Chapter Three: Dangerous Proximity

1138 Words
Elena's second day at Kingstone Enterprises began with a flutter of nerves and an overwhelming desire to avoid eye contact with her boss at all costs. Unfortunately, fate—or perhaps Dominic’s twisted sense of irony—had other plans. “Elena, in my office. Now.” His deep voice cut through the hallway like a blade, sharp and commanding. A few interns nearby gave her sympathetic glances. Others smirked, clearly waiting for drama. She drew in a steady breath and followed him inside. The moment the door clicked shut, she was engulfed in silence... and tension. Dominic stood near the windows, one hand tucked into his pocket, the other holding a folder. He didn’t turn when he spoke. “There’s a charity gala tonight at the Blackstone Hotel. I need someone to accompany me.” She blinked. “You have an assistant for that.” “I need someone who understands the tech pitch we’re unveiling. Everyone else is tied up. That leaves you.” “You want me to... go with you?” she asked, cautiously. He turned then, finally meeting her eyes. “Is that a problem?” Yes. A massive one. But she couldn’t say that. “No,” she said tightly. “Of course not.” “Good,” he said. “I’ll have a car pick you up at six. Dress formally.” He turned back to the window, dismissing her. Elena didn’t move. She felt like she was constantly being yanked back and forth—between professionalism and attraction, fear and curiosity. Finally, she found her voice. “Is this really about business?” Dominic looked over his shoulder, lips twitching. “Does it matter?” --- Later That Evening The gown Vanessa had picked for her months ago—before their friendship crumbled—still hung in the back of her closet, untouched. Sapphire blue. Strapless. Hugs every curve like a second skin. Elena had never worn it before. It felt like a costume now, armor for an evening that would require her to hide every emotion, every secret, and every trace of the night they shared. The driver arrived exactly at six. A sleek black car with tinted windows and a man in a crisp suit who didn’t say a word. When she stepped into the lobby of the Blackstone Hotel, all eyes turned. Her heels clicked softly against the marble floor as she walked toward the ballroom, heart pounding. Just before she reached the door, a firm hand slid around her waist. “You clean up well, Miss Hart.” Elena didn’t have to turn to know it was Dominic. He was in a tuxedo, looking like a cover model for a luxury magazine. She could feel the heat of his body beside her, the weight of his gaze on her skin. “You could’ve given me a heads-up about the crowd,” she whispered. He leaned in slightly, his breath grazing her ear. “Where’s the fun in that?” They walked into the ballroom like a perfectly polished couple—at least on the outside. Inside, Elena was unraveling. The room was filled with some of the city’s most powerful names: business moguls, media elites, politicians. Flashbulbs popped. Waiters floated by with trays of champagne. Dominic never let go of her waist. They made their rounds, and Elena found herself speaking more than she expected—about Kingstone’s new tech expansion, the company’s charity efforts, the internship program. She was sharp, eloquent, controlled. But every time Dominic’s fingers tightened just slightly at her side, or his gaze lingered a second too long, her control slipped a little. --- An Unexpected Guest “Elena?” The voice made her freeze. She turned—and felt her stomach drop. Vanessa. In a crimson gown, holding a glass of wine, her eyes wide with mock surprise. “Well, well, look at you,” Vanessa said, lips curving into a smirk. “Didn’t expect to see you here. Especially not on his arm.” Elena opened her mouth, but Dominic beat her to it. “Miss Hart is my assistant tonight. Problem?” Vanessa’s eyes narrowed. “Not at all. Just shocked. Last I checked, she couldn’t afford to breathe in a place like this.” Elena’s cheeks flamed, but Dominic’s grip on her waist grew protective. “She earned her spot,” he said coldly. “Unlike some.” Vanessa laughed, a brittle sound. “Don’t get too comfortable, Elena. Not everything that glitters stays gold.” She turned and walked off, hips swaying, her warning hanging in the air like smoke. --- On the Balcony Elena stepped outside to catch her breath, heart pounding. The cold air bit into her bare shoulders, but she welcomed it. Anything to cool the heat threatening to rise inside her again. Moments later, she heard footsteps behind her. Dominic. He offered her a champagne flute. “You handled her well.” “She always had a sharp tongue,” Elena murmured, not taking the drink. He studied her. “What happened between you two?” “She drugged me,” she said flatly. “That night... at the club. It was her.” His jaw tightened. “You’re sure?” “I didn’t want to believe it. But the way she looked at me tonight—like she’s still proud of it…” Dominic stepped closer. “Why didn’t you tell me before?” “Because I didn’t think you’d care.” A long pause. Then he said, low and rough, “I care more than you know.” The air shifted. Elena turned, and suddenly they were too close. His hand rose slowly, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek. His touch lingered, tracing down her jaw. “You looked familiar to me the first time I saw you,” he murmured. “And now... I can’t stop wondering why.” Her heart stuttered. “Maybe we’ve met before.” “Maybe,” he said, though his voice sounded far from convinced. She didn’t mean to lean in. And he didn’t mean to pull her closer. But their lips met like a secret finally unleashed. The kiss was fire and ice—burning and shattering. Her fingers curled into his lapel. His hand slid around her lower back, anchoring her to him. She should’ve pulled away. But she didn’t. She didn’t want to. --- Back Inside Elena barely remembered the rest of the gala. She barely registered the cameras, the flashing lights, the whispers that followed them as they left together. Because in that kiss—however reckless—something cracked open. A connection neither of them could deny anymore. But what neither of them saw... was Vanessa, standing in the shadows, snapping a photo on her phone. And smiling.
