Chapter1
Emily Rich (POV)
I woke up to a throbbing headache, and immediately the alarm went off. f**k! It was just 6 a.m., and that’s definitely too early to be getting a headache.
It seems like bad luck’s lurking around, but I don’t give a s**t. I can’t miss this interview for the world, even if I have to go there in an ambulance.
.
I was finally able to drag myself out of bed after a good five minutes of trying to remember my name and what exactly I was doing here.
Looking at my disheveled blond hair and my pink pajamas in the mirror, I knew I f*****g needed this job more than I thought I did.
The interview was going to take place at Johnson’s Corporation, a multinational organization owned by the Johnson family.
They were the richest family in all of America, which means I have to go all the way to Westlake, the heart of Texas.
Crap! How can there be people out there who have so much money and have nothing to do with it while I’m here with my mom, barely having anything to eat? f**k society!
I quickly put on the only decent blue gown I had. I loved this gown so much because it complimented my blue eyes and long eyelashes.
Morning mom, I said as I walked into the sitting room.
Morning baby, ready to crush that interview?
I don’t know, mom; I think I’ll be the one crushed today. Damn, you sound like I’m going to apply for a job as a secretary or something. It’s just a cleaning job. Do you think I could ever get a good position at such a company? not even in my dreams, mom.
Emi, I get that you’re bigger than this job, but we need it right now, baby.
Yes mom. I can’t believe you worked your ass off for me to go to college, and now all I’m going to end up with is a cleaning job.
Hey Emi, where’s all this coming from right now? You’ve been preparing for this job since forever, and now that it’s here, you’ll just do what? Back out? Are you a 25- year-old chicken or something?
Chill out, mom. I understand more than anyone the importance of getting this job. But you know there will be other people there. I’m just saying that i don’t want to get my hopes up.
Well, what’s the worst that could happen, girl? My mom asked. A no, yeah? Baby, no is not the end of the world, but I do hope it’s a yes this time, or we might just end up on the streets.
But I won’t let that happen; I’m here for you, darling. Go ace this interview! I don’t even know why you have to be interviewed to be allowed to clean. Who understands rich people anyway?
With that said, I had a quick breakfast, packed my hair into a messy bun, and stepped out of the house so I could catch the train.
Well, the heavens must be against me getting this job because the moment I stepped out of the train to catch my final bus, it started to rain. No scratch that; it didn’t just rain; the skies literally threw up all the water they’d been holding up.
Fuck! how am I supposed to show up for an interview wet to the teeth? I am definitely getting pneumonia after this!
After what seemed like decades, I was finally able to catch a bus and arrive at my destination.
Standing outside this massive structure, I began to once again reconsider what I was about to do. I was nervous as hell. What was I supposed to say?
First, I’m wet; I’m literally dripping from head to toe. Second, I am already an hour late due to the rain and the fact that it delayed the bus. Next, I couldn’t even remember what I had planned to say, and to make things worse, I was out of my territory right now. I didn’t belong here;I do not belong to the class of people I’m going to see once I step into this building.
But f**k it all, since I’m here, I might as well just go in.
There were at least fifty people at the reception the moment I walked in. I felt so small compared to this magnificent building. I didn’t dare look around; that would just make me seem creepy and give off my status_ poor!
Um, good morning, I said as soon as I sighted the receptionist. My name is Emily Rich. I stammered.
The receptionist continued typing as though I were non existent. I suddenly felt the urge to cry. I really shouldn’t have come here! I was about to walk away when I heard a woman’s voice call out to me.
Hey, who are you, and why would you walk into this building this wet? You’re dripping water everywhere; what is wrong with you?
I’m so sorry, so sorry. Uhm, I’m Emily. I came for the interview, but then it rained and all, and I’m sorry.
“Interview”? The lady said, eyeing me with suspicion. What interview?
I was taken aback for a moment. Did I make a mistake? Was this not the company? Well, I’m sure as hell that I was invited for an interview today. The cleaning position, ma’am, I said.
You’re here for an eight o’clock interview by 9? I’m Sage, the CEO’s secretary; you were supposed to meet with me.
I am so sorry, ma’am. I…
Sorry is all you’ve said since you walked in. Please leave, Miss Emily I have already interviewed everyone else for today. Perhaps you should try somewhere else! This place clearly doesn’t suit you.
I couldn’t just go back; no, I needed money so badly, I needed this job. So I did the most unlikely thing. I knelt down and begged. Of course I was ashamed, but trust me the bills I had to sort out knew no shame.
Please, I really need to be interviewed. Please,
I already asked you to leave, Miss.Dont make me call security; you do not belong here!
“I’ll be the one to decide that”. A deep masculine voice interrupted, and we both turned back to see whose voice it was.
I was shocked out of my sockets while the secretary looked like she had seen a ghost. I couldn’t believe my eyes; I was standing in front of the most talked- about bachelor in all of America, Robert Johnson! The billionaire CEO. Gosh, curse my luck today; I’m so f****d!
