CHAPTER ONE
Wilhelmina Dumat is seventeen years old and about to enter College. She thought of this as she sat on her bed. Yesterday, her parents had a really big argument about transferring to Verjant Residences. One of the biggest villages in Dautonoti. Her grandmother had just died, leaving the house to her mother, Vuko. But Vuko had always hated this place. Her mother always liked her sister more than Vuko. Wilhelmina's father, Nicholas, advised her to take the house because it was nearer to school and work. It took a few days before Nicholas was able to convince Vuko. Wilhelmina is neither glad not sad of it. She have been teased on highschool about her looks already. She had bushy, crumpled dark hair, dark skin, and complete with freckles. No matter what she does to her hair, it's naturally bushy. She never bothered with it. And her skin isn't black like what they tease. But her freckles doesn't have to be added at all. A lot of people want to have freckles after all. Wilhelmina have a brother, Nick. And if she gets bullied at school, she gets bullied in the house too. He's supposed to finish school already but he was expelled on his first year in college. Her mother and father spent most of their time in work. They almost lived in that hospital. That was why they have very little time for her and her brother. It might even be the reason why Nick had turned out differently. Wilhelmina sighed. She wished her auntie was still alive. She was the only one Wilhelmina was ever happy to be with. She understood her. She is her comforter, her mother, her teacher, and her friend. On her fifteenth birthday, she handed her a necklace. A beautiful necklace it was. Wisteria rubbed it against her fingers while looking at the window, raining. It is a simple silver line bended to a curve. It was Wilhelmina whom her auntie last spoke to. And she remembered well what her last words were. "You are the Protector." she had said. Two years passed and she hasn't moved on yet. "You! Get your damn a*s off your stupid room!" Nick shouted suddenly. Wilhelmina jumped but didn't answer. She had accidentally offended her brother an hour ago and she had to run for it. Taking her favorite green robe and a pair of boots, she went out of her window and run away. She might take refuge in the cemetery. And she splashed away from the house. Her brother realized it and rode on his bike, trying to catch her. But Wilhelmina is as fast as a car. Her brother has a close-shaven hair and a long body. His legs are strong because of always chasing Wilhelmina. Maybe he was a bully ever since he was born. Because Wilhelmina couldn't remember a time where he became a good brother. Wilhelmina stopped on an abandoned building and hid in the shadows. She saw her brother pass by. Wilhelmina immediately left the shadows. Or more like, tried to leave the shadows. But she a heard growling sound. And then a low panting, together with something hard against a stone. She knew something is about to pass her. Not her brother. But something enormous. She held her breath and tried to feel her way. Somebody suddenly pulled her to a narrow space just as a big burgundy wolf passed by. Wilhelmina was frozen. With the hand of a someone on her arm. Her breast heaved and fell and she made a run from the building. She run and run, ignoring the voice of her brother behind her. She reached the house and she fumbled on the door. But her brother took hold of her hair. "Not now fool." he hissed. Nick opened the door and pushed her to the bathroom. Them he locked her there. "Let me out!" Wilhelmina pounded the door. But she knew that he left the house. Wilhelmina kicked the door but all she was able to achieve was a pain on her big toe. Wilhelmina looked at the window. It's too small to her. "Augh!" she said, sitting on the toilet. She sat reading the magazines and imagining. After two hours, just as she started getting hungry, the door opened. "Out!" her brother barked. "Out! I'm gonna use the bathroom!" Wilhelmina pushed pass through him and run to the kitchen. She found a bread and took the whole loaf to her room. She forgot completely about the wolf or her savior. * * * The next day, she woke up early enough to meet her parents in breakfast. Nick is out again. "Morning." she said. They didn't hear her of course. "Mum, Dad!" Wilhelmina shouted. "Hullo too." Nickolas muttered. "It's my birthday on the tenth of January. You're gonna be able to make it right?" informed Wilhelmina, sitting on the table. Her parents never cooked. They only ordered foods. "Oh, sorry dear. We can't. We'll be busy the whole year I guess." Vuko said. "Here you go, buy yourself something. Anyway, school term starts on January. Funny, how they choose the summer days if you ask me. It's a boarding school anyway. Haven't you been complaining about your brother?" "A boarding school?" asked Wilhelmina. "Yes. Thistle's Boarding University." her father nodded, wearing his necktie. "Wasn't that the school who has a lot of reports of death?" asked Wilhelmina. "Dear, just try to keep out of trouble. Call us if you you need anything right?" her mother took out her wallet. "Birthday present, and buy your supplies. Here's the list." Wilhelmina sighed in disappointment. She ate a burger while walking to the nearest shop. Wilhelmina spotted her supplies easily. But she did her shopping quickly because for one reason, a group of girls were looking at her as though teasing her. For another reason, a boy was staring at her for too long with a creepy, impassive face. She opened her laptop to check about Thistle's Boarding University. Unfortunately, the page's last update was on 2000, which was nineteen years ago. Wilhelmina checked different pages. According to one page, the forest has always been open for students and has also been considered a park. This continued until the hapless death of a student on 1990 which was caused by a wolf. Deaths followed through the month from different causes. Mostly, in the dormitories but still some by wolves. The deaths astonishingly stopped in 2000. The last death was again caused by a wolf. After five years, students are again allowed to enter the forest, now with a teacher's permission.
