, right?” He said and walked out of the door to make a call.
Was that his way of asking me to make him breakfast?
I didn’t follow him or ask him anything. I just went back into the kitchen to make my food. I was hungry because I didn’t have anything to eat the previous night.
I was thinking about my life and I lost my appetite.
As I rummaged through the cupboards to find something to make, I realized everything I needed for any kind of meal was available.
I guess he bought them because I always made my own food by myself. As I began preparing the food, I couldn’t help but think of Ruiz asking me to make him breakfast.
If only I had access to the outside world. I would have made him a nice breakfast but it was going to be the last meal he ate before his demise.
