Working Relationship

972 Words
Drew’s alarm started blaring at five thirty, she woke up with a groan and turned off her alarm. She got out of bed and took off to the kitchen to start coffee for her and her dad, this was the same morning ritual she has had for years at this point. Ever since she started working at the hospital. No, her dad could not put her through college but this job was the closest she could get with no degree; to be in the trenches so to speak. After she got her coffee pot turned on; she went to the bathroom to shower real quick and put her scrubs on. Granted they were the brown ones worn by the janitorial department but they were scrubs nonetheless. Drew had slowly convinced herself that she did important work, keeping the operating theatre pristine and patients' rooms tidy. However, there was still a small part of her that dreamed of operating, dreaming of putting stents in someone’s heart. But at this point she saw it as just too late to go to school for all that time, she would still have so much schooling, so many years before she even saw the inside of the OR like that. As Drew stepped out of the shower, she grabbed a towel off the rack and started drying her brunette hair, her hair took a lot of squeezing the water out before she was satisfied with it enough to pull it into a tight bun, her hair was thick and this kept it out of her eyes for the day. She patted her face dry and the rest of her body before putting on fresh underthings and pulling on her scrubs. The coffee she started should be ready now, so she just tosses her clothes from before into her hamper and starts off to the kitchen to prepare her and her dad a cup of coffee. She poured her coffee into a thermos and took her dad his cup of coffee. She entered the room and her dad looked up from a paper he was reading on the edge of his bed. She set the coffee down on his table and went and silently helped her dad to his chair. “Thank you, are you just getting ready to leave Drew?” He asked, settling into his coffee with a sip. “Yes, you know I take the subway, it takes forever some days.” She told her dad. “Well, have a good day at work honey,” he responded, picking up a crossword book to do over his coffee. Drew knew he got lonely with the hours she worked, but it was not cheap to live even in this little apartment and her dad's doctors bills were piling up. She sighed, grabbing her bag and thermos of coffee before stepping out of the apartment and locking the door behind her. His nurse had a key to get in, so she was not worried about that as she made her way down to the street. Sebastian Sebastion fiddled with the button on the cuff of his dress shirt as his driver pulled up to the hospital, his mind on the papers he knew would be sitting on his desk needing to be signed off on because of his role as Chief of Surgery. He smiled though knowing that he had a heart consult though later that morning, the patient needed several valves cleared and stented to allow for better circulation through her heart. He had a new procedure that he was going to perform for the first time in mind to help this patient extend their life exponentially in comparison to the common one performed all across every OR in the US. His car stopped at the hospital entrance and he got out of the car and started to make his way to the front doors. As soon as Sebastian got inside the building he headed towards the bank of elevators on the first floor and grabbed the first one that the door opened on. He stepped into the elevator and tapped the button that would take him to the floor that held his office when he realized he was not alone on that elevator and she was busy texting someone on her phone. So this allowed him a moment to look over her brunette hair pulled into a tight bun and the way her scrubs hugged her hips. “I guess we meet again Ms. Drew” he said with a chuckle. At that moment Drew turned and looked so startled, her green eyes wide, she stammered out a “Good morning Doctor,” and then turned to focus on the elevator doors. He could tell he made her nervous, but he really didn’t know why. Sebastian really hopped in a way that he didn’t scare her but at the same time, that awkward situation should have never happened, he did not like being embarrassed like that in front of his colleagues. He doesn’t really know what made him do it, but he leaned forward as close as he could to her ear, she was clearly frightened or put off by him, so he took this moment to see what would happen, “You look very lovely today, less soaked and dirty from the rain.” He then casually strode off the elevator when the bell dinged signaling that they had arrived at the floor he needed. Some made him feel a little reckless around her, but he needed to focus on his job for now. Sebastian could not help but be curious about her and he sighed as he sat down at his desk and started going through the papers on his desk that needed to be addressed, it was better to focus on work.
