He had found me.
Emily The fluorescent lights in my small therapy office hummed softly as I finished typing up my notes for the day. The clock on the wall showed 7:45 PM. Sarah, my last patient, had just left after another emotional session unpacking the bruises her husband left on her arms and spirit. I sat at my desk for a moment, rubbing my temples, letting the quiet of the empty building settle around me. My office was my sanctuary — soft beige walls, two comfortable armchairs facing each other, a small potted plant in the corner, and shelves lined with books on trauma and healing. It was the one place where I felt in control, where I could help others put their broken pieces back together, even if my own past still haunted me in the quiet hours. I locked my notes in the drawer, grabbed my leather satchel, and turned off the lights. The hallway was empty as I walked toward the exit, my heels clicking on the tiled floor. The building felt eerily quiet tonight. I stepped out into the chilly Chicago evening, the air heavy with the promise of rain. The streetlights cast long shadows on the sidewalk as I started the six-block walk to my apartment. My phone vibrated in my coat pocket. I ignored it at first. But it buzzed again. And again.I pulled it out under the glow of a streetlamp. Unknown number. Unknown: Dr. Emily Parker. We need to talk. Tonight. Another message followed with a location pin in the redeveloped warehouse district near the river. Unknown: Thirty minutes. Don’t make this difficult. I know where you live — Apartment 4B. Fear twisted sharply in my stomach, a cold knot that made it hard to breathe. My mind raced with worst-case scenarios — old syndicate connections, someone looking for revenge, but I couldn’t ignore this. I quickly hailed a cab, waving frantically at the first yellow car that appeared. The driver pulled over, and I slid into the back seat, giving him the address with a shaky voice. The cab smelled of old leather and air freshener as we drove through the wet streets, my heart pounding the entire way. The cab dropped me off in front of a sleek converted warehouse. I took the private elevator up. When the doors opened, I stepped into a luxurious loft with exposed brick walls, polished hardwood floors, and large windows overlooking the river. A man stood near the windows with his back to me — tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in a black button-down shirt with sleeves rolled up. I cleared my throat. “Excuse me?” He turned slowly. Ronan Vale. The recognition hit me like a slow wave. I had seen him once, years ago — a tall, intimidating figure at a gathering my brother Marcus had taken me to. He had been in his early twenties then, already carrying an aura of power and danger. Now, his steel-gray eyes locked onto me, and a slow, taunting smile spread across his face. “Look at you,” he drawled, his voice low and mocking. “Running through the rain like a frightened little rabbit. Did you really think you could hide forever, Elena Voss?” My heart slammed against my ribs. “My name is Emily Parker,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “Who are you, and what do you want?” He chuckled softly and set his whiskey glass down on the table. “You don’t remember me? That’s almost disappointing. But I remember you. Quiet little sister of Marcus Voss. Always watching from the corners.” He walked toward me with deliberate steps. “I need you to do something for me, Dr. Parker. One of my men .Victor Reyes, saw too much during a deal that went bad. He’s unraveling. Talking about confessing. Getting out. Victor is one of my most trusted men. I can’t lose him, and I can’t kill him. That’s why I need you.” I stayed near the elevator, my hands gripping my satchel. “I’m a therapist, not someone who works for people like you. Find someone else.” He stopped a few feet away, his presence overwhelming. “You’re the best at what you do. You understand trauma from the inside. You grew up in this world, didn’t you? So here’s my offer. You treat Victor. Twice a week at first, more if needed. You live in a secure apartment I provide for the duration. You can still work at your clinic three mornings a week, but with my security. You will be available whenever I say. Do this well, and I can make it very worth your while. A few million dollars in a clean account. Enough to disappear for good if you want after this is over. In return, I won’t destroy the nice little life you built under your new name.” I laughed bitterly. “This is blackmail.” “Call it what you want,” he said with a shrug, his tone casual but his eyes sharp. “Refuse, and tomorrow your clinic loses funding. Your friend Maya gets a visit from people she doesn’t want to meet. And the people still looking for Elena Voss will finally find her. So… what’s it going to be, Dr. Parker?” The rain started pattering against the windows as I stood there, trapped by his words. He watched me with dark amusement, waiting for my answer. “I need time to think,” I whispered. “You have until tomorrow evening,” he said. “My men will come for you then to move you into the apartment. Try to run again, Elena… and you will regret it.” I turned and left without another word. As the elevator descended, I leaned against the wall, trying to hold myself together. He had found me. And my past had finally caught up.
