A New World
With a thunderous crash, the entire earth trembled. A crude stone gate was shattered, and countless people surged through, brutally slaughtering the startled guards inside.
“Drop your weapons! Surrender and you will not be killed!” A burly man like a bull roared, swinging a giant hammer. With every step and every swing, he reaped lives. The terrified guards, seeing the situation was hopeless, threw down their weapons and raised their hands in surrender. However, dozens of people among the crowd still resisted, but under the siege of the countless enemy soldiers, they fell one by one. Amidst the flashing blades, a woman in white was struck down and flipped to the ground, her clothes stained red with blood.
In the encirclement, only one man remained.
“Shuang’er, don’t die! Shuang’er!” The man knelt on the ground holding the woman in white, his face full of grief, repeatedly calling the woman’s name.
“Lin Yue, prepare to die!” The burly leading soldier stepped forward, sneering at the anguished man. “This Flame City now belongs to me, Xiao Yuan!” With that, the burly man even hurled his giant hammer at Lin Yue. Lin Yue did not dodge; he threw a punch and knocked the hammer away. He suddenly raised his head, his bloodshot eyes glaring at the burly man named Xiao Yuan, and roared through gritted teeth:
“You—deserve—to die!”
Xiao Yuan was startled, panicking as he stepped back three paces. Lin Yue’s eyes were filled with terrifying killing intent. Even the formidable Xiao Yuan was too afraid to confront him head-on. He quickly waved to his men and ordered, “Surround him and kill him!”
Lin Yue gently laid down the body of the woman in white. Watching the charging enemy soldiers, he sneered to himself, “After all my painstaking efforts over ten years, I never thought I’d end up like this.”
He slowly stood up, gripped his iron sword, and in a flash, charged into the enemy ranks. Like the Grim Reaper, he reaped lives one after another. But all strength eventually wears out. Finally, Lin Yue was pierced by a spear, and then countless swords swung down, hacking his body into a b****y mess.
As his consciousness faded, the last thing Lin Yue saw was the azure sky. His lips moved as he murmured to himself, “This world… a strange world.”
Was he about to die? At that moment, memories flashed through his mind like a revolving lantern—the carefree twenty years on Earth, and the ten years of desperate struggle after being transported to this strange world. Fortunately, there was her, the only belief that kept him going in this strange and terrifying new world.
“Shuang’er, I’m coming. Let’s walk the Yellow Springs Road together…”
Did Lin Yue die?
Earth, May 15, 2015, City J, China. The gloomy weather weighed like a boulder on people’s hearts, stirring up irritation. Faint red glimmers flickered in the clouds, a peculiar sight that filled people with doubt.
“Boss, check, please!” In a supermarket, a young man pushed a shopping cart to the checkout counter.
The cashier took out the items one by one and scanned the barcodes. She noticed that most of the things in the cart were high-calorie foods like compressed biscuits and chocolate, along with bottled water and some personal items. What surprised her was that there were also lighters and small knives.
The cashier looked with interest at the young man, who was about 1.8 meters tall, and chuckled, “Young man, are you buying all this for a camping trip?”
The young man smiled and said, “Something like that. Could you please hurry? I’m in a bit of a rush!”
The cashier smiled back without speaking, skillfully scanned all the items, packed them into two large bags, and handed them to him. “That’ll be 343 yuan!”
The young man paid, then picked up the two large bags and quickly returned to his school dormitory, piling them onto his bed. By now, the bed was already covered with several large backpacks stuffed full, along with some items in handbags. His entire bunk was filled with all kinds of things.
After organizing the items, the young man slumped to the floor and couldn’t help sighing. “I didn’t expect that even after rebirth, I’d still have to face such a great calamity.”
This young man was Lin Yue. He had thought he was dead, but after his consciousness faded to the extreme, it recovered. When he woke up, he found himself not in that other world, but ten years earlier, on Earth before the Great Crossing had even happened.
What was the Great Crossing? As the name suggests, it was a massive crossing event—so massive that all 7 billion people on Earth were transported. For unknown reasons, everyone was sent to a strange world. This world was very similar to Earth, both in climate and biology. The atmospheric concentration was basically the same, perfectly suitable for human survival. The only difference was that gravity was about 90% of Earth’s.
