Chapter Two: A Past Buried in Ashes

1142 Words
Elena stood frozen, her breath caught somewhere between her lungs and throat. The man who had seen her at her most vulnerable—the stranger she’d spent one unforgettable night with—was now standing less than ten feet away in a high-rise office... as her boss. Dominic Kingstone looked entirely at ease behind the massive glass desk, his perfectly tailored suit sharp as a blade, his eyes glittering with faint amusement. Like he knew exactly what kind of panic was flooding her veins. Grace gave Elena a small, polite nudge. “You’ll be shadowing Mr. Kingstone for the next three weeks. Direct mentorship.” Elena turned to her with wide eyes. “Shadowing?” Grace lowered her voice. “He never does this. You’re lucky. Or cursed. Depends who you ask.” “Elena,” Dominic said, his voice like silk over steel, “come in.” Each step toward his office felt like walking barefoot on glass. Her heels echoed too loudly. Her palms were moist. When she reached his desk, she refused to sit until he gave a slight nod. Once Grace left and the door clicked shut behind her, Elena felt the air change. Denser. Quieter. Far too intimate. Dominic leaned back in his chair, fingers steepled under his chin. “You look well.” She sat upright, back stiff. “I didn’t know you were… you.” He tilted his head. “And yet, here we are.” Elena forced a deep breath. “Look, about that night—” “I’m not interested in discussing it,” he cut in smoothly. “We’re professionals now. Let’s keep it that way.” The control in his tone sent a chill down her spine, but part of her felt a strange relief. Maybe he truly intended to pretend it never happened. Maybe she could too. But the moment her eyes locked with his, her stomach flipped. She remembered the way he looked at her that night. How his hands had felt on her skin. How lost she had been—and how safe she had felt. “Good,” she said, faking a calm she didn’t feel. “Professional is... best.” Dominic gave her a slow, unreadable nod. “You start today. You’ll assist with investor reports and observe executive meetings. And you’ll keep your mouth shut about anything you saw... or did... outside of these walls.” Her face flamed, but she met his gaze. “I’m not here to cause problems, Mr. Kingstone.” “Good.” He smirked. “Because I hate problems.” --- Later That Day The boardroom was full of sharp suits, sharper tongues, and tension so thick Elena could taste it. She sat quietly in a corner, taking notes as instructed. Dominic stood at the head of the table, his voice calm and precise as he discussed quarterly projections. But not everyone in the room was impressed. Mr. Jacobs, an older executive with snake eyes and a permanent scowl, cleared his throat. “Some of us are concerned about your... distractions lately, Dominic.” Dominic didn’t flinch. “Do you mean the rising profits or the increased partnerships?” “I mean your personal decisions,” Jacobs said, his gaze flicking briefly toward Elena. Dominic followed it. “My personal life is irrelevant to company performance.” “Unless it becomes a liability.” Dominic’s expression didn’t change, but the air in the room dropped ten degrees. “Careful, Jacobs. You’re skating on thin ice.” Jacobs offered a tight smile. “Just looking out for the company.” Elena’s hands curled into fists in her lap. She felt like a target, a pawn in a power game she didn’t even understand yet. --- That Evening – Office Hallway “Elena,” a voice called softly. She turned to see Mason Knight—Dominic’s right-hand man and COO—approaching her with a warm smile. His dark blond hair was tousled, and his tone lacked the cold edge most of the executives carried. “Hi, Mr. Knight.” “Mason,” he corrected. “Just Mason. How’s your first day?” Elena hesitated. “Intense.” He chuckled. “That’s a gentle way to put it. Working under Dominic is like walking a tightrope over fire.” Her lips twitched. “Thanks for the visual.” His smile softened. “He’s not as heartless as he seems, you know.” She looked at him, surprised. “Really?” Mason glanced down the hallway toward Dominic’s closed office. “There’s more to him than the suits and scowls. He just doesn’t show it often. Or to many people.” Elena shifted uncomfortably. “I doubt I’ll be one of those people.” “You’d be surprised,” Mason murmured before giving her a wink and walking away. --- That Night – Elena’s Apartment The hot shower did little to scrub away the day’s emotional weight. Elena stood in front of her tiny mirror, a towel wrapped around her, eyes scanning her reflection. Why had it been him? Of all people, why had the stranger from that night been Dominic Kingstone—the man whose company she’d dreamed of working for since she was a teenager? Her mind drifted back to that moment years ago. The boy in the lake. Gasping for air. Cold. Lost. She had jumped in without thinking. Pulled him out. Held him as he cried. He had thanked her with shaking hands and tearful eyes. She never knew his name. But she never forgot his face. Could it be? She shook the thought away. No. That was impossible. Dominic was too cold. Too hard. The boy from her past had been vulnerable. Scared. Still, a small voice whispered: What if it’s him? Elena closed her eyes and swallowed hard. She couldn’t afford to think that way. She had to stay focused. Professional. Invisible. If only her heart would listen. --- Meanwhile – Dominic’s Penthouse Dominic stared at the photograph in his hand. It was old, faded, edges curled with time. A picture of him as a boy—maybe ten years old. Wet. Crying. A young girl beside him, her hair matted to her cheeks, her arm around his shoulders. He had found the photo in a sealed box months ago, one of the few fragments of his childhood that hadn’t been lost in the fire. The girl looked hauntingly familiar now. Like someone he’d just met again. Someone he had touched. Kissed. Taken. “Elena Hart,” he said aloud to the empty room. Could it really be her? He poured himself a drink, but didn’t take a sip. His past was a puzzle of broken pieces, and she might be one of them. If she was the girl who saved him... why didn’t she say so?
