“What condition?” He asked.
Lily pressed her lips together nervously before saying “I want you to invest in an orphanage instead of paying me.” She continued. “I know I turned you down rudely yesterday, but this orphanage is really important to me.”
“Is that really all? Invest in an orphanage?” Mr. Dominic asked, shocked. Many people wouldn’t hesitate to jump on the deal and make ridiculous demands, but here Lily was making such a trivial demand.
A chuckle escaped Mr. Dominic’s lips. “You’re an odd one.” He said. “Fine, I’ll invest in this orphanage of yours.”
“Really?” Lily's eyes widened.
“I don’t go back on my word.” He replied. Lily's eyes welled up. She was finally able to make herself helpful to those who had helped her. To him, it was a trivial matter but to Lily, it was her entire life.
“Thank you very much! I’ll work harder from now on.” Lily said with a big smile plastered on her face.
John entered the office. He seemed shocked as he noticed Lily’s presence.
“Good morning.” He greeted as he entered, stepping forward.
“Good morning .” Lily replied with a smile.
“Miss Lily here has decided to take up our offer.” Mr. Dominic said to John who seemed quite shocked about the news.
“That’s good.” John said, fixing his glasses.
They head out of the office together.
“Oh, I forgot.” Lily gasped. She handed a cup of coffee to John. “I wasn’t sure what you would like, so I bought you the same thing as Mr. Dominic.” John's eyebrow twitched.
“The same as Mr. Dominic?” He asked.
“Yes.” Lily replied confused.
“Thank you.” John said, taking a sip of the coffee. He immediately spat it out as he felt the taste on his tongue.
“Are you okay? Is there something wrong with the coffee?” Lily asked worriedly.
“The truth is I actually have a sweet tooth.” John confessed. Lily looked at John shocked.
“Is that so?” She said in relief that it wasn’t something serious but John having a sweet tooth was actually a surprise. John's face flushed slightly as he was a little embarrassed.
“Thank you for the coffee.” He said.
“You’re welcome. I’ll get you a sweet one next time.” Lily said with a smile.
“I’d appreciate that but still, thank you for this.” He said, referring to the bitter coffee.
“I’m glad you took up our offer.” John said changing the topic.
“I’m just taking advantage of what was given to me.” She said. John smiled at her words.
Work went on as normal. This time John stayed in the office and gave her some documents to work with. Lily took care of all the tasks she was given perfectly.
“As expected, you’re good.” John said, praising her as he scanned through the documents she had worked on.
It was time to head home and John had already left earlier. Lily picked up her bag, ready to go when Mr. Dominic came out of the office. This was the first time he came out all day.
Lily's eyes fell on his tall figure. “Do you need something sir?” Lily asked.
“I need you to be ready for an outing on Saturday. I will be picking you up at 11am prompt.” He said.
“Outing?” She asked, confused.
“You surely haven’t forgotten our deal have you.” He said, raising an eyebrow. Lily's eyes widened in realization.
“Of course not.” She said nervously.
“We’ll be meeting someone.” He said.
“Who?-“ Her phone buzzed, cutting her off as it caught her attention. She looked at Mr Dominic.
“You can take it.” He said.
Aunt Rachel’s name appeared on the screen as she picked up her phone. She swiped to accept the call, placing it on ear.
“Lily, Thank you.” Aunt Rachel said with a shaky voice.
“Aunty, what’s going on?” Lily asked, confused.
“You donated so much to the orphanage.” She cried.
Lily’s eyes fell on Mr. Dominic who was standing in front of her.
“It’s nothing Aunty, make sure to take care of yourself and everyone else. I have to go now.” Lily said.
“Okay Lily darling, visit soon.” She said before hanging up.
Lily stared at Mr. Dominic, her eyes teary. “You already invested in the orphanage? How did you even know which orphanage?”
“Running a background check is easy and everything after that was an easy puzzle to fix.” He said with a straight face. “The orphanage will get monthly donations under your name.” He added.
“I can’t tell you how grateful I am.” Lily said with a smile, her eyes still watery.
“As long as you do a good job and I get what I want as soon as possible then we’re even.” He said unbothered.
“I’ll do my best!” Lily exclaimed in joy.
“That’s what I expect.” He turned around to go back into his office.
“Good night sir.” Lily bidded.
“Don’t keep me waiting on Saturday.” He replied before disappearing into his office.
Lily got home hungry, she hadn’t eaten all day but she was too excited to be bothered.
“Someone’s excited.” Ezra smiled. “What’s the good news?” She asked. She was sitting on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and her laptop in front of her watching a movie. She probably got back early from work, Lily thought.
“I’m just in a really good mood. Turns out my boss isn’t such an asshole.” Lily said, falling into Ezra’s arm. She put the popcorn aside.
“Well that’s good to hear.” She said brushing through Lily's hair with her hand.
Lily's stomach growled. Her cheek flushed as she covered her face with her palm in embarrassment.
“You little bunny, what will I do with you?” Ezra laughed.
“I made Mac and cheese because I knew there was a high chance you wouldn’t get anything to eat at work.” Ezra said.
“Thank you mama.” Lily said, trying to pout like a baby.
…
The week had gone by in a flash and it was finally Saturday. It was already 8am, and Lily was still unsure of what to wear. Ezra had gone out earlier leaving Lily in a bind. After hours of indecisiveness, she went with a white shirt and plain pants, and her hair tied in a messy bun.
Lily was done dressing when she got a call, it was from an unknown number. She picked the call.
“Come outside. I’m waiting.” A voice said from the phone. Immediately, Lily recognized the voice.
“Mr. Dominic, I’ll be right there.” She said.
Lily took one last look at the mirror before heading out.
A black Porsche was right outside her apartment. The window was rolled down so she could see Mr Dominic’s head hanging. She walked towards the car and entered.
“Good day sir, I hope you didn’t wait long.” She greeted him.
“Hmm.” He answered silently with his face hardened. His eyes trailed off to Lily’s body, scanning what she was wearing.
“There are a few things I need you to know.” He said in a serious tone. “First, call me Viktor.”
Lily's eyes widened at his statement.
“How could I do that sir?” Lily blurted out.
“You’re supposed to be my fiancée, don’t you think it would be a little weird calling me Mr Dominic?” He said with a frown.
“I’m sorry V-Viktor…” Lily shuttered as she said the name.
“Try it again.” Viktor said.
“Viktor.” She said more firmly this time.
“Good.” Viktor replied.
“Let’s go get you something else to wear.” Viktor said.
“What’s wrong with what I’m wearing?” Lily asked, looking at herself.
“You think I’ll give you a chance to ruin my opportunity with Grandma Betty looking like that?” He blurted out.
“Grandma Betty?” Lily said.
