“We need to stop by the Martinez resident to pick up something first,” I informed Lorenzo as he got into my car. We were on our way to a meeting but I needed to take a detour to get Ava’s phone.
Lorenzo had a puzzling expression on his face. “What business do you have at the Martinez resident?” Lorenzo still hadn’t come to terms with the fact that I held Ava captive. He felt it was a bad idea.
“She wants her phone,” I replied as I started the engine.
Lorenzo had a shocked expression registered on his face. “You want your captive to have access to her phone?” He asked, his voice laced with disbelief.
I nodded my head. “Yeah,” I replied causally. “And don’t refer to her as my captive, it makes it sound bad.” I corrected him like I had done before.
Lorenzo raised his hands in mock surrender. “If you say so. But I think it’s a bad idea to give her access to a phone.” He added, his voice tinged with genuine concern.
I knew it was a bad idea but I had other plans. I wasn’t going to give her access to her phone just like that. Plus, she knew what would happen if she tried to do any funny thing.
“You know me too well, Lorenzo. I’ve got this under control.” I assured him, trying to alleviate his concern.
As we drove into the city, I increased the volume of the car stereo and the music filled the car. After a while, I caught a glimpse of flashing lights in the rearview mirror and groaned inwardly.
A cop was tailing us. I smacked my teeth in annoyance and pulled over, wondering what the unexpected interruption was about.
I rolled down my window as the officer approached. His unfamiliar face came as a surprise to me. I hadn’t seen him patrolling our streets before.
“What’s the issue, officer?” I asked, my tone firm but polite. The other officers who patrolled in the city would never stop my vehicle because they all recognized it.
“License and registration, please.” He replied, his voice firm.
I didn’t have those. I never cared to have them with me.
I shrugged. “I’m afraid I don’t have them with me.” My nonchalant behavior made the officer look at me in disbelief.
"You're not from around here, are you?" The officer asked, his eyes narrowing slightly as he waited for my response.
But before I could even open my mouth, Lorenzo cut in, his voice low and even, but laced with a hint of warning.
"Ask your colleagues who Ruiz and Lorenzo are," he said, his gaze locked on the officer. "Next time, do not stop this car when you see us passing."
With that, he reached over and rolled up the window, shutting the officer out. I raised an eyebrow, impressed by Lorenzo's move.
I wasn’t surprised because Lorenzo had always been impatient. But I loved toying with people, their reactions were entertaining to watch.
The officer's face fell, clearly taken aback by Lorenzo's actions. He took a step back and I drove off before he could say anything else.
As we pulled away, I couldn’t help but smirk at the officer’s surprised face in the rearview mirror. After a short drive, we arrived at the Martinez residence.
Lorenzo waited for me in the car while I went inside the building. The place was as silent as a graveyard because nobody lived there anymore.
I felt a little bad for destroying Ava’s family but I shoved away those thoughts. If her papa hadn't stolen from me, he would still be alive.
She described her room earlier, so I just followed the directions. When I got inside, I saw the phone lying on the desk.
I got distracted for a second. My eyes darted around the room and fell on the pictures hanging on the wall. They were pictures of her and her siblings throughout their lives.
Ava grew into a fine woman. I couldn’t help but admire her piercing brown eyes and long black hair that cascaded down her back.
I was still lost in the pictures when I got a text from Lorenzo, asking me to hurry up. I found a small brown box in a corner and placed some of the pictures there.
After that, I grabbed the phone and a charger before heading back to meet Lorenzo outside. Ava was going to appreciate the pictures.
“What is inside the box? I thought you went there for her phone?” Lorenzo raised a brow at me as I settled in the driver’s seat.
“I took some of her pictures. She’ll appreciate them.” I replied, my eyes focused on the road. I didn’t want to see Lorenzo’s judgemental face.
Lorenzo was probably tired of me because of the way he changed the topic. “What is the meeting about?” He asked, running his hand through his hair.
I shrugged, my mind still fixed on my ultimate goal. “I have no idea. I’m just attending these meetings because of my plans.” My true intention was to strategically position myself to overthrow the don of the mafia.
As the new don, I would get exclusive information that would lead me to my brother’s killer. I wasn’t going to rest until I put Marco’s killer on the ground.
I couldn’t even wait to figure out who would do something as cruel as that. My brother’s lifeless body was delivered to my house and I had no idea who did. That s**t still haunted me.
It was really disrespectful but it wasn’t unexpected due to our line of work. But that didn’t change the fact that I was going to get my revenge. Even if it took me forever, I was still going to get my revenge.
The meeting was a brief one. After the meeting, I dropped Lorenzo at his house, and made a quick stop, before heading back to the house.
I was excited to show Ava the pictures.
