Sebastian
Sebastian sighed as he neared Drew’s father's room, he had to finish wrapping up the details on some of the paperwork and needed to collect the poor man’s charts. He paused as he heard voices inside the room, one he knew all too well. Jason or Dr. Plastic, as he was so titled these days. Jason was arrogant. Sebastian remembered him as being further in his studies than him back in medical school, graduating several years sooner than him from the program. They went to separate hospitals for their internship and that was that. But Jason’s voice was pretty distinctive and fake sounding, there was no doubt in his mind on who else must be in that room with Drew.
He pushed on and went into the room. Jason ignored Drew’s last comment to appraise him. He eyed Jason wearily. To say the least, they were not friends back in school. Jason cooley strode past him out of the room. Jason was such an arrogant fool. Sebastian was not surprised to learn that Jason had chosen plastics, a specialty just as shallow as the man performing the surgery.
He looked at Drew, he could only imagine what was running through her head. She looked like she could break at any moment. He could tell she was just trying to hold it together. What he found himself doing next kind of shocked even him, but he didn’t cut it short or avoid it when he found that he had gone up to her and had pulled her into his embrace in an act of comfort. He was even more surprised when she didn’t fight him on it either, considering he was the operating surgeon on her father in the first place.
After a good moment, he felt brave enough to ask, “How do you know Jason?”
She finally pulled back from him to answer, “It was a long time ago but we attended the same school.” She laughed a bit dryly, “He is a total tool.”
“You aren’t wrong,” he laughed, “I know he was that way in college and didn't realize it was something he was born with.”
She looked confused, “No I wouldn’t have known him that long ago, we just went to college together,”
It was his turn to look confused, “College?”
“Oh yeah, I mean I dropped out before my internship, but yeah we went to medical school together, I ended up having to drop from the program to care for my dad.” She responded seemingly a bit nervous.
He couldn’t understand why she would be nervous. “It is a shame you didn’t finish. You probably would have made a great doctor.”
“Yeah, but life happens, you know.” She said sadly.
“Indeed, Drew, if there is anything you need please don’t hesitate to ask,” Sebastian said, turning to the door, his brain firing on all engines. “I should probably go ahead and take this chart back to make my notes on this, there will be someone coming up from the morgue to retrieve your father shortly, take your time.” He finished, still turned towards the door, “Take care.” He added softly before opening the door and leaving the room.
Sebastians mind was working on overdrive at that point. He had some connections he wanted to look into. Sure, he should probably ask Drew first before pursuing this idea, but he wanted to make sure it was even possible. He didn’t want to give her false hope, but also figured that if this worked out right, it would give her something to look forward to and give her the chance to live the life she truly wants despite everything she has been through.
Drew
It was a week since her father passed away, she took a couple of days to return to work. So this morning was just like any morning outside of not looking in on her dad or making an extra cup of coffee. Drew sat at her kitchen table contemplating life with her coffee in hand. It was going to be a struggle to keep her apartment after this month. Losing the benefits her father brought in from the state was going to floor her in many ways. She was going to have to move into something she could afford on just her income alone. At this point she honestly just felt numb, going through the motions, she looked down at her half-drunk coffee and sighed. She then stood and grabbed her keys and bag to leave for work.
After riding the subway for the past hour, she was finally in the locker room putting away her stuff and getting ready to start on the first floor she was assigned to clean that day. It was just going to be the same routine she had fallen into for the past couple of days. She was trying to keep from thinking about how alone she was now in this world, so diving into cleaning bedpans and doing heaps of laundry seemed to be the best course of action.
Drew started walking towards the exit to go to her first floor, she had yet to see Maria today but as she passed the supervisors office, Maria stepped out.
“Oh hey how are you doing?” Maria asked.
“Not too bad, just on my way to the floor,” Drew replied to her friend.
“Oh, don’t go that way yet. The supervisor wanted to talk to you first…” She said, halting Drew.
“Okay, well I guess I’ll see you at lunch,” Drew responded walking towards the supervisor’s office now.
Drew walked into Rita’s office and Rita was on the phone, she held up one finger indicating that Drew should just wait a second. Drew sat down in the chair in front of her supervisor’s desk and sat back to wait for Rita to finish the call. She almost laughed when the idea crossed her mind that maybe this would be a chance to ask for a raise, though she doubted they would even consider that anyways, they get regular raises every year based on their performance and the length of time they had been working for the company. So the idea of asking for one in this line of business was pretty hilarious.
Rita finished the call five minutes later, she sat the phone back on his receiver and turned her attention to Drew.
“I have an extra bit of work for you, I don’t like to put this on you considering what you have had to deal with this past week but you were requested personally,” Rita continued, “I find it strange but Dr. Sebastian Hart requested you for a coffee spill in his office.”
“You can’t send anyone else?” Drew asked, somewhat annoyed that he would do that. Wasn’t it some sort of abuse of power?
“He requested you,” Rita replied. “I would send someone else, but I will hear about it from my manager, because whatever the staff of this hospital wants they get,” she explained, as that was basically the only reason.
Drew sighed, Rita probably had her hands tied in some sort of legal procedure in the handbook or something with that crazy regard, “Okay, I’ll get up there as soon as I can before I start my usual work.” She responded, getting to her feet.
Rita nodded her agreement, “Thank Drew, come to me if you need anything, though okay? I know losing your father has been hard.”
Drew chuckled, trying to keep it light, “Maybe a raise? That would be a huge help right now.”
Rita laughed, “If I had that power, I would…you are certainly one of my better crew members.”
Drew smiled, “Thank you, I appreciate hearing that, Rita.”
Drew turned at that point and started towards the door, so she could snag an elevator up to the office portion for the doctors in the hospital. She wondered if it was really just a coffee spill that Sebastian needed her to clean up, she groaned. She really didn’t have the time or patience for anything else or the mental capacity to handle anything else either.
