TURFY TOPSY
"Oh, crap… This will kill me…,” Kayden thought, as his brownish, deep-seated eyes blinked several times to kill his boredom.
He sat there lazily, showing no interest in whatever the two ladies talked about while his brain was trying to find an opportunity to leave this lunch meeting arranged by his Mom and Riley.
He maintained his aloof looks as his eyes pierced into the space he was looking at. He hated meetings like these. Arranged marriages to maintain their wealth and status disgusts him.
He usually has a lot of alibis to escape such meetings, but today, his mom caught him off guard.
He looked around and saw how a trap was laid everywhere for him. Reporters and paparazzi were present so that they could click on an ambiguous moment or movement and that could cause a huge scandal for both families.
Kayden's radar brain was too good and hyperactive not to notice some of the reporters. He had seen them in most of the events they went to.
His mom was playing her dirty game again. Kayden sneered inwardly. He wouldn't even be surprised if, after he walks out, a reporter will ask him how the 'date' went with 'his girlfriend'.
Wasn't his mom feeling too confident in thinking that he would love or accept Riley?
His gaze darted towards Riley, a very pretty young woman with long hair and yellowish eyes, who was acting so obedient and comely before his mom.
He could tell from the looks that the girl liked him, but he was not in any way interested in the girl or what his mom was saying.
He has been a mommy's boy right from the time he was born. Maybe it was because he happened to be the only child.
He had never disobeyed his mom because she was always there to defend and stick up for him. So, it was so difficult for him to reject his mom outrightly.
So, he sat down with conflicted looks on his face, his brows creased up and face showing obvious annoyance, as the chatting of his mom and Riley progressed, leading towards dangerous turns eventually.
He glanced helplessly at his phone and chuckled inwardly at the message his assistant just sent to him on w******p. A devious, sly smile appeared on his face as he saw the wink emoji his assistant sent, followed by a reassurance that he would handle everything, so he did not need to worry but stay put.
Is not that he does not know how to go about this. After all, he wasn't just any young man. He was Kayden Hunter. The son of the most notable and respectable billionaire in Ontario. His dad had taught him how to face storms and climb mountains of difficulties just to get what he wants. Kayden could have dealt with this with his eyes shut, but the case here is different and difficult.
"Kayden, when do you plan to make your relationship official? Riley is graduating already, and she is at the right age to settle down…" Mrs. Sophia asked with a smile.
Kayden cleared his throat, throwing a knowing look towards his phone, indicating the dangerous turn of discussion. This was it. The topic was turning towards him.
"I am not sure yet, Mom. Probably when I am ready," Kayden said with a poker face.
As he answered his mom, his gaze swept past the reporter, and the other man, who was a paparazzo, stood up from their table and looked like they were waiting for any signal from his mom to click a few sensational pictures that could make up an interesting headline for their newspaper.
As Kayden saw those people approaching their table, he moved his eyes to look for what he was looking for and his eyes landed on his assistant entering the restaurant. 'Just in time…' he mused, while his eyes narrowed into slits.
His assistant walked into the restaurant draped in a navy blue business suit.
He stood up from his seat, throwing his usual devious sly smile towards his mom.
"Oh, you are here," he asked his assistant enthusiastically.
"Oh, my assistant is here to pick me up for the lunch meeting with one of our partners. I forgot to tell you, but I have a meeting now and it is very important. So, I will be leaving here for the restaurant where we fixed the meeting," he articulated to the reporter and paparazzo.
He quickly bid farewell to the ladies in an apologetic tone of voice, and he quickly went with his assistant as the door shut behind them.
"Henry, thank you for coming to my rescue," he said, patting his assistant's shoulder.
"I have always been your savior from way back, Kayden, and you will have to treat me to a nice treat," his assistant replied.
"I thought you had a better sense of the situation, considering you have been very close to me, especially as my assistant."
Without any further Ado, he said icily, "stop the car and get out, and make sure you are in the office early tomorrow." He gave him a look that spoke volumes of what would happen if he failed to do as says.
Henry's face looked pale as his boss' brown orbs hore into his. "Yes Sir." He said with his head slightly bowed.
With that, Henry scurried out of the car with no further delay.
It has been a couple of hours since Henry left him. Kayden was on his way to the hotel to unwind. He was not ready to see his mom today. So, it was better for him to stay away from the mansion. Today has not been what he had expected. It was far from what he had expected.
