Chapter 5

1101 Words
Saturday came and Astrid got ready for the promised date. She had pushed her worries down for now. She'd confront him, but she just hadn't figured out what to say yet. “Hey, are you cheating on me?” just sounded too accusing. She'd find a way to talk to him about it. Until then, she wouldn't be physical with him and she wouldn't promise to be his. He picked her up right on time with another bouquet of flowers. She smiled and took them from him. “Thank you, let me put these in water.” He followed her to the kitchen and looked around. “I've actually never been in a house that wasn't the packhouse. It's small, but so cozy in here.” “It's not really small. There's more than enough space for us,” she answered. “Maybe for you, but I'm just not used to things this small. I mean, your kitchen is less than half the size of the packhouse kitchen. You could've lived there you know.” “Oh I know, but father chose to live in his own house. He likes the privacy and so does mother. I'm ready to go now.” “Good, I'm excited. Let's go.” The restaurant was a magnificent place. Ivory pillars at the front entrance, crystal chandeliers, marble floors and silk table cloths. “Trent, wow...” she gasped. “It's beautiful...” “Not nearly as beautiful as you deserve,” he said and took her hand. He brought it to his lips and kissed it. “Come, let's get seated.” They followed the hostess to a table in a more private section of the restaurant. Trent ordered rounds of courses of them. All the food was exquisite. He couldn't pull off getting wine here, though. “You seem thoughtful, not nearly as bubbly as usual. Is something wrong?” he asked. She sighed and looked down at her plate. “There is something on my mind, but I don't want to ruin dinner with it.” “It won't ruin dinner.” He placed his hand on hers. “Talk to me, please?” “Alright. When Violet attacked me and we were in front of the Alpha, your father, why didn't you stick up for me?” “I was just shocked, is all. I should've, but I was frozen. I didn't think Vi could hurt anyone. Especially unprovoked. That's just not like her.” “Vi?” “Everyone calls her that,” he dismissed. “She said that you are still sleeping with her.” He blanched at that. “I haven't slept with her in like... a year.” She sighed with relief. “You didn't break up with her for me?” “No. I broke up with her because she's high maintenance, a b***h and she was after title of Luna. She didn't care about me at all.” “Maybe that explains why she's so angry with me...” Astrid realized. “It's not a jaded lover thing, it's a stolen title.” “You can't steal a title she never had. I made it very clear that my Luna would be my mate.” “Thank you for clearing that up.” “Next time, come to me sooner. Don't wrestle with this kind of thing on your own. You have a mate now, you'll never have to go through anything alone again.” Her heart swelled and she felt like she could accept him now. The way he looked at her, like she hung the moon. How could she doubt that he was faithful to her? “I'm glad that's cleared up, because I have a surprise for you.” “Oh?” He pulled something out of his pocket and got up. He crossed to her side of the table and got down on one knee. “This might be too soon, and I'm okay with you saying so. That's why I got us a private table. Astrid, you are the most surprising mate and I couldn't be more proud that you're my mate. Will you marry me? I don't know how much longer I can go without you officially mine.” Tears fell down her cheeks. She wanted to scream a yes, but was it too soon? “Stop thinking so logically, just feel for once!” Ayna said inside her head. “He's our mate! His wolf is beside himself for us. I'm sure Trent is too.” She nodded and then said “yes,” in a tiny voice. “Yes I'll marry you,” she repeated, stronger this time. He jumped up and hugged her. He pulled her to her feet and put the ring on her finger. He pulled her close and swayed in a sort of dance. “Thank you, Astrid.” On the way home he couldn't stop smiling. It made Astrid's heart happy. “Can we stop at the packhouse? I want to announce to my family. Maybe call yours so they can meet us there?” “Good idea!” She texted her mother, afraid her voice would betray her if she called. Her parents promised to meet them there. Trent pulled up right to the front of the packhouse, proper parking be damned. He ran around the car, opened the door and pulled her out. “Come on, come on!” They ran up the steps, hand in hand, laughing. Trent pushed the door open and yelled for his parents. His brother and sister came out of their rooms and stared at them. “What are you up to now?” his brother rolled his eyes. His parents finally showed themselves right when Astrid's parents came in the front door. Trent lifted up her left hand so all could see the sparkling diamond on her finger. It was a rather large diamond with smaller diamonds on the band. “We're getting married!” Astrid's mother hugged her and her father shook Trent's hand. Trent's parents hugged them both and his mother had tears in her eyes. “My son, engaged! My first baby. I can't believe it.” “Moooom, I'm not a baby. I'll be almost 20 by the time we actually get married.” “I know, but you'll always be my baby.” “Astrid, let's go for a walk. I'm not ready to bring you home yet,” Trent said. He took her hand led her outside. They walked the packhouse grounds. Both of them on cloud 9.
