1. Never on time
Monday, first day of the week, Beca's favorite by far.
Hearing the hellish sound of an alarm clock going off in the bedroom next toher, the small brunette hugged her pillow tight embracing herself for what wasabout to come,
"BECA, YOU'RE GONNA BE LATE AGAIN." Caren, her mom, yelled frombehind her door.
Groaning, she threw her pillow away. "I've been in the same school for 3 yearsthey're not gonna be surprised if I’m late." Beca said to herself not havingenough energy to scream at her mother, or move.
Beca Mitchell has been living alone with her mother for half of her life now, maybe more. Caren occupied herself on taking care of Beca, her only daughter.Today was Beca’s first last day of high school, and yeah, she was already late.
High standards.
The tiny brunette swung her legs over her bed trying to push away the sleep ina vain attempt. "REBECCA." Her mom yelled again.
"Mom can you cHILL?!” Now was Beca's turn to yell.
She quickly changed into a black tank top and her blue flannel with black skinnyjeans and ran downstairs as fast as she could. "See? I’m here." She walkedpast her mother to the kitchen so she could grab something to eat. Her motherlooked at her in awe.
"Light eyeliner we have there." She said earning an eye roll from her daughter.
Beca took her things and got into her best friend's car.
"What's up Stace." She said sitting on the passenger seat.
Stacie, her best friend had her make up perfectly done. If she had to be honest,Beca kind of respected her best friend for being able to pull that so early.
"You have to appreciate this. I woke up 30 minutes earlier to pick you up." Thetaller brunette said fixing her nails.
Rolling her eyes she replied. "And you still love me." she said with her signaturesmirk. "Whatever you say, let's go."They spent the ride talking about their schedules and their summers, whichwasn't much since they've seen each other almost every day. Stacie pulled hercar in one of the parking lots and, together, they made their way to their last firstday of school.
"Spanish at first, what about you?" Stacie asked passing through the crowd ofstudents.
Squinting her eyes to have a better read of her paper, Beca looked for her firstclass. "Hum... Fuck." The tiny brunette swore.
"Chemistry?" Stacie asked with a smile.
"Chemistry." Beca confirmed. Stacie couldn't hold her laugh knowing how muchher best friend hated that subject. Beca slapped her arm playfully, "Asshole."she said.
The bell rang twice, meaning school had officially started. This meant, Beca hadtwo painful hours of Chemistry with Mr. Thompson and, as usual, appeared lateto class just in time to cut the professor.
"What a surprise, Mitchell is late." He said frustrated. "Again." He said throughgritted teeth. Beca felt the whole classroom looking at her. The man nodded insign that she should sit, so she did.
The man gave his speech. The speech every teacher says when classesbegins.
"Mitchell, I don't like your attitude. You're a pain in the ass." The male brunettenext to her said copying the older man.
"Benji, I don't know if you're imitating Thompson or Posen." Beca whisperedwith a small smile.
"Thompson you idiot." Benji chuckled.
Since it was the first class of the year, senior year, it was obvious they weren'tgoing to do much in class. They both spent the lesson catching up, talkingabout their summer and stuff. Beca had known Benji since middle school, theyweren't that close, but they were both pretty close to Jesse so you could sayBeca and Benji they were pretty good friends.
The day ended fast for Beca, she had four classes. Technology, her favorite, was the last one so it went by faster than what she thought.
"I’m auditioning for the Bellas." her best friend's words made Beca jump.
Taking her earbuds out, she looked at Stacie with a concerned expression.
"First of all, you scared the s**t out of me. Second of all, what the hell?" Becasaid pressing the pause button to stop the music."I think it'll be fun." Beca raised her eyebrow in response. "Becs c'mon. It can'tbe that bad." Beca raised her eyebrow again with a serious face this time.
"Stacie we are the ones who make fun of them.” Beca said. “Plus Posen is thereso no, no fun at all."
"So?" Stacie shrugged making Beca's jaw drop.