He had earlier dismissed his driver, telling him he would cope just fine. He needed to take a breather.
Everything was rather happening too fast. He knew he was rather cold towards his pale-looking assistant, but he couldn't help it. He needed to clear his head.
He has been working for him for years now and he understood what was at stake.
He would apologize to him later. But for now, he needs this break away from everyone.
Just then, his phone beeped, and he seethed as he saw the caller ID. He had wanted to ignore the call, but he had to pick it up as it kept coming in incessantly.
"What do you want this time?" He asked passively. He was sick and tired of Riley throwing tantrums like a child who lost her candy whenever he refused to make their relationship official.
It was something he could not help. Riley was not the only girl he was seeing. He wasn't a playboy, but he hated being committed to any lady. He just loves his mom, dad, and himself. So there was no way he would make anything official with anyone, including Riley.
"Riley, let's keep being friends with benefits. You can date any guy you want. But let's stop thinking about being committed to each other. It won't work." He said wryly.
"I know we have mad s*x. I also remember we are in the same class, but I am not ready for commitment."
"Seeing that the woman was not budging, he added, "That we have been having s*x does not make us lovers, and I wasn't thinking that would make you feel that I was committed to you. I could have s*x with any other. So, stop bothering me and stop scheming with my mom as well." He said and hung up.
He immediately missed a bump on the road and tried to maintain his balance. Before he could get his car under control, he saw a figure jump at his car, and in the next minute, the person was lying down on the floor.
He quickly got out of his car once he got it under control and walked to where the figure lay.
With each step that he took, his heart was thumping so loud in his chest that he thought it would fall out the next minute.
His mind, which was unsettled earlier, became very disarrayed, as the thought of what had just happened kept replaying in his foggy mind.
He peeped at the figure, which he now confirmed was a girl probably in her early twenties.
He instantly confirmed his fears as he saw the girl lying on the floor right before his car.
He just hit a person! Was she dead? Kayden asked while still in a frenzy. He moved closer to her and poked her skin to get a reaction from her.
He did this a few more times because she didn't move while calling her out to respond to him. He quickly turned her over and carried her into his arms.
He rushed to his car swiftly and placed her in the backseat and drove as fast as he could to the nearest hospital.
At the hospital, he was pacing up and down with hands akimbo, as he hoped and prayed that nothing happens to her.
He suddenly looked at his hands and realized that there were no blood stains. He went to the backseat of his car where he placed the girl earlier and realized that there was no trace of blood either.
That could mean just one thing. He did not hit the girl! Maybe she was frightened of seeing the car so suddenly that she had passed out.
She fainted because she was afraid of the thought of the car hitting her. That was the logical explanation for what had just happened.
He rushed back to the hospital just in time to hear the doctor giving instructions to the nurses that were with him.
As soon as the doctor saw him, he bowed and politely asked him to follow him to his office.
"Your girlfriend is stable now. She will be awake soon. She was just frightened, and that was why she fainted."
"This could happen when one is emotionally unstable or has so much going on. I don't mean to pry, but I hope your relationship is not facing any challenges?"
Kayden did not bother to answer the doctor. He just stood up, thanked him for the explanation, and left for where the girl was.
What did the doctor just call her again? His girlfriend? Asked if they were facing any challenges in their relationship?
"How will Kayden Hunter be in a relationship with such a poverty-stricken-looking girl…? He thought.
As he got to the ward where the girl was kept, he dismissed the nurses because they were stealing glances at him. He was used to this, though, but it was one of the days he wanted to entertain anyone who wanted to flirt with him.
He sat down on the chair that was beside the bed and watched as the drip was dropped slowly and he left a frustrated sigh.
Today has been topsy-turvy, and it was still far from ending, but he felt relieved that he did not kill anyone. At least that was better than what he had imagined earlier.
If he had not asked his driver to stay back, nor had he not dismissed his assistant rudely, he could have asked either of them to get him something to drink.
He needed something to cool off after all that had happened today, but there was no way he was going to have that bow since he was stuck in the hospital with this strange girl.
Thinking about how she emerged from nowhere and caused him to think he had hit her, even annoyed him.
Not just that, she had even succeeded in ruining his plan of unwinding in the hotel. He won't be able to do that anymore because all that was in mind was to just undress, take a soothing shower, and sleep.
He wasn't even thinking about eating because that was the last thing on his kind after such an upside-down day.
