1. The Way We Are
~Lydia~ I watched Lauren pick up her handbag, wearing sexy attire as if she was going out on a date. I already had a hint that she would meet Sir Rex outside the hotel. She has been cheating on her husband for almost a year now. I pity Sir Andre, he is a good husband, loyal and devoted to his wife. He would never know that his wife was cheating on him with his brother. "Ma'am, where are you going?" I asked. "I'm going to meet someone, a friend," Lauren replied casually, smiling while checking her phone. "Are you going to meet Sir Rex again and have a rendezvous with him behind your husband's back?" I asked bravely, bracing for what's going to happen next. Lauren glared at me, her eyes blazing with anger like a lioness ready to tear its prey. "Shut up! You are getting bolder!" she said and delivered a painful slap on my face. Ouch that hurts! I caressed part of my cheeks, burning from her slap. I want her to wake from her sinful desires and stop cheating on her husband. "You are lucky that my autistic son likes you, and you are the only one who can tame him. If not, you have already been fired from your job a long time ago!" Lauren shouted vehemently. Nostrils flaring with anger, she hit me on the shoulder again and shoved me to the floor viciously. "That's what you get for being a meddler!" Not yet satisfied, she threw the box of tissue on my face, almost hitting my eyes. "Why are you mad at me? I'm just telling the truth," I protested, trying to shield myself from her physical assaults. "Because you are intruding into my private affairs! You are just a nanny! A long distance cousin of mine. You have no right to interfere with my private affairs! Do you understand?" Lauren was about to deliver another slap in my face when her phone suddenly rang. Thank God. Save by the bell. Lauren picked up her phone from the bed, read the message and smiled again. I know that smile too well. The smile of a woman in love. She must be chatting with Sir Rex. Her actions speak louder than words. She really loves the other twin brother more than her husband. Between the twin handsome brothers, my plain-looking 25-year-old self, liked Sir Andre the most. He's the best! A complete package, the apple in my eyes. The lunatic Lauren put her phone down on the dresser table then went to the bathroom. When she emerged from the door a few moments later, anger was gone from her face. "I'm going out now. Take care of my son," she told me casually, as if nothing bad ever took place between us. "But what if Sir Andre suddenly arrives here and asks for your whereabouts, what am I going to tell him?" I asked. Lauren shook her head. "My husband texted me that he will arrive here at the resort tomorrow morning, not today," she replied coldly. She went to the dresser table for a quick retouch and applied a red lipstick on her lips, then left the room. I stared at the closed door, shaking my head. What a shameless woman! I picked up the discarded tissues from the dresser table and put them in the trash bin. Lauren is a very lucky woman, both loved by the twin Malcolm brothers. She had everything; a loving billionaire husband and an adorable six-year-old son. Although Archie is an autistic child and difficult to manage, he is a sweet boy since I was able to manage his violent temper effectively in my own way. Dealing with autistic children requires the patience of a monk and unconditional love which Archie's very own mother can not provide or, shall I say...refuse to provide. Lauren's life and marriage is almost perfect in my own opinion. Despite how lucky she is, Lauren was still planning on divorcing her husband to be with Sir Rex. I know... because I heard her many times discussing the divorce with Sir Rex on the phone whenever her husband was out of the mansion. But I heard last week, Lauren finally informed her husband about the divorce. Sir Andre was looking extremely sad and devastated afterward. Today's family vacation in this pristine beach resort was Sir Andre's attempt to patch up his relationship with his wife for the last time. He was trying to salvage a fractured relationship with his wife. My heart is breaking for Sir Andre because I know how much he loves his wife. He is a good man, he is kind to me. He deserves a good, loyal wife. I hate my cousin Lauren for cheating on her husband. But I like Sir Andre very much. Just thinking about him makes my heart flutter. I smiled like a woman in love. The reason is that I adore Sir Andre. I have had a huge crush on him ever since I became his son's nanny. He is a complete package. He has everything I ever wanted for a husband. Too bad, he is already married and madly in love with his cheating wife. I wonder when Karma will knock on Lauren's door and make her pay for cheating and hurting her good husband? Lauren doesn't deserve Sir Andre's love and devotion. I am better fit to be his wife because I love his son like he was my own child. Lauren doesn't love her son, for her Archie was a big burden, a big mistake, a shameful defect that marred her perfect life. Lauren told me once that if she had known in advance that she would give birth to a special child after marrying her husband, she would not marry Sir Andre at all. When I told her that it was not her husband's fault that they had an autistic child together, she slapped me hard on the cheeks. I saw stars after the painful slap. I become Lauren's punching bag whenever she gets frustrated in dealing with her autistic son who equally hates her. I can't leave her because she is my distant cousin and her husband is generous to me. I stick to them like glue. Lauren was born into a rich family on my mother's side and never experienced hardship in her life. Unlike me... I wish I could have her life. I wish I was Sir Andre's wife. If that happens, I will become the happiest woman alive on earth. When my brother needed an operation for his kidney transplant, Sir Andre financed the operation. When my mother needed surgery for her eye cataract, Sir Andre paid the bills. When my sister needed money for her tuition, and I was short of money, he offered help. When my family was kicked out of the house we rented, he gave me the money for a six-month rental down payment on another house. He didn't charge a penny towards my salary. Not only is Sir Andre very generous to me, he is also very handsome. That's why I love him so much. He was genuinely grateful to me for taking good care of Archie, for loving his son unconditionally even if I'm not his mother. I told him that I love Archie, such an adorable kid, he is like a son to me, and he appreciates that about me. I always fantasized about him. Before I went to sleep at night, I thought of him. Sigh, if there is a next life, I wish God would give me Sir Andre because I wanted him to be my husband. I will love him and treat him better. Sigh. Enough of daydreaming! I released a deep sigh and continued my chores, opening the luggage bags and putting the rest of the clothes and Archie's toys in the closet. Suddenly, the door opened and Lauren came back inside. "I forgot my wallet," she told me. I watched her enter the bedroom and emerged a few seconds later, holding her expensive bag. Lauren walked to the door, stopped and looked at me over her shoulder. "Take care of my son and behave!" she warned me sternly, grabbing the door handle. "Yes Ma'am," I responded with a nod. But before Lauren could leave the room, the building suddenly shook and swayed. What's going on? "Oh my God, there is an earthquake!" Lauren screamed in horror. We thought the shaking of the building would stop, but it continued, and my instinct told me things were about to get worse and more dangerous, so I had to get Archie out of the building safely. We are on the 20th floor of the building, a long way to go down to the first floor. "I'm going to get Archie!" I ran to the room, my heart beating frantically in my rib cage. "Hurry up! I will wait for you in the elevator!" Lauren shouted in a panicky voice, bolting out of the room in the blink of an eye. My eyes widened in shock and disbelief. What the heck? Did she just leave us like that? Damn, how could Lauren leave me and her son in the room and save herself? "Dear God, please keep us safe!" I prayed earnestly. Anxiety is eating me up, making me weak on the knees. I'm feeling nervous and terrified as I enter the bedroom, fighting gravity. I bent down and with both hands I grabbed Archie's sleeping form, but that was also the moment the terrible thing happened. The ceiling of the room collapsed, and I felt the weight of the heavy fragments slamming on my back, painfully pressing me down to the bed, my body instinctively shielding Archie from danger. The last thing I remembered, Archie was screaming and crying in pain beneath me. I passed out.
