Chapter 1: The Slave's Blood
The cold stone floor bit into my knees.
I had been kneeling in the Vampire King's throne room for hours, my head bowed, my hands chained behind my back. The air was thick with the scent of old blood and candle wax. Shadows danced across the walls like living things, twisting and writhing in the dim torchlight.
I was a Dhampir. Half-vampire. Half-human. Hated by both worlds. A slave with no home, no family, no hope.
And I belonged to the most dangerous vampire in existence.
Zayne Blackthorn. The Vampire King.
He sat on his throne of obsidian and bone, his cold eyes sweeping over the court with the bored arrogance of a predator who had no equals. His skin was pale as marble, his hair black as midnight, and his crimson eyes burned with ancient power. He wore a crown of black iron, and his fingers drummed against the armrest like a heartbeat.
He was beautiful. And terrifying.
I had been his slave for as long as I could remember. He had bought me from a human trader when I was a child, and I had served him ever since. He was cruel. Ruthless. He treated me like garbage. I had learned to keep my head down, to stay silent, to survive.
But tonight, something was different.
Tonight, he was looking at me.
"Bring the Dhampir forward," he commanded, his voice like silk and steel.
Two guards grabbed my arms, dragging me across the stone floor. My chains clanked against the ground, echoing through the silent hall. I stumbled, my knees scraping against the rough stone, and fell at his feet.
"Look at me," Zayne ordered.
I lifted my head, meeting his crimson gaze. My heart pounded in my chest. What did he want? What was he going to do? The court was silent, every pair of eyes fixed on me.
His lips curled into a cold smile. "You've been in my court for sixteen years. And yet, I have never tasted your blood."
I felt a chill run down my spine. "My Lord, my blood is tainted. I am half-human. It would be unworthy of you—"
"Silence." He leaned forward, his eyes gleaming. "I will decide what is worthy."
He rose from his throne and walked toward me. His footsteps echoed in the silence. He reached down, grabbing my chin with brutal strength. His claws pressed against my skin, drawing a thin line of blood.
And then he licked it.
The moment his tongue touched my wound, his entire body went rigid. His crimson eyes widened. His pupils dilated. His grip tightened, and a low growl rumbled from his chest. The court gasped, whispers spreading like wildfire.
"By the gods," he breathed. "Your blood..."
I felt terror wash over me. "My Lord, please—"
"It's addictive." His voice was barely a whisper. "I've never tasted anything like it."
He pulled me closer, his face inches from mine. "What are you, Vesper? What have you been hiding from me?"
I shook my head, tears streaming down my face. "I'm nothing. I'm just a slave. Just a worthless Dhampir—"
"You are no ordinary Dhampir." His eyes burned with obsession. "Your blood calls to me like a siren's song. It's intoxicating. Irresistible."
He pulled me into his arms, cradling me against his chest. I could feel his heart beating—fast, erratic, desperate. The court was stunned into silence. No one had ever seen the Vampire King behave this way.
"You are mine," he murmured. "You have always been mine. But now... now I will never let you go."
I didn't understand. I didn't understand any of it. But I knew one thing for certain: the Vampire King's obsession had just begun.
---
The guards dragged me back to my cell.
It was a small, damp room in the dungeons, with nothing but a straw pallet and a bucket of water. I had lived here my entire life. It was all I had ever known. The walls were cold and wet, and the only light came from a tiny window high above.
I collapsed onto the pallet, my body shaking. What had just happened? Why had Zayne reacted like that? He had tasted my blood and become obsessed. I pressed my hand to my chest, feeling my heart race.
*"Your blood calls to me like a siren's song."*
But why? I had always known I was different. Dhampirs were rare. Half-vampire, half-human. Hated by both species. But I had never thought my blood was special. Not until tonight.
I closed my eyes, trying to calm my racing thoughts. But sleep wouldn't come. All I could see was Zayne's crimson eyes, burning with obsession. His claws on my skin. His lips against my throat.
*Why me? Why now?*
I didn't have answers. I only had fear.
---
The next morning, a guard came to my cell.
"The King requests your presence," he said, his voice flat. "Immediately."
I swallowed hard. "What does he want?"
"He didn't say. Just come."
I followed the guard through the winding corridors of the Obsidian Court. The castle was massive—a labyrinth of stone and shadow, lit by flickering torches. Vampires stared at me as I passed, their cold eyes filled with disgust and curiosity. I heard their whispers.
*"The Dhampir... the King tasted her blood..."*
*"He was obsessed. I've never seen him like that."*
*"What is she?"*
I kept my head down, my heart pounding. I was used to being stared at. But this was different. This was dangerous.
The guard led me to Zayne's private chambers—a suite of rooms far more luxurious than anything I had ever seen. Silk drapes. Velvet furniture. A massive bed with black satin sheets. Candles flickered on every surface, casting dancing shadows across the walls.
And Zayne, standing by the window, his back to me. He was wearing a simple black shirt, his dark hair tousled. He looked less like a king and more like a man.
"Leave us," he commanded.
The guard bowed and left, closing the door behind him.
Zayne turned to face me. His crimson eyes swept over me, lingering on my face, my neck, my wrists. I felt exposed, vulnerable.
"Come closer," he said.
I hesitated, then stepped forward. My heart was pounding so hard I could barely breathe. He reached out, his cold fingers brushing against my cheek.
"You're afraid of me," Zayne observed.
"Yes," I admitted.
"Good." He smiled—a cold, dangerous smile. "Fear is wise. Fear keeps you alive."
He stepped closer, his face inches from mine. "I haven't been able to stop thinking about your blood," he murmured. "It haunts me. Every breath, every heartbeat—I crave it."
"My Lord—"
"Call me Zayne." His voice was soft, almost gentle. "When we're alone, call me Zayne."
I stared at him, confused. "Why?"
"Because I want to hear you say my name." He leaned in, his lips brushing against my ear. "I want to hear you whisper it when I drink from you."
I shuddered, a mix of fear and something else—something I didn't want to name. "I don't understand. You hate me. You've always hated me."
"I thought I did," he admitted. "But now... I don't know what I feel anymore."
He pulled back, his eyes searching mine. "You've been in my court for sixteen years. And I never noticed you. Not really. But the moment I tasted your blood, everything changed. Everything."
He reached for my hand, his cold fingers intertwining with mine. "I need to taste you again. I need to understand what you are."
I shook my head, pulling away. "No. Please. I'm afraid."
"Don't be afraid." He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I won't hurt you. I just need... a taste."
I hesitated. Every instinct told me to run. But I knew there was no escape. He was the Vampire King. I was his slave. If I refused, I would be punished. Maybe killed.
"Fine," I whispered. "Take what you want."
He smiled—a genuine smile that softened his cold features. He pulled me into his arms, his lips pressing against my throat. I felt his fangs graze my skin, and then... pain.
But only for a moment.
As he drank, a strange warmth spread through my body. It was intoxicating, overwhelming. I felt my knees buckle, but he held me up, his arms strong and steady. The room spun around me.
When he finally pulled away, his eyes were glowing brighter than I had ever seen.
"By the gods," he breathed. "You're more than just a Dhampir. You're something else entirely."
"I'm nothing," I whispered, my voice weak.
"No." He cupped my face, his thumb brushing away a tear. "You are Vesper. And you are mine."
