Chapter I - Introduction: What´s a RPG?
This chapter is just to "fill the sausage" (like we say in Brazil), after all, every RPG (Role Playing Game) book starts with a chapter like this ;-)! Let's get straight to the point... Those who have come this far to read this book/game already know what RPG is :-P.
But just to note, the best definition of RPG I've seen so far was from a friend of mine, based on the high degree of interpretation and creativity we need to have when playing this game. So, RPG is nothing more than:
"Poor man's video game."
Of course, if you're one of those who buys books for an average of USD 200 and more, then you won't like this definition much. But if you're like our group, making up everything (or downloading from the internet, or getting magazines and borrowed copies of books from friends and never returning them, hehehe), then you've come to the right place ;-).
We're here to allow you to play RPG while spending as little as possible, although you need to have at least something at home (a little joke moment "Praça é Nossa" [a Brazilian comedy show])! In this system, you'll need to use your creativity, pencil, eraser, a blank sheet of paper (preferably draft to protect the environment!!!), and dice D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, and D20 (as shown in the image above). If you don't have the dice, download an app/program from the net/playstore that simulates dice rolls at least, because you're asking for too much, even the first-level adventurer starts with basic "gear," right!?!!
If you have difficulty finding such a program, leave a comment, and we'll send you the link. Soon I'll put links here to buy the dice too... In case someone comments on this nonsense, hehe.
If you have no idea what RPG is, I'll ask you to remember that movie, TV series, or book you like the most. Got it? Now that you've done this exercise, imagine yourself in the place of the hero or protagonist! Ready! That's RPG! Enough of being just a reader! I also want to participate in this adventure...
For an RPG session, it's necessary for one of the players to take on the role of the game master (the nerdiest guy in the group who will have to read the entire rule book, hehe). The master is like a god! He decides everything that happens (based on the players' dice rolls) and narrates the story. The other players are the protagonists of the adventure. Here, we'll use the medieval fantasy setting, but feel free to use any setting, from superheroes, post-apocalyptic, space opera, horror, etc. There are some crazy people in w*****d who even play in the Hentai-school setting... There are weirdos for everything, hehe.
Ideally, play at a table (old school style) with soda, snacks, and a group of 4 to 5 people (can vary a bit). But with the advent of technology, you can play online with apps like "Discord," for example. There are even many academic works on using RPG in the classroom. Many teachers use this technique/game (including me), and it brings many positive results when used well.
I tried to create a game with simple and reduced rules to introduce children and pre-teens to this art. You, as a parent, uncle, etc., will have a good chance to pass on this hobby. I'm counting on you!
Well! Let's go! Get ready for battle...
