Chapter1—Six Hours Late
Selena Hart checks her phone again.
11:47 PM.
Six hours.
Adrian was six hours late to their wedding.
The cathedral that had once buzzed with excitement now felt suffocatingly quiet. Guests whispered behind expensive champagne glasses while cameras flashed near the entrance doors. Somewhere outside, reporters were still gathered beneath the grand staircase waiting for the billionaire wedding of the year to finally begin.
Or collapse.
Her maid of honor, Vanessa, grabbed her arm gently. “Selena… maybe you should sit down.”
“I’m fine.”
But she wasn’t.
Her legs were trembling beneath layers of white silk, and her bouquet felt heavier every passing minute.
At the altar, Father Benedict cleared his throat awkwardly for what had to be the tenth time tonight.
“Miss Hart,” he began carefully, “perhaps we should postpone the ceremony until Mr. Vale arrives.”
“He’s coming,” Selena answered immediately.
Too quickly.
Too desperately.
Vanessa’s face tightened with concern.
“Selena…”
“He promised me.”
And Adrian Vale never broke promises.
That was the problem.
If this had been anyone else, Selena would’ve walked out hours ago. But Adrian wasn’t careless. He wasn’t cruel either. Cold sometimes? Yes. Emotionally distant? Definitely. But not this.
Never this.
Her phone remained painfully silent in her hands.
No calls.
No texts.
Nothing.
The heavy cathedral doors creaked open suddenly, making her heart leap violently inside her chest.
But it wasn’t Adrian.
Only another group of late guests entering while whispering among themselves.
One woman glanced toward Selena with obvious pity.
“Oh my God,” she murmured quietly to her husband. “He really isn’t coming.”
Selena looked away before the humiliation on her face became too obvious.
Vanessa quickly stepped closer. “Ignore them.”
“I am ignoring them.”
Another lie.
Because she heard everything.
Every whisper.
Every cruel little comment.
The Hart family sat stiffly in the front pews pretending not to notice the growing embarrassment. Selena’s mother hadn’t looked at her in nearly twenty minutes. Her father appeared furious enough to explode.
The Vale family section was even worse.
Victor Vale sat with his usual emotionless expression, his silver cane resting between gloved hands. Beside him, Adrian’s mother looked uncomfortable but unsurprised.
Unsurprised.
That word twisted painfully inside Selena’s chest.
She swallowed hard before dialing Adrian again.
Straight to voicemail.
Her stomach dropped.
“Maybe there’s traffic,” she whispered.
Vanessa stared at her like she’d lost her mind. “Traffic doesn’t last six hours, Selena.”
The words hit harder than they should have.
Selena forced herself to inhale slowly.
Something was wrong.
Something had to be wrong.
Adrian loved control too much to disappear like this. Even when they fought, he always answered her calls eventually. Always.
So where the hell was he?
A sudden vibration buzzed through the cathedral.
Then another.
And another.
Guests around the room began checking their phones almost simultaneously.
Whispers spread faster this time.
Sharp.
Excited.
Intrested.
Selena frowned.
“What’s happening?”
Vanessa quickly pulled out her own phone. The moment she unlocked it, all color drained from her face.
“No,” she whispered.
Selena’s heartbeat stumbled.
“What?”
Vanessa immediately locked the screen. “Nothing.”
“Vanessa.”
“It’s probably fake.”
Cold dread crawled slowly down Selena’s spine.
Across the cathedral, someone suddenly laughed under their breath.
“Oh, this is bad.”
Another guest leaned closer to their phone. “I knew it. I told you he was never over Cassandra.”
The name hit Selena like ice water.
Cassandra Devereux.
Adrian’s first love.
The woman tabloids had spent years linking him to even after their breakup.
The woman Adrian promised meant nothing anymore.
Selena took a step forward. “What are they talking about?”
Vanessa looked trapped.
Before she could answer, Selena heard another whisper nearby.
“He left with her?”
“No way.”
“There are pictures.”
Pictures.
Her pulse began hammering violently now.
“Vanessa,” Selena said again, this time almost pleading. “Show me.”
Vanessa hesitated too long.
That was answer enough.
Selena snatched the phone from her hands.
Her breath stopped instantly.
A news article filled the screen.
BREAKING NEWS: Billionaire Heir Adrian Vale Spotted Boarding Private Jet With Former Lover Cassandra Devereux
Below the headline were photographs.
Clear photographs.
Adrian stepping onto a private jet.
Cassandra beside him.
His arm wrapped tightly around her waist.
The phone nearly slipped from Selena’s fingers.
“No,” she whispered.
The cathedral around her blurred.
Guests were openly staring now. Some pretending not to while secretly recording videos. Others whispering behind poorly hidden smirks.
“Oh my God, I feel so bad for her.”
“This is humiliating.”
“Imagine being abandoned at your own wedding.”
Selena couldn’t breathe properly anymore.
Her chest felt tight.
Painfully tight.
This wasn’t possible.
Adrian wouldn’t do this.
He couldn’t.
Her eyes locked back onto the photographs desperately searching for some explanation.
Some misunderstanding.
But then she noticed something worse.
Adrian didn’t look forced.
He looked protective.
Intimate.
Like a man leaving with the woman he loved.
Vanessa grabbed her shoulders carefully. “Selena, maybe we should go somewhere private.”
“I…”
Her voice broke.
The entire cathedral had gone silent now.
Even Father Benedict looked horrified.
Somewhere near the back, cameras flashed.
Someone had leaked the story to the press already.
Selena suddenly realized every second of this humiliation was becoming public entertainment.
Tomorrow morning her face would be everywhere.
Abandoned Bride. Pathetic Billionaire Fiancée. Woman Left at the Altar.
The thought made nausea rise violently in her throat.
Still, even now, part of her wanted to defend him.
Adrian promised.
Adrian never broke promises.
So why did it suddenly feel like her entire world was collapsing beneath her feet?
Her phone rang.
The sound shattered the silence instantly.
Everyone stared.
Selena’s hands shook as she looked down at the screen.
Adrian.
For one insane second, relief flooded through her so hard it hurt.
“He’s calling,” she whispered.
Vanessa looked uncertain. “Selena…”
But Selena had already answered.
“Adrian?”
Heavy breathing met her ears first.
Then his voice.
Rough. Panicked. Unsteady.
“Selena listen to me”
A female voice interrupted in the background.
“Adrian, we have to go now.”
Cassandra.
Selena froze completely.
“Selena,” Adrian said urgently, “something happened.”
The cathedral disappeared around her.
All she could hear was that woman’s voice beside him.
Close enough to touch him.
Close enough to travel with him.
Close enough to ruin her.
Tears burned Selena’s eyes.
“You’re with her,” she whispered.
“Please just listen to me.”
But Selena couldn’t.
Because at that exact moment another guest gasped loudly while staring at their phone.
“Oh my God,” the woman blurted. “There’s another photo.”
Everyone reached for their phones again.
And Selena looked down just in time to see the newest image uploaded across every news outlet in the country.
Adrian Vale holding Cassandra Devereux against his chest as they boarded the jet together.
