Chapter 3Once Master Edward was settled and dozing in his chamber after supper and the household’s evening prayers, Gregory was at liberty. Although his comings and goings had the blessing of his master and mistress, it still felt disconcerting not to ask permission or to account for his movements. He always felt slightly self-conscious when he slipped through the side gate before it was bolted for the night, half-anticipating hearing his name called and being scolded for his wanderings abroad.