"Dude you serious? Posen hates us.” Stacie crossed her arms over her chestwith a smile. “She hates me, therefore she hates you too."
The taller brunette acted thoughtful for a second. "I’m auditioning anyways;Aubrey has this new girl as co-captain helping her with the Bellas. She seemsnice."
"Okay, audition. Just don't expect me to show up for auditions." Beca saidwalking to the bus stop taking Stacie's opportunity to answer.
Beca walked away from Stacie and straight to the bus stop. Placing herheadphones over her head, she played one of her new mixes waiting for thebus, which luckily was right around the corner.
"Hey.” Beca told the guy who was driving the bus. After she paid, she sat downat the back of the bus.
Watching the houses pass by, she moved her fingers to the beat. She was solost in her music that she didn't notice the young girl standing next to her seatuntil she saw a pair of feet next to hers.
"Sorry, what?" Beca said moving her headphones when she saw the red head'smouth moving.
"Mind if I sit with you?" The red head repeated. Beca shook her head with aweird expression on her face and moved so the girl could pass. Who askspermission to seat in a public bus?
Not 2 minutes had passed when Beca was forced to move her headphonesagain. "Hum, I’m not deaf however I have the music pretty loud and a big asspair of headphones that I’m starting to think you haven't seen yet." Beca said tothe redhead next to her who’s tried to talk to her.
The redhead blushed slightly making the grumpy brunette a feeling of guilt forbeing so harsh to her. "What were you saying?"
Being caught off guard, the woman gently smiled. "That I think I saw you at mychemistry class."
"Is that some type of flirt?" Beca said with a chuckle cutting the redhead wholaughed. This was usual in Beca, she was a flirt. Not a f**k girl flirt but an uncomfortableawkward flirt, basically, she used sarcasm and a glint of flirt to avoid beingawkward.
"If that makes you happy" She answered raising her eyebrows. Now was Beca’sturn to blush, and the girl noticed it. "Anyways... I thought you could show methe school and the clubs" The redhead said looking down at her hands.
"The clubs? As in chess club? Soccer team? Mathatletes?" Beca asked.
The girl nodded her head yes a few times before saying "Even though I thinkmathatletes would be fun I’m pretty sure that's from Mean Girls." The redheadpointed.
"Okay you got me." Beca said raising her hands in surrender. "I'll never let thatboy show me a movie ever again." Beca muttered to herself.
The redhead frowned but didn't ask.
They stayed in an uncomfortable silence for a minute or so that was driving thebrunette insane. "I’m Chloe, by the way." the redhead broke the silenceextending her hand.
"Someone is polite." Beca said with a chuckle, earning an eye roll from Chloe. "Beca." She answered gently squeezing her hand.
"As in Rebecca?" Chloe asked.
"No, as in Pedro." she replied sarcastically causing the redhead to laugh.
"Okay sorry, I'm slow." Chloe said.
"Doubt it. If you're slow what am I?" This caused Chloe to frown.
"You just met me how're you so sure I'm not stupid?" Chloe asked.
"Because you don't f*****g look like it." Beca said like if it was obvious. "Besides, only the nerds greet people with a handshake."
"Ouch that hurts." Chloe said jokingly. "Anyways, are you looking forward anyclub?" Beca shook her head.
"My best friend, Stace, she’s great and you’ll probably know her by tomorrow-“
“You’ll introduce her?” Chloe interrupted.
Beca shook her head with a laugh. “Nah, she’s known for doing…” Taking in thegirl’s expression and the fact that she was about to call her best friend a slut tosomeone who hasn’t met her yet gave her the hint to not open her big mouth. “…stuff. Anyways, she wants to audition to the Bellas and she wants me in thatgroup as well but I'm not into aca-lame stuff."
Before Chloe could say a word Beca started to look for her bag. "Next stop is mine. See you tomorrow."
Picking her black backpack up from the seat and her headphones, she stood by thedoor and waited until the bus completely stopped so she could leave.