All 7 billion people arrived in this new world. Civilization was stripped away, and all technological achievements were lost. People engaged in brutal survival struggles against wild beasts and each other in the wilderness. Many died of starvation or were killed, while many others succumbed to various new viruses.
Through the balcony, Lin Yue looked at the sky. The red glimmers in the clouds were very conspicuous. Although he had been reborn from ten years later, he still didn’t know the cause of the Great Crossing, but he knew the disaster would still happen. The red glimmers in the clouds were the omen. They had appeared for three days, and although people on Earth had noticed, they didn’t know what they meant.
After his rebirth, Lin Yue wanted to change things, but he had very little time—only one day. Even if he told the government with just one day to go, it would be useless, because he didn’t know the cause of the Great Crossing, and simply telling them wouldn’t be convincing. Since he couldn’t change it, he decided to prepare. The pile of things on his bed was his entire savings spent on supplies.
Lin Yue was an orphan, so he didn’t have to worry about his parents’ safety after the disaster. As for old classmates and friends who lived far away, he could only send them text messages saying a great disaster was coming and they should prepare. Whether they believed him or not was beyond his control.
There was one person, however, that Lin Yue couldn’t stop worrying about: Liu Yunshuang, his lover from his past life. Lin Yue was very concerned about her safety after crossing to the new world. But in his previous life, he had met her only after surviving in the new world for more than half a year, so he couldn’t contact her now. Since she survived in his previous life, she should be able to survive this time as well.
“Wait for me, Shuang’er!”
What Lin Yue needed to do now was to quickly protect his friends and classmates around him, because after the disaster, even if they were transported to the new world, they would still be near him, and they could unite as a force. However, he knew he could only save a few people; the more people, the more variables. After ten years, there weren’t many friends at school he truly cared about.
When there were only twenty minutes left before the Great Crossing, Lin Yue’s three roommates returned, along with three other classmates with whom he had a good relationship.
After they arrived, Lin Yue had each of them put on a backpack and carry a handbag, then briefly explained what was about to happen.
He had only said a few words when one of the girls, named Yang Qing, looked at him as if he were crazy. “Lin Yue, are you okay? Have you been reading too many online novels?”
Besides Yang Qing, there was one other girl among the six. Having the two girls come to the boys’ dormitory had already made them reluctant, and now Lin Yue was cracking such a ridiculous joke.
Facing the questioning looks from Yang Qing and the others, Lin Yue didn’t explain too much. Such a thing was too bizarre, and no amount of explanation would convince anyone.
“It’s now 4:55 PM. There are only five minutes until the disaster. Whether you believe me or just want to see me make a fool of yourselves, can you wait five more minutes?”
The others smiled helplessly. One of Lin Yue’s roommates, named Zheng Hai, patted his shoulder and said, “Old Lin, it seems the exam pressure has really gotten to you. Fine, we’ll humor you for five minutes. But I’m telling you, if your so-called disaster doesn’t happen in five minutes, we won’t have time to keep joking around.”
Although his friends thought what Lin Yue said was too absurd, perhaps influenced by the strange red glimmers in the sky, deep down they felt a trace of doubt: could Lin Yue be telling the truth?
Lin Yue smiled and said, “Good. When it happens, everyone stick close to me. I’ll take you to a safe place first!”
By now, his friends had treated his words as a joke and weren’t really listening. They just smiled noncommittally.
Lin Yue didn’t say anything else. He quietly looked at the time on his phone. In his previous life, after the Great Crossing, he clearly remembered the time on his phone was 5:00:35. The 35 seconds might have been due to his daze after crossing, so the crossing likely happened exactly at 5:00.
Sure enough, just as the time approached 5:00, the sky suddenly churned with wind and clouds. The red glimmers flashed, then exploded into intense red light that enveloped the entire Earth. In an instant, the surroundings changed. In the blink of an eye, the beds and desks disappeared, replaced by dense forest.
Zheng Hai and the others had been laughing about Lin Yue’s foolishness, but the sudden change stunned them. This supernatural phenomenon unfolded right before their eyes.
The Great Crossing had really happened!
