Chapter 4The evening turned chilly as daylight faded, reminding Gregory that it was not yet balmy summer despite several days of bright spring weather. Most of the patrons had removed indoors to the tavern or a nearby ordinary in search of hot food. Gregory and Jehan finished their tankards and stood by mutual accord. “Shall we head for home?” Jehan asked, his smile slightly bashful as though expecting Gregory to refuse and return to Bishopsgate. The word home still felt strange and thrilling, particularly as it would soon be a fact. Not long now, Gregory thought, in anticipation at the fresh direction his life was taking.
