Trent seemed to be serious about her challenge. He had flowers sent to her house and tonight he had a big surprise date planned. She'd heard whispers of very disappointed women he'd broke things off with. She still had a hard time with his womanizer status, but maybe he really would put it in the past. Only time would tell.
He picked her up at 7pm sharp with a bouquet of roses. She wore a little black dress with red heels. Her dark hair was curled, but loose around her shoulders. It fell to the small of her back.
He looked stunned when she opened the door. He was used to seeing her around in casual wear or at the training center. Messy bun, sportswear and sweaty. Tonight though, she looked like the picture of elegance and class. Red lipstick and all.
“You look... you look fantastic,” he said.
“There's more to me than just competing at the training grounds,” she winked.
He let out a low growl. “Be careful or I'll lose control of my wolf.”
“I think you're strong enough to stay in control,” she teased.
He took her to a fairly fancy restaurant on the edge of town. It was out far enough that there were more regular people than their kind. She wondered for a fleeting moment if this was to prevent anyone from seeing them together. She pushed the negative thought out of her mind. Here he was driving her to a beautiful place, doing everything right and she was picking it apart. She felt guilty for it.
“Order anything you'd like. I'm going to get us a bottle of wine.”
“Trent, we're not old enough for wine. They won't let you.”
It was his turn to wink. “Trust me.”
He ordered the wine and the waiter didn't even blink an eye. They each ordered steaks with a side of steamed vegetables and loaded baked potato.
“How did you do that?” she asked.
“What? The wine?” He leaned in closer and glanced around. “My uncle owns this place. I asked ahead of time if I could treat my date.”
She felt even guiltier for questioning his motives now. She reached across the table and held his hand. “Thank you for bringing me here.”
“The pleasure is mine. Really. I mean, look at you. You're the most beautiful woman in our entire pack and you're here with me.”
“Me? The most beautiful? That must be the mate bond talking.” She laughed uncomfortably and sipped her wine.
“No, really. I mean it. I don't know how I never really noticed you before. Just in passing I guess. You're seriously gorgeous and I'm sure your personality will match the outside.”
She blushed deeply. She wasn't used to getting compliments. She didn't think she was ugly, just nothing special. She looked like a normal 18 year old girl. She was blessed with clear skin and her hair was thick and long, one of the things she was proud of. Training had built muscle and created more curves than her genetics had blessed her with. But she was short. Shorter than any other girl in the pack and quite petite. So much so her parents had worried she wouldn't have a wolf at one point, but she'd filled out some easing their worry. She was just... small. She figured that was why her shift had been so much more painful.
“What are you thinking about? Did I upset you?” he asked, a concerned look on his face.
“No, no. I was just zoning out I guess. I'm sorry.”
He smiled again. “Don't worry about it. So I talked to the trainer the other day. He is quite impressed by you. You were undefeated for months straight before you graduated. He said you started out really rough, lots of injuries and lost fights, but you came out on top in a big way. I'm impressed.”
She looked down at her plate and pushed her food around with her fork. “Yeah, I guess I did. I didn't know he was bragging about me.”
“Oh he was. For good reason. You'd make a perfect Luna, Astrid. You're beautiful, smart, strong, you can fight. I'm proud to be mated to you.”
“Really? Even after dating so many women?”
“Especially after dating so many women. No one ever did it for me. Not until I found you. I haven't even really touched you, but I know you're all I want for the rest of my life.”
Her heart beat faster. She studied his handsome face. No wonder the girls flocked to him. He was tall, blond with clear blue eyes. He had broad shoulders and a muscled physique. She could forgive his dating history, she decided. She'd probably have had boyfriends if handsome men were throwing themselves at her.
When he dropped her off at home he walked her to her front door. He tucked her hair behind her ear sending electric shivers down her body. He tilted her chin up so he was looking down at her. He leaned down and kissed her gently and then more passionately. His hand traveled to the small of her back and he pulled her closer. Pressed against him, her heart went wild and her wolf howled in her head. She was sure his was doing the same. All too soon, he broke away. “That's enough for tonight,” he said. He touched her nose with his finger tip and walked back to his car. She went inside and sat on the floor.
“Astrid, you're back. How was it?” her mother asked.
“Everything. Just everything,” she said softly.
Her mother chuckled and went to her room for the night.
Astrid finally went upstairs and crawled into bed. She hoped she'd dream of him tonight.