As she walked down the streets she thought about her recent interaction. It wasweird. She's never been so comfortable talking to somebody, especially whenshe met that person less than an hour ago. Usually she would've ignored thatperson.
Beca was opening her front door when her phone buzzed.
From: StaceAuditions. Tomorrow after school at 4PM. See you there asshole ;)
Yup. Beca was totally not going to audition.
"I’m home." she said to nobody when she entered her house. She found a noteon the fridge from her mom.
"Went to pick some stuff to grandma's house, I’ll be back around 8pm. Loveyou shorty.Mom"
Beca's lived with her mom since she was 9. She had a good relationshipwith her. They usually hung out or ate watching The Bachelorette on hermother's bed. They loved each other. But her dad... Has she ever had a dad? She remembers him as the reasonwhy she never felt good in her old house since there were always shoutsand fist slamming desk or walls. She had to find something that distractedher when she was home.
"I guess I have time for myself then." she grabbed her laptop from her bedand took it to the living room. She typed and clicked a few times and herfriend's face appeared in the screen.
"Good Afternoon my lady." Jesse said in a fancy tone.
"What's up, dork." Beca said imitating Jesse's tone.
"It doesn't work if you're not ladylike. May I know the reason why Mrs.Mitchell called me in this beautiful afternoon?" Jesse asked playing along.
Beca rolled her eyes and said "Would you like to play Call of Duty Black ops2 with moi?"
Her friend gasped. "Oh my god, that's not a game for a lady."
"Jesus Christ Jesse stop being so fancy and help me to kick zombiesasses." Beca whinned.
The boy laughed shaking his head.
They played for hours, talking about their first day and their schedules. They've had this big brother-sister relationship since they were 5. Some people thought they were a couple, it’s not like they didn’t joke about with being a couple just to make their friends angry and they were kind of flirty to each other but nothing ever happened, not yet at least.
"s**t” Beca said gripping the joystick. “Jesse, shoot. Jesse, shoot.JessMOTHERFUCKER NOT TO ME. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" Becayelled at Jesse for shooting at her.
He couldn't stop laughing.
"aRE YOU STUPID OR DO YOU CHEW WATER?" Beca said angry.
"Dude Chill or you'll never get taller."
Beca turned her head to see her mom standing in the door frame with somebags and two cages. "That makes no sense, you know." Beca said smilingat her mother.
"Hi Caren." Jesse said.
"Where's this kid?" Caren asked looking around the room.
"In my laptop. It’s called Skype, granny." The brunette girl said dying ofembarrassment.
Caren playfully slapped her daughter in the back of the head. "Oh shut up, Ibet I can beat your ass in that game that I don't know how to play."
"That’s not hard, Beca's a loser." Jesse said sticking out his tongue.
"Oh my god, you're my mom, you're supposed to defend me. And Jesseyou're my friend, you don't have to help Satan." Beca said laughing. "I’mdone." She dramatically said. "Good night nerd." and with that she shut herlaptop ending the call.
"What's in there, Satan?" She said turning her attention to her mom.
"Flattered that you called me Satan, by the way." Caren said rolling her eyeslike her daughter does. "I picked some stuff of yours that was left long timeago when we were moving." Her mother said referring to the house theyshared with Beca's dad. "Be nice and take the boxes to your room, those areyours. If you wanna throw everything put them in a bag and I’ll take it out inthe morning."Beca did as her mother said and took the not so heavy boxes to her room.
She opened them and found lots of things she thought she left with her dad.In one box were some pictures of her parents with her or Beca as a child, there was one with her friends. There were some books, an old sweater andmaps. She knew those maps very well.
Thing was, she used to buy white maps of every continent and fill them in with the capital of each city or fun facts about them when her parents started to fight, it helped her to getdistracted. Doing them and memorizing every capital of every country in the world.
She smiled as she named every country by heart. Beca put that box under her bed and opened the other one.
And guess what, she used to have a turtle.
