14 Ignacio Vargas stopped in front of Herrera and raised the large serrated edge knife. The sun glinted off the blade. “You have found the gringos, no?” he said hopefully. “They are not here.” “No?” “They have escaped.” “Hijole!” Vargas cursed. “Escaped? Escaped where? I did not see them leave the house.” “There ees a tunnel,” Herrera said. “They escaped in a tunnel.” “A tunnel? Where ees this tunnel?” “Come! Andale! We weel find it.” Herrera turned and re-entered the house. Vargas followed closely behind. His weapon raised and ready, Herrera flung open the wardrobe door. The robe was empty.
