Daddy, I Want My Mummy

The cold night air stayed silent by the countryside until it was disturbed by the heavy footsteps of Katniss Radley. A young 23-year-old who in the daylight was a stunning young woman in her bloom but right now she was a bloody mess. Her feet were bare, her hair was everywhere but in shape, her dress had torn by her left side and exposed a nasty cut, it was bleeding but Katniss was too panicked to notice. She kept running as fast as she could. Katniss was exhausted but she couldn't stop, not with the two hefty men who were quite a distance behind her. Her life was in danger! As Katniss turned a corner and found a path, she quickly took it. She knew she was lost and wouldn't find her way back home but she didn't care, that problem would take care of itself if she could come out alive. She entered the path and her right foot hit a stone she hadn't seen ahead. She stumbled and rolled into the bush beside the path. The pain shot through her like a bullet, and she cursed under her breath, but she knew better than to scream even though the pain was great. She held her mouth with her two hands and muffled the painful grunt that came from her. Katniss looked at her toe, she noticed she had lost her big toe nail. “Did you see her?” A voice said Katniss knew it was one of the men chasing her. She froze in the spot she had fallen after hitting her leg on the stone. “No, maybe she went this way,” another voice replied. That was Jay and Floyd, Katniss only met them today when they had bundled her into their car. She only knew their name because that was how they addressed each other when they discussed how to murder her and get rid of her body. “Jay, she couldn't have gone far” Floyd called out again “Check the bushes” Jay replied From where Katniss was sitting quietly trying to hide, she saw Jay approach the path she tried to take. He was holding a flashlight and he pointed it to the stone she had hit her leg. He must have noticed her blood stain on it because he knelt to inspect it. Katniss' heart skipped a beat, she needed to move fast. She knew that soon Jay will point his flashlight in her direction and see her and that means death. She muttered a prayer and felt around the bush as quietly as she could. She was happy when she felt a small rock, it wasn't enormous but it could do little damage. Katniss leaped out of the bush and screamed with all her might as she landed the rock on Jay's head, hitting him twice. She watched him crumble in pain and hold his head. “Jay… I hear her…” Floyd called out from some feet away. Katniss took to her heels and fled into the opposite direction of Floyd's approaching footsteps. ***** Klaus Koch ran into the emergency unit like a mad man, the nurses were startled by the sight before them for a second before they split into action. Klaus had run in screaming in Dutch to the nurses, but no one could understand him because this was an American hospital in Miami. But the heavily pregnant woman he carried in his arms was a situation that they didn't need an interpreter to help them understand. “Het spijt me…I am sorry…” Klaus said “I am panicking…please help my wife” A team of nurses had come to his side with a stretcher and gently took his wife from him and placed her on it. Tears fell from Klaus' face. “Oh, Melanie…please be alright” He said as tears stung his eyes. He looked at his wife in the peach dinner dress he had gotten her, the dress now looked unrecognizable from the amount of blood that soaked it. They quickly wheeled her away while they put an oxygen mask over her face but Klaus chased after them. “Let me be there with her,” he pleaded. But a Doctor took his arm and gently guided him. “Sir I need to take a look at you too… you are bleeding” she said. “No, I am fine” Klaus replied He just wanted to make sure Melanie would be fine. “Sir please, you have a cut on your head and from the look of it, you might have hit your head, I have to make sure you don't have a concussion” “I need to be with my wife” “I assure you sir that she is in good hands, let me just take a look at you, so that when she comes to, she will find you in a good shape too” Klaus sighed and let the tears he had been holding fall freely. “She didn't want to eat out…she had been feeling blue because of our baby that she is expecting….” “It's okay….what's your name…sir?” The doctor said as he led him to a seat. “Klaus Koch…" The doctor looked at him again… “Koch, as in Koch Inc.? “Yes…I need to know that my wife would be okay” “I am sorry Mr. Koch…let me make sure you are okay while the doctors attend to your wife” Klaus tried to bring himself to a calm, he couldn't stop blaming himself. He was the one who convinced Melanie to come out for dinner. She had just wanted to spend some time alone with their two and half year old daughter, Nora but he thought she needed some spoiling. He had gotten her a dress that fit her baby bump perfectly and when the stylist he had flown in to style her for the evening was done with her, she looked so beautiful. Not that she needed a stylist but he just wanted to make her feel special on her birthday. Nora whose vocabulary was still building had said “Biububu mama!” Her way of saying Beautiful. Oh Nora! What would he tell his little girl? Klaus felt a needle go into his arm and tears stung his eyes but it wasn't the prick of the needle, it was the fear of losing the love of his wife and his unborn child. They had barely made it to the restaurant when a car suddenly took a wrong turn and ran into them. He slammed on the brakes out of panic and Melanie got thrown through the windshield of the car breaking the glass and landed on the road. She had not used her seat belt because it choked her belly. She was 32 weeks gone. Just one wrong turn and Melanie was in the emergency unit. Soon after a doctor appeared from inside and came to meet him. When he saw the doctor's face, he knew what was coming but didn't want to hear it “I am sorry….” “No…please no…” “She is gone…and your baby too…” Klaus' legs gave way under him and he crashed into the ground. It was then he finally felt the pain, truly he had hit his head, but then, the pain that the only woman he had ever loved had died was far greater. ***** Katniss knew she had to keep running or she would be done for. She remembered hearing the men's conversation in the car when they thought she was still passed out from the chloroform they used on her. She had heard them talking on the phone to the person who wanted her dead. Katniss' mind burned, she was out of breath as well. Even her chest hurt badly but she kept running. Suddenly from close by she heard Floyd roar. “You silly girl, you better hope I don't catch you!” Katniss looked behind and saw Floyd. From the look on his face, she knew he had found his injured partner. Floyd was now holding a gun. He c****d it and pointed it toward her as he ran after her. Katniss increased her speed and ran blindly. But she didn't see the “danger ahead” sign because next thing she knew, Floyd had shot her at her and she jumped. She had hoped to land on solid ground but to Katniss' horror she kept falling. It took her body hitting different rocks as she kept tumbling down to realize she had fallen off a cliff. She felt her bones breaking with each tumble until finally, she felt the chilly waters at the bottom receive her body as she crashed into it. “So this is how I die?” Was the last thought Katniss had as she blacked out while the unforgiving waters accepted her.
