Time to get Married
Naomi POV
"Mom, I hope you haven't forgotten about my dress for the Matric Dance. I wonder what will happen to Naomi since she doesn't have a dress."
Priya spoke with a smirk on her face. Her eyes fixed on me. As I was quietly having my dinner, I lifted my head and gave Priya a cold glare.
"Should I cry? Because I don't have a dress for the matric dance?" I asked sternly. "Unfortunately, I have no tears to shed for such nonsense, because it's pointless to have a dress for the matric dance when you have low marks. I may not have a dress, but I will get a scholarship."
"Something which you won't have."
Zena's face turned red with anger. "How dare you speak to my daughter like that?" she demanded. "You have a sharp tongue. Now, don't you, don't forget that I did you a big favor by letting you live. I should have killed you long ago. You are nothing but jinxes in our lives."
I grimaced, feeling a painful tightness in my throat. I swallowed hard and replied, "Unfortunately, I didn't ask for your favor. It was your own choice to keep me. Once I have the money, I will pay you back for your debt."
My heart would ache every time my mother spoke to me like that. My mother had hated me since birth, and I faced difficult times during my childhood.
My mother would vent all her anger at me whenever she was frustrated or angry. I had grown accustomed to it and didn't care anymore. All the respect I had for my mother had died as I grew up, and saw how I was treated.
What was my fault in this that my mother would vent her anger at me all the time? I decided not to care anymore and work hard for a better future, instead of wasting my tears on people who hated me.
Zena flashed a smirk. "Now you are talking. You have finished writing your exams, right? Why don't you return the favor I did for you? That's the main reason why I let you live, after all."
"What do you want from me?" I asked.
"Get married to a guy of my choice." Zena said, "I already have someone who wants to marry you.
They are filthy rich, and want you to be their daughter-in-law." My eyes widened in disbelief, yet my brows furrowed in frustration. My shoulders dropped as I listened to the woman I called my mother.
And it felt as if time had stopped. It was difficult to comprehend why my mother wanted to marry off an 18-year-old girl. Did she hate me this much?
I couldn't understand why I was being punished for something that wasn't my fault. Why didn't my mother abort me when she discovered that she was pregnant after being r***d by my father?
"But, but I still have to finish my studies," I pleaded.
Priya sneered. "Do you think that girls like you can ever be successful?" she asked.
"No, you can't be anything. It's better to get married to a rich guy to save yourself from humiliation. Priya is right. Tomorrow, get ready to meet your future in-laws. I will inform my friends to tell them to come tomorrow.
I wanted you to study further. But now that you have insulted my daughter, I will accept their offer," Zena said.
I rose from my chair and made my way to my room. Upon arrival, I kicked the door open and entered, slamming it shut behind me. But I refused to let my tears fall.
I had made a promise to myself that I would not give my haters the satisfaction of seeing my weaknesses. I was strong and determined to face anything that came my way.
If marrying the man of my mother's choice would free me from the favor that was done to me, then I would do it. I was confident that I could continue my studies without bothering anyone.
With the advancement in technology, anyone could study from home. I had hoped that one day God would hear my prayers. I walked over to my bed and lay down.
My face turned towards the ceiling. "I'm so unlucky," I murmured with a mocking smile. "But one day I will make it in life. I will be the richest woman in this country.
I will not use anyone or anyone's money to build my empire. I will do it on my own."
The following day, I woke up early and began to tackle my chores, even making breakfast. My mother and my princess sister were still sleeping, but I didn't mind.
I knew they wouldn't have lifted a finger to help, even if they had woken up early. After finishing up my cleaning duties, I retreated to my room to take a refreshing shower. I couldn't help but feel grateful that my mother wanted me to get married after completing high school.
It would make it much easier for me to achieve my goals, such as obtaining excellent grades and applying for scholarships.
After finishing my morning routine of bathing and changing clothes, I walked over to my windows, opened them, and climbed onto my chair to let in the fresh air.
With the windows open, I jumped outside, my feet touching the ground as if it was not a great height. I then hopped onto my bike and headed to my secret job of cleaning the nearby restaurant every morning.
Starting at 06:00 a.m., to ensure I had enough time, I woke up early, around 05:00 a.m., to clean my house before leaving. It usually took me an hour to clean the restaurant.
And I would return home at 07:00 a.m. to prepare for school. By that time, my mother would have woken up, and my princess sisters would start preparing for school after I made breakfast for them.
I truly hope my sister finds a wealthy husband, or else her life will be a living hell. She doesn't know how to cook, do the dishes, or even do her own laundry. It's a shame for a lady not to know how to take care of herself.
How delightful it was to find the road empty during the early hours of the morning. I had no trouble reaching the restaurant in no time. After parking my bike in the lot, I made my way inside.
Upon entering, I greeted the manager, a distinguished gentleman in his late fifties, who was engrossed in reading the newspaper. "Good morning, Mr. King," I said.
"Morning, dear. Did you sleep well?" he asked. I nodded my head in response, feeling content with the warm welcome. "Very well, then let's get to work," he said.
I began my duties by arranging the chairs and tables in a neat and orderly fashion. Next I mopped the floor, leaving it spotless.
I then proceeded to the kitchen, where I meticulously cleaned all the utensils on the stove. After finishing up in the kitchen, I moved on to the manager's office, where I tidied up his desk and chair.
And mopped the floor. Finally, I made my way to the owner's office, where I cleaned and arranged everything to perfection. I finally went back to the restaurant where Mr. King was.
"Sir, I'm done with my work," I told him. As soon as I reached where he was seated, he raised his head. "Good job, my dear," he said. He took an envelope from the table and handed it to me.
"Your birthday is around the corner, my dear. There's a bonus of 5000. Buy something nice for yourself." My eyes twinkled with happiness as I took the envelope from him.
"Thank you so much, sir. I don't know how I should. Thank you."
"It's okay, dear. Go now before your mother finds out that you are not home," he told me.
I arrived at my home and made my way inside through the windows. After taking a refreshing shower and changing my attire, I proceeded to the dining area.
To my surprise, I noticed my mother seated with unfamiliar people. Was she truly considering arranging a marriage for me? It's difficult to fathom that a mother could take such actions towards her own daughter.
