Chapter One — Collapse
You promised us this wouldn’t happen. Mara Vance looked up sharply as the file slammed onto the conference table. The sound echoed through the glass boardroom. Outside, Manhattan drowned beneath cold rain and flashing traffic lights. Inside, twelve people sat around a million-dollar table looking at her like she had personally set the company on fire. Maybe she had. I said we were working on a solution, Mara replied tightly. That’s not what you said. Mr. Holloway leaned forward, his face red with anger. You told us the investors were staying. They were. Then where the hell did forty million dollars go overnight? The room exploded. Voices crashed into each other. This company is dying. We should’ve sold last year. The press is already talking. Our stocks are dropping by the hour. Mara closed the file in front of her before she ripped the pages apart. Enough. Nobody stopped. Her pulse pounded harder. For weeks she had barely slept. For months she had been fixing problems her father left behind before he died. Every day was another meeting. Another debt. Another threat. And somehow it was never enough. Richard, the financial director, rubbed a hand over his face. Mara… No. She stood abruptly. I’m speaking now. The room finally quieted. Not out of respect. Out of curiosity. Waiting to see if she would break. Mara planted both hands on the table. You think I don’t understand how serious this is? Do you? someone shot back. Her jaw clenched. We are losing money every day, another board member said. The banks are nervous. Investors are disappearing. Staff are already talking about layoffs. That won’t happen, Mara said immediately. You can’t guarantee that. Yes, I can. You can’t even guarantee this company survives the month. That one landed. Hard. Mara felt it in her chest. But she refused to let them see it. You’re panicking, she said coldly. We’re being realistic. And I’m trying to save this company. Mr. Holloway laughed under his breath. You’re twenty-seven years old trying to run an empire that’s already collapsing. The insult burned more than she expected. Not because it hurt. Because she had heard it too many times before. Too young. Too emotional. Too soft. Never good enough. Mara straightened slowly. If any of you think you can do better, say it clearly. Silence. Nobody looked away from her. But nobody answered either. Cowards. Her phone buzzed against the table. Mom. Mara ignored it. You should consider stepping down temporarily,” one woman suggested carefully. “At least until things stabilize. A bitter laugh almost escaped Mara. Step down? From the company her family built? After killing herself trying to keep it alive? Absolutely not. Her phone buzzed again. Then again. Mara, Richard said quietly, maybe you should answer that. She grabbed the phone roughly. What? Mara? Her mother’s voice came softer this time. Are you okay? No. The honesty surprised both of them. Lucille sighed gently. Breathe first. Mara looked around the room. Twelve people watching her. Judging her. Waiting. I’ll call you back. She hung up before her mother could answer. Then she looked at the board members one last time. If you’re all done predicting my failure, she said calmly, I have work to do. Mara… She walked out before anyone could stop her. The hallway felt colder than the meeting room. Her heels struck hard against the marble floors as assistants scattered out of her path. Someone called her name. She ignored them. By the time she reached her office, her chest was tight with anger. She slammed the door behind her. Silence. Finally. Mara dropped into her chair and pressed both hands against her face. For one second… Just one… She let herself feel it. Fear. Real fear. Not for herself. For the company. For the employees. For her family name. Everything was slipping through her fingers and she didn’t know how to stop it anymore. Her phone rang again. Mom. This time Mara answered quietly. What? You sound exhausted. I am exhausted. Lucille was silent for a moment. You’ve been carrying this company on your back for too long. What choice do I have? You’re allowed to fall apart sometimes. Mara laughed weakly. That’s funny. I’m serious. She leaned back slowly in her chair, staring at the city outside her office windows. Rain blurred the skyline. I just… Mara swallowed hard. I thought by now things would be easier. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Lucille’s voice softened. “Do you remember senior year?” Mara frowned slightly. What? You. Her mother chuckled quietly. Always rushing out of the house like the world belonged to you. Despite herself, Mara smiled faintly. Back then everything had been easy. She had been beautiful. Popular. Untouchable. The girl everyone wanted to be around. No debt. No pressure. No collapsing company. No fear. Sometimes it felt like that girl belonged to someone else entirely. You used to smile more, Lucille said gently. Mara stared at her reflection in the dark office windows. I didn’t know life could change this much. Before her mother could answer, someone knocked sharply on her office door. Mara frowned. It’s open. Her assistant stepped inside looking pale. Very pale. Mara… Something in her voice made Mara sit up immediately. What happened? The assistant swallowed. There’s a man here to see you. Mara rubbed her temple tiredly. Tell him to schedule an appointment like everyone else. He says he already owns the appointment. What? The assistant stepped aside slowly. And Mara’s breath caught. A tall man walked into the office wearing a black coat still damp from the rain. Calm. Sharp. Terrifyingly composed. He looked directly at her like he already knew exactly who she was. Then he smiled. And somehow… That smile felt like bad news.
