The Struggles of Waiting
This narrative revolves around Allen and Diana, who were classmates during their high school years. Since then, they have developed a close and intimate friendship. Residing in the same hometown, they frequently interact with one another. They enjoy spending time together by engaging in activities such as going to the river with their friends and embarking on bushwalking adventures.
One Sunday morning, Allen and Diana attended a church service together. Subsequently, they proceeded to a local park situated in the heart of their town after having lunch at a cafeteria. During their time together, they engaged in a serious conversation. Allen had been patiently awaiting Diana's affections for a duration of over three years. He had consistently been a devoted companion to her, ready to listen and offer support, akin to a loyal puppy. Diana continued to welcome Allen into her life, whether it be at her home or when spending time with her friends. Allen firmly believed that Diana reciprocated his commitment. In a frail voice, Diana expressed, 'In the future, I may have the opportunity to repay all the sacrifices you have made for me.'
Allen often found himself growing weary and disheartened from waiting for Diana's love. However, whenever he caught a glimpse of her sweet smile, all feelings of weariness dissipated. Diana, a college student studying Caregiving, pursued her studies while Allen worked in the construction industry. They were not only classmates during high school but have been friends since then. It was only after high school that Allen found the courage to express his love for Diana.
Both Allen and Diana arose from underprivileged families and confronted myriad challenges to earn a livelihood. Education held significant importance for them as it served as a pathway to a brighter future. Diana worked alongside her aunt to financially support her education, while Allen toiled diligently to provide for his family as the eldest son with numerous siblings. Unfortunately, his father had passed away some time ago, leaving his mother without a stable job, thus rendering their earnings insufficient to provide for the family's needs.
During Diana's collegiate years, Allen would dutifully provide her transportation to school and patiently wait for her until her classes concluded. Following Diana's completion of college, Allen once again expressed his affection for her, yearning for her to finally consider his love. He candidly asked Diana, 'Do you love me, Diana?' Diana averted her gaze as he gently cupped her chin and responded slowly, 'Allen, I apologize if I cannot say it at this moment. Several issues are weighing heavily on my mind as I contemplate my future, because...'
"Is it because of my limited financial status that you believe our future together will be bleak?" Allen responded, his voice filled with emotion. Diana hesitated for a moment before providing her response, "I am sorry. I still have personal goals and dreams that I must fulfill. Entering into a romantic relationship is not my main priority at this time."
Allen's heart sank upon hearing these words. He had hoped and anticipated that Diana would reciprocate his love, but it appeared that he was not deserving of her affection. The knowledge that Diana had left without a word, seeking a supposed better future in Paraiso, only deepened his pain.
When Allen's mother discovered him in his room, she consoled him and recognized the genuine commitment and sacrifices he had made for Diana. "My son, I understand the hurt you are experiencing. Perhaps you and Diana are not meant to be together. I am confident that the right woman will come into your life at the appropriate moment. It is acceptable to feel upset. It is acceptable to cry," Allen's mother uttered, gently patting his shoulder. "I am deeply wounded as well," she added.
In the calm of the night, as slumber set in, Allen found himself in an enchanting dream. Alongside him stood Diana, their presence gracing an untouched island of pristine beauty.
"Your presence," Allen declared, "brings me immeasurable joy that I wish would never diminish."
Diana, captivated by their surroundings, spoke of the island as an idyllic sanctuary for rejuvenation.
Yet, serenity was fleeting. A strong and unyielding gust of wind swept Diana into the sky. Allen, feeling helpless, watched from a distance, his hand outstretched in futile desperation. His failed attempt to reach her symbolized his own perceived failure. With a cold sweat and the sensation of bleeding, Allen awoke at dawn.
