Then a new girl, confident and open, shows up at school. Emma can’t help but be drawn to her. But the more she tries to hide her feelings, the harder it gets.

CHAPTER 1 : New Girl, New Feelings
Emma sat at her usual spot by the window in the school cafeteria, tracing circles on the table with her finger. The noise of chatting students felt distant today, like she was watching everything happen through a fog. She wasn’t in the mood to talk or laugh or join any group. Just another normal day in a small town where everyone seemed to know your business before you even said a word. That’s when she saw her. The new girl walked in with a bright smile and a confident step, like she owned the room already. Emma’s breath caught. The girl had dark, wavy hair that bounced with each step and eyes that seemed to laugh even before she said a word. Emma looked away quickly. Don’t stare, she told herself. But it was too late. The new girl caught her glance and smiled right back. Emma felt her cheeks burn. Over the next few days, the new girl, Riley, as Emma learned, seemed to be everywhere. In the hallways, in classes, even at the little coffee shop Emma sometimes visited after school. Riley was easy to spot. She laughed loudly, joked with teachers, and wasn’t afraid to be different. Emma, on the other hand, stayed quiet and small, like she always did. One afternoon, Emma was sitting alone on a bench outside school when Riley plopped down next to her without asking. “Hey,” Riley said, flashing that fearless smile. Emma blinked. “Oh, hey.” “You new here too?” Emma asked, trying to sound casual. Riley laughed. “No, I’m just new to this town. But yeah, I’m kind of new to this whole school thing.” Emma smiled a little. “It’s… different here.” “Small towns are weird like that,” Riley said. “People talk. A lot.” Emma nodded, suddenly grateful she wasn’t the only one who felt like an outsider. They sat in silence for a moment. Emma wasn’t sure what to say, but she wanted to keep talking, wanted to know more about Riley. “So,” Riley said, “what’s your story?” Emma shrugged. “Not much of a story. I keep to myself mostly.” Riley’s eyes didn’t judge. “That’s okay. I get it.” Emma found herself relaxing a little. Maybe this new girl wouldn’t make things harder. Over the next week, Emma caught herself watching Riley more than she wanted to admit. The way she tossed her hair, the way she smiled at friends, the way she wasn’t afraid to be herself. It made Emma feel… something new. Confusing, warm, and kind of scary all at once. One afternoon, Riley waved at Emma from across the hallway. “Come sit with us at lunch!” Riley called out. Emma hesitated. The idea of sitting with a group felt terrifying. But then Riley’s grin was so genuine, so inviting, Emma felt a flicker of courage. She nodded. That lunch was the first time Emma felt like she belonged somewhere. The group was loud and messy and kind of crazy, but they didn’t make fun of her or expect anything from her. And Riley… Riley kept catching her eye and smiling like she knew a secret Emma hadn’t figured out yet. As the bell rang, Emma’s heart was still pounding. She wondered if this was the start of something different. At home, Emma sat on her bed staring at her phone. She thought about Riley, the way her laugh had sounded, the way her hand brushed Emma’s accidentally when they reached for the same book in the library. Emma’s chest tightened. She pushed the feeling down, telling herself it was just a silly crush. But the truth was, it felt like so much more. She wasn’t sure what to do with that feeling. She wasn’t even sure what it was yet. But one thing was clear, her quiet, invisible life was starting to change.
